If I am managing 500+ RHEL VM’s in onpremise can I use azure local to manage that? Can I automate the monitoring , patching , configuration , deployment etc. Also is it possible to integrate local onpremise netwroks into azure local?
Azure Local can we run Databricks feature ?
I lol'ed at the words 'licensing' and 'trauma' being used in the same sentence.
Will Azure local eventually replace Hyper V on the Server and local AD? and how should we prepare for this change?
No, not at all! Azure Local is a consolidation and name change for what was once called Azure Stack HCI. It is a not an OS, but a compete solution. That solution is built on-top of technologies like Hyper-V and Windows Server OS. As a matter of fact, Windows Server 2025 shares the same build number as the soon-to-be-released OS update for Azure Local. And Windows 11 24H2! Just to say it one more time for everyone in the back - Hyper-V is not going anywhere! It is the foundation that almost every Windows OS uses - from client (Win 10/11), Server, XBox, and Azure's own hypervisor. Local AD - not sure I follow this question. If you're asking if traditional ADDS is gonna die and be replaced with Azure AD (Entra ID), the answer is also a loud "no". Azure Local was built requiring ADDS since the beginning, but they are introducing AD-less deployments for folks who do not want to manage a "fabric domain". But no, Azure AD is not in that equation as a replacement.
Will there be a Azure Local OEM license including Windows Server 2025 VMs available?
Will there be a Azure Local OEM license with Windows Server 2025 VMs?
Nice demo
Excellent, thank you. I especially enjoyed Howard Lo's last slide "Pubic Preview". 😁 There are still challenges with Azure Migrate, i.e., Source VMs with static IP addresses are not migrated. Once synchronised any changes are only transferred every hour, but this is not configurable VMTools must be manually uninstalled after migration. MAC addresses are not migrated. Migrated VMs are not automatically Arc enabled. Migrating clustered VMs is not supported.
Why does this 2024 video look like a 2004 video
Good stuff
What are those empty words without any comarison or proof? I was on the Moon yestarday. Ok?
Its not 5th gen Xeon. Its 5th gen Xeon scalable. We hit gen five xeon almost 10 years ago.
no thanks!
Good luck competing with chiplets in servers, you already fubar
Soundbytes of what Intel wants messaged, but no analysis.
Amd is still better cost to perfmance... So... Eff off.
Why did the computer go to therapy after Intel released its 5th generation of Xeon processors? Because it had too many cores and couldn't process its feelings!
Wow! I really would like to see an in depth usability video! Nice stuff!
hello, Great video but I have a question, how you are assigned nodes to sites, this step is not clear?
In the demo video the nodes automatically were assigned to their sites because sites/subnets were configured in “Active Directory Sites and Services” (For example, subnet 10.3.7.0/24 = “site X” and Subnet 10.4.7.0/24 = “site Y”). Otherwise, you would do it manually in the WAC wizard. For PowerShell deployments it would be done like the following: #create sites: New-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" -FaultDomainType Site -Name "Site1" New-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" -FaultDomainType Site -Name "Site2" #verify both sites created for the cluster: Get-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" #assign servers to their sites: Set-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" -Name "Server1", "Server2" -Parent "Site1" Set-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" -Name "Server3", "Server4" -Parent "Site2" #verify nodes are in their desired sites: Get-ClusterFaultDomain -CimSession "ClusterS1" learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/deploy/create-cluster-powershell
In order to make to more easy, you can remove the DIMM, and also ground himself before replacement of the CPU.
Very nice explanation. Thanks
How about from Nutanix AHV to Azure stack HCI. Can you recommend a methodology for that
Currently the answer is 'no'. Nutanix AHV backups can only be restored to a select few other hypervisors or cloud locations (documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/87279_cross_hypervisor_restores_vm_conversion.html). Please feel free to submit a request for Nutanix to Azure Stack HCI support here: metallic.io/contact
Might be a good video, don't know, the audio is way too quiet to listen to and understand... Maybe adjust the audio and re-upload?
audio issues with this video... 😬
Please try watching again. I just checked the video and didn't experience any issues with the audio.
Great video :) Cheers, Flo
Is there any info to read about S2D disk space usage. I tried to understand the usage after i enabled s2d and created empty volume. And I saw that I understand nothing in this area, at least via wac :(
In Windows Admin Center, you should be able to see the disk space usage under Tools -> Drives and then by clicking the Inventory tab. See: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/get-started#drives
Very excited ...
Amazing stuff!! Increase your engagement easily --> 'PromoSM'.
Yikes, so I wouldn’t be able to use this in a server with 12 hdd’s and 4 SSD’s? :(
Correct, Storage Bus Layer (SBL) cache is not supported in single server HCI configurations. The only supported storage types are flat-NVMe or SSD (i.e., single drive type).
I want to configure single-node cluster on azure stack hci. I have used 2 HDD+2SSD. and my bare metal server enabled HBA mode to pass through RAID. I have installed on 2 HDD. and 2SSD in raw position. I can create cluster but can not exucute the command line "Enable-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect -CacheState Disabled" and also showing can pool is false. what's the solution?
Hi Suvradeb. The four drives will need to be identical SSDs for a non-cached solution. One recent announcement from Microsoft is lowering the minimum number of capacity drives needed. In your case, you can create an HCI cluster with just 2 SSD (no HDDs) drives as capacity drives. See learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-hardware-requirements#physical-deployments
I was not able to find what hardware would be required to run a home lab with a single node. Do you have a link to it or any idea? Trying to build this at home. Thanks!
Microsoft recommends using a server from the Azure Stack HCI catalog (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/guided-quick-deploy-eval). In your case it might be easier to create a VM-based lab (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/deploy/tutorial-private-forest) or by using Azure VMs (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/guided-quick-deploy-eval).
great explanation
is there a full on-premise version without centralized azure online subscription for privacy and resiliency?
Azure Stack HCI is Hyper-V under the covers. If you want the traditional model of licensing the host and licensing the guests with a license instead of monthly subscription, you can install the Hyper-V role on Windows Server. It's functionally the same. Azure Stack HCI may get some updates faster than Hyper-V on Windows, but it's the same hypervisor, runs the same VHD's, etc.
Yes. Dell has an integrated solution for disconnected Windows server HCI too.
Yep: Azure Stack Hub
Thanks
great video. :D
Glad you enjoyed it
Can this cluster be achieved using only 2 servers ?
I believe you need 2 servers minimum per cluster and 2 sites to achieve a stretched cluster, so 4 servers total
I think Microsoft completely missed the mark on pricing. Can you imagine building an HCI cluster with 3 servers, dual socket AMD Ryzen's with 64 cores per socket. That's $3840/month just for the privilege to tie your Cluster to Azure. Then you can't license it with Windows Server Datacenter...yikes
Thanks for the great content!
