    Try using water and worchestershire sauce in a spray bottle as a binder. After you put your rub on, give the entire brisket a generous coating of beef bullion powder. While cooking, use a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar, apple juice and water mixed evenly. I wrap when the fat starts to pull back and I pull the brisket at 198°. When wrapping, you can pour some beef tallow on the brisket if you want. Wagyu tallow tubs are cheap. I cook BBQ competitively and won 9th in the Carolinas last year, for what it's worth.

      @FrankGutowski-ls8jt I’m no chemist but I believe the cleaning power in super washing soda comes from other agents. Arm & Hammer washing soda contains surfactants, which are agents that help with wetting. Arm & Hammer washing soda is about 80% sodium carbonate, with the remaining percentage made up of surfactants and fragrances. It enhances cleaning agents. IDK, cleans my clothes pretty well and the oxyclean helps it jell. Probably less than $2 per 175 oz bottle. I don’t feel silly at all.

    Hawks are fascinating creatures, and falconry is an amazing sport. There are so many possibilities for why that juvenile bird expired, it could be the flu, but also if anyone put out bar bait for rodents, it would have a similar reaction. Your local DNR should have information on who you should contact if you are serious about pursuing housing a bird of prey. There are a long list of federal guidelines and requirements and the commitment level is very serious. Even if you choose to go the route of being a rehabber, there is mandatory training and licensing. The fine for even having a feather in your possession is quite high, so make yourself familiar with your local, state, and federal regs. It is so rewarding for those who really get into it, so enjoy!

    Aww that’s so sad! :( You tried so hard for this hawk! I am certain he didn't just starve to death because he did eat the other day. I'm blaming either West Nile Virus or Bird Flu. If he was walking in a “drunk” sort of way, then it was bird flu! He may have crashed into something and the impact could have caused internal bleeding. Admittedly, I would have done the same thing you did to help him but I'd keep him inside. You just never know what nocturnal predators there are late at night, especially when a hawk is stranded on the ground and can't fly. RIP beautiful juvenile Red Tailed Hawk!

    • @homesteadhobbyfarm
      @homesteadhobbyfarm 4 місяці тому

      We had suspected both things you just said. The night he went over by the cow barn he was protected by the electric fence. Smart bird. But the next night he just wandered off and we couldn’t find him. I do feel like he was sent to us. Now I am going to look into falconer. Thanks for your comments and help.

    • @jthejh
      @jthejh 3 місяці тому

      Same here, I'm looking to become a Falconer myself as well. What you need to do is find yourself a sponsor who has been a Falconer for at least 2 years. Then he/she will let you know what equipment or housing you'll need. Its not difficult to build a perch in a shed. The shed just needs barred windows and a door that locks closed. You can use astroturf to catch the hawk's droppings, which can be cleaned with a power washer. You need a freezer that can hold maybe 20 squirrels depending on how many you plan on catching with the hawk. Well, there's half of your Falconer checklist right here. So hopefully that helps.

    This is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk that’s fledged from the nest 3 months ago and has left the nesting area. He may have traveled hundreds of miles and took breaks to hunt but was unable to catch anything. It is also possible that he may have injured his wing. Time and meals will heal him. Raw chicken parts are always the #1 meal to give to a hawk in my opinion. It can be wings, the breast, back or legs. But whatever it is, make sure that hawk can eat the first bite without any extra effort. Raw steak cut into thin snake-like strips is my 2nd choice. Good luck!

    • @homesteadhobbyfarm
      @homesteadhobbyfarm 4 місяці тому

      Awesome!! thanks for the information. Do they just need to eat once a day? We haven’t seen him/her (not sure which) fly since Monday. I sure hope it sticks around to get healed. Is there any way to determine the sex of the bird? I just call it him.

    • @jthejh
      @jthejh 4 місяці тому

      The amount doesn't matter. A hawk should eat enough food that the crop in the throat budges. A hawk will stop eating on its own once the crop is too full. It is impossible to give a hawk too much food. A hawk could eat as much as 10 times a day if it hasn't eaten in a few days. But they NEED at least 20% in their body weight of food per day if you expect him to survive. Any less, then starvation is on the horizon. A Red Tailed Hawk weighs about 3 lbs, so it needs about 0.7 lbs of raw meat. The gender of this hawk can only be determined by size. Females are 1/3rd larger. So a healthy female would weigh about 3.5 lbs.

  • @jthejh
    @jthejh 4 місяці тому

    I like this hawk! I think he should stay as long as he possibly can. And yeah, raw chicken works best, but it can just be small pieces. This will conceptualize that a smaller meal is easier to catch. This way he no longer has to pick on prey that’s his own size. You did great feeding him, and I’m glad that he’s really getting tolerant of you!
