My experience racing Tour Divide 2022
I was asked to put together a presentation for my colleagues at Specialized Bicycles about my experience racing and finishing Tour Divide. It was an incredible experience and checked off one of my life goals. Hopefully this inspires a few people to go achieve their goals!

One of the best videos out there. Thank you. Learned a lot.
Will ride the TD 2025 edition. Preparation started!
Hi Nick. I saw you made a design of a bed platform for you minivan. I love it and would like to replicate. Do you have an update? would you be able to make a video about it? Thanks
Hi Tam, that was a while ago and unfortunately I lost the CAD files and got rid of that van years ago. I’m driving another Sienna now, so if I build another platform for it I’ll definitely make a video.
Well done!
Your audiences will increase over time. Thanks for a great video.
Here's a link to my bike build and gear list. I've used this setup on a couple more trips since TD and it's still working great. nickridesbikes.wordpress.com/2022/06/06/tour-divide-2022-bike-and-gear/
Can you post the link to your full build and gear list? Also, where did you store your food over night? Thanks, I enjoyed your video.
Hey Tony, I just added a link to the build and great list to the description. I stored my food in a string backpack, which I generally stashed a couple hundred feet from camp, tying it up in a tree when possible. Luckily, nothing ever got taken by any hungry critters.
Cool video, just subbed.
Can you please write down the name of that cream?
The chamois cream? Lantiseptic. Good stuff.
@@nickridesbikes Thanks!
Really enjoyed your talk, thanks heaps.
Hah, funny that this was suddenly in my recommended videos. Great hanging out with you in Banff and I also had fun messing with the dotwatchers while carrying your tracker to the finish (I had people wave me down on route to Hachita to ask what was going on :D). Cheers!
It was great hanging out with you in Banff and meeting again briefly in Eureka. Thanks for finding my tracker and giving me an "official" finish time!
Hi Nick. Nice talk. I rode with you a bit on Day 1 - you forgot to mention the young grizzly we saw (and perhaps others)! I got bad food poisoning on Day 3 but after a zero day rallied and eventually finished in 26 days. The longest ride I'd done before this was a 4 day tour around Tahoe. Felt like just finishing, especially this year, was victory.
Great presentation, very informative. Do you have a link to the gear list?
Thanks, Peter. Here’s a link to the gear list: nickridesbikes.wordpress.com/2022/06/06/tour-divide-2022-bike-and-gear/
Accidentally stumbled upon on this post and I liked it: «Good morning everyone.. there are six people in this room...» But the narration was addictive. Amazing trip! Happy for you, Nick.
Speaking of spokes, I broke 4 while climbing Lynx Pass, and rode it that way until Silverthorne.
Impressive! All four on one wheel? Were you able to salvage the wheel?
@Nick Runtsch Yes, all four on the rear wheel. I salvaged the 29 wheel with repairs in Silverthorne. However, I had family drive 4 hours to meet me there to swap for a 27.5 wheelset to continue the ride. Seemed slower, but a more robust wheelset.
Great talk (and ride), Nick! Snow in the north, monsoon in the south: It was quite the year! We had a very poor experience at Lava Mountain Lodge, too. Same problems as you but several of us were also over-charged, not to mention enforced "service fees" instead of tips, and just a bit of an attitude of treating patrons as an inconvenience. Have to say that was our only truly negative accommodation experience, however. Lots of wonderful hosts, some of whom went above and beyond and gave some hungry cyclists extra food at no additional cost.
Same experience here too
Great talk Nick!
