Colorado Plankers

Dewie was a full time ski instructor for Vail Resorts and is also an offroad/overland youtuber. However he really is just a videomaker and wants to get back into making helpful ski videos in the winter. The first 20 will have a vlog like feel while still focusing on making videos that are useful. After that, we may continue that style or transition into guides similar to what you see on the Colorado Mallcrawlers channel, just instead with skiing. Hope you'll join me as we try to make great skiing content!
A POV skiing tour of THE LEGEND | Arapahoe Basin
Arapahoe Basin is a resort I use to ski a lot, but this is the first time I cruised there. Unpopular opinion, but the greatest resort in Colorado would be Keystone and ABasin connected together. Anyway, the Legend is a fun place, especially if you’re in hiking shape.
Colorado Plankers: When I first started youtube I made skiing videos and offroad videos. The offroad content took off so that became an offroad/overland channel (Colorado Mallcrawlers). However, I love skiing as much as I love exploring Colorado in my Jeeps. Colorado Plankers is my attempt to bring my skiing knowledge (years of being regarded as an excellent ski instructor) and my love of videomaking to an audience that is into skiing. If that's you, come join me as I try to build this channel! Eventually I want to make insider skiing guides (see Keystone guides on Colorado Mallcrawlers), High Quality POVs, and I'd love to film abandoned colorado ski resorts/backcountry skiing cinematically. Next season we’ll roll out our high quality insider ski guides so subscribe and tell me which ski resorts you want me to cover as I’ll cover subscriber requests first. This season, I have a big surprise for y’all… if you like it, I’ll do more trips like it in following years. -Dewie

A POV skiing tour of Winter Park | no talking, no music

A POV skiing tour of Winter Park Ski Area. Winter Park was looking especially scenic on this day (is it more scenic than Keystone, Crested Butte, Telluride, Aspens? well, we could debate that endlessly). We’ll start in the Winter Park area, then we will move on to Vasquez Ridge, followed by Mary Jane, and finally to the Panoramic Express/Parsenn Bowl. We will cover the Cirque, Eagle Wind, and t...
25 Minutes of POV skiing at Copper Mountain | no talking, no music

A Copper Mountain POV skiing tour. I will take you on the longer runs from the Copper Mountain side. Figured it can be used for pre-trip intel or just as some calm skiing ambiance. I'm working on getting these right and will continue to film them at different mountains and of different lengths. Run data was taken from the Slopes app using my iphone for the GPS data. BOA on alpine boots is the newest change to ski boots in recent years. Does this new heavy duty BOA system work on downhill boots? A temporarily retired ski instructor gives you his unbiased experience using these new boots (2024 Solomon S Pro BOA 120). A POV skiing tour of Steamboat Ski Resort | no talking, no music

My first attempt at creating a POV ski tour of Steamboat Ski Resort. I will take you on runs from the main lifts at Steamboat Ski Resort. Figured it can be used for pre-trip intel or just as some calm skiing ambiance. I didn't film a run off the new Mahogany lift yet because I'll probably shoot a different kind of video back there. Run data was taken from the Slopes app using my iphone for the ...

My skiing has suffered in recent years due to being on call 24/7 and rarely having an off day. I’m returning to skiing this season at Steamboat and wanted to share the tips I knew for getting back your lost ski skills. I’m hoping this will help you return to skiing. Steamboat Ski Resort’s Easiest Trail | Why Not Top to Bottom
Переглядів 2,5 тис.9 місяців тому
A skiing POV of Steamboat Ski Resort's Why Not trail. A 3.2 mile easy trail that meanders around the mountain. This long trail is perfect for beginners as it doesn't have any steep slopes to worry about (made skiing it fast tougher). Why Not also has lots of wildlife educational signs and I promise you will see a real moose in this video (filmed by me and a bit too close for comfort). Anyway, t...
Said it before, love the no talk, no music vids. Just POV letting me feel like I'm there on those skis. Thanx
I love the POV with No music or talking, and No wasted time showing your highway drive time. Just the sound of the wind and skis on snow. Makes people that can't be there feel like they're actually skiing. Thanx
Great footage. Offers great terrain recon for groomers. And yes, smooth is much better if you want people to watch. No one likes to get motion sickness
I just became ware of your videos on 10/25/2024. They’re really great! Very informative, no annoying music, great sound and they really give the viewer a great skier’s perspective of each of the trails that you capture. I also like how you show the viewer in advance, the route that you’re about to take. You have nothing to apologize for about the quality of any of the videos that I’ve seen so far. Keep making great videos like the ones that you’ve done so far!
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Great job filming, I love these wide frame shots going down the hills you get a real good feel for the runs and the resort. Too many other videos makes you feel nauseous with close-ups and movement. And showing what run you’re on is awesome. Thanks for what you do.
I’m glad you like the format!
This video got me so pumped for ski season to start 🙌 🔥
Heck yeah!
I watch a fair number of DIY ski videos. Yours are amazing. I love the no music, smooth footage, and great editing. Soooo relaxing...thank you for doing these.
Wow, thank you! My offroad channel has been very busy, but I hope to keep refining these ski vids this winter. Mostly povs since I don’t have time to edit the guides i want to bring to the channel (35 offroad vids to edit right now).
Thank you for skiing safe and respecting all your fellow riders. Great example of how to have FUN!!!
I'm glad you noticed the safe riding!
Man i hate the slow signs the offen pose more of a hazard than they avoid lol 😂 😂 especially on icy days all the good snow gets swept off..,
Lol, I get that, but there’s no slow signs on the steeper stuff 😉
Thanks for this video ! I am from the UK and looking for next years destination, me and my son are both boarders , 60 and 25 years young and long cruiser blues hit the spot for us ! We were in Park City last year which was great but not so many cruisers there , Steamboat looks to fit the bill and your video confirms this to us 🤠 🏂 🎉
Glad it was helpful! I’m getting so far behind on the offroad/overland channel that I may need to focus on that this winter, but we will have guides on here one day. Thanks for watching!
Love how smooth and clear this is! I can't get out much from health issues so I'm really happy you're doing this.
I’ll have more next winter! Thanks for watching!
Why (the fuqk) Not is a trail indeed... forget about width here, a service road it is. SBS 2003 - 2015 😊
Yeah, I was a snow maker briefly and made good use of those service roads!
I am thinking about going to Steamboat with a ski club in January 2025. Never skiied out west before. This gave me a very good insight into what I might expect to encounter. At my age blues and groomed blacks are about as adventurous as I want to go. Excellent video! Thanks!!
You’ll have a great time!
Just the video I was looking for. Thanks for sharing! Like the trail name and stats,.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tips! They'll definetly help me get back in the saddle. The new channel looks awesome and I can tell you're having a great time both skiing and filming. Keep up the great work!
Thanks buddy! I’m so glad you’re an awesome editor that makes poorly filmed 4WD videos easily watchable! Might need you over here on ski vids one day 😉
is the elevation too much for someone who has never been to colorado, or is that true for any resort in CO?
Copper ranges from 9700ft to 12300ft. You would need to adjust to it if you’re coming from a low elevation state. You’d probably have better luck at steamboat which is at a lower elevation.
Have the BOA on my new anon helmet and its great. Not a fan of BOA on ski or snowboard boots, had issues with my first set of ThirtyTwo BOA snowboard boots, the mechanism only lasted 2 season. Purchased Vans with normal laces and still using them 5 years later with no issues.
I get that, we’ll see how my BOA boots hold up. Day 35 so far… no issues.
Another like here for your format. Gives me a great feel for what to expect - well done!
Thank you! I’m glad people like them. Next year, I’ll start doing top to bottom difficult runs too.
I will be at Copper on 3/21 and am going to try Rossi's run for the first time. I'm 62 and haven't taken a Black diamond since I was 18, but since it's groomed, I think I can handle it. Pretty excited.
You got it!
Great Job, Thanks Much!
Glad it was helpful!
Pure joy
I’m glad you like it!
this is a fantastic idea. a video of each run would get a ton of views - particularly from greenies trying to figure out/prepare for the longer runs and which ones we can survive 😂
Thanks, yeah… I like filming them. I’ll have one vid of all of Steamboat’s greens before I go back to making off-road content for my other channel. Next winter, this channel will get kicked into high gear.
sheared it off first day. all he had to say
That’s your choice, but I haven’t sheared it off since (I was also extremely rusty on day 2). I now hit the chutes and hike terrain every time I ski Steamboat without any BOA issues. You may have missed that it was easily fixed by the boot shop. I’ve ripped off buckles to the point that they’re not fixable.
💪 *Promo SM*
Great video! I especially like no music… just the sound of the snow and nature
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
We used to stay in the Ski Time Square condos back in the 80’s…it was ski in/ ski out so they were nice..not sure if they are there anymore. My brothers liked to go to the Tug Boat bar at night 😅
Ski Time Square is still around, but unfortunately Tug Boat is permanently closed. There’s some other places, but I know people miss tugboat.
I grew up skiing Steamboat every year -first time was in ‘83…then every year until ‘89… my husband and I have gone several times since 2012.. my favorite ski resort. We plan on going back next year. Thanks for the videos..my favorite run is Cowboy Coffee (love the scenery) and Why Not (just a fun run)… yes, continue making these videos!
Awesome! I’ll keep making them and I’ll make a real skiing guide on Steamboat this month. Let me know how I do with that.
Loving these trail guide videos, keep them coming! Would love to see some more advanced and expert terrain guides at some point too.
I’m skiing trees and steeps again. The POVs of those aren’t continuous yet, but I’ll put them in some extra POVs I’ll publish later. Next season I’ll make more POVs and I’ll make 20 minute high yield but efficient beginner and intermediate/expert guides of different resorts (just ordered an epic pass and I’ll renew the icon too).
Where I’m from you don’t accelerate or brake on a bridge with ice. Or make sharp movements of the steering wheel.
Definitely!
or do any of that on a regular road, either.... ;)
Great Video. What camera did you use to record?
Thank you! GoPro hero 11 black on helmet mount. I’m still dialing in the settings and trying to ski in a way that keeps it stable.
Thanks. Trying to decide on the Hero 11 or 12. The 11 in your videos looks great for what I’ll be using it for.
I use GoPros mostly as a trail cam and high risk cam in the off-road videos. I use a 10, 11, 11mini… they’re all pretty similar, but there is a difference from my 7 (old trail cam) to 10/11. Good luck!
Another gimmick? I don’t buy gimmicks anymore.
Maybe so, but they’re great!
Great information.
Thank you! I’ve never been good at making these kind of videos so I’m trying to figure it out.
Keystone is the most scenic… You know that Dewie!
You’re biased lol
Telluride is by far the most scenic
It’s definitely scenic, I honestly find them all scenic.
Yes they are all gorgeous
Why not runs into Right O Way that goes to the base. I use to stay at Storm Meadows bld #400 quite a bit in the ‘80’s when it was ski in ski out. Now they’ve built those condos in front so it’s just ski in. lol. Progress. Hmm.
lol, yeah, Steamboat is an interesting mountain. Adding Wild Blue and putting a lift on Mahogany have been controversial to some of my local friends here. Still, I’m a fan, but I do miss Keystone’s long and fast cruisers… that’s the one thing missing here. The longest fast runs take only a 1-3 minutes to get down at Steamboat where Keystone’s were 5-7 minutes. However, I do like the chutes, the trees, and hike terrain here. It’s a fun mountain!
Ah. I finally found your new channel. I like the POV vids with slope information but also other types of vids as well. It keeps things interesting. We really liked the 3 Keystone videos as they were very instructional since we were going to Keystone to teach our daughter to ski in (2020) and I had not been to keystone since the 90’s. It may have been your knowledge of the resort that made them so good. If you’re adding the epic pass next year try to get Beaver Creek in as well. We hope to get there in the next couple of years. Thanks Kyle.
I’m just trying to build this channel this winter. Because I still do a lot of the work on the off-road channel, I am getting a little pushback for devoting time to this one. Still, I’m about to finally get time off, I love skiing, and this channel is getting me healthy again… so I’ll keep it going. This channel will eventually be in person ski guides of all the Colorado/Utah/New Mexico resorts like the keystone vids. I think they’ll be better than the keystone videos and I’m going to evolve them a little (I’ll experiment a little this winter). Next winter I’ll recruit my friends to be the subjects of these videos (like the other off-road vehicles in the overland vids). People seem to like POVs so I’ll do those too. The POVs are also useful for me as I reacquaint myself with all the resorts and work on fine tuning my skiing. I might have two non-POVs and one Winter Park POV this week… just depends on my job. Glad you’re here.
The BOA is great for those skiers that want an option. I ski with it on the Fischer RC4 MV 130. The BOA enables you to have micro adjustments and it allows the shell to close nicely over your foot. I for one endorse it. Just my opinion.
I’m in full agreement.
My parents had a townhouse at Storm Meadows in the 70’s. I used to catch this trail where the road ended and the trail began. I would bring my dirt bike from California for the summer. The trail was down below the first row of townhouses one thru twelve.
Very cool!
Heading to Steamboat shortly. Thanks for the intel ahead of time! Great job
Awesome! I’ll film more in detail vids of various resorts as I know them all pretty good (especially the Epic resorts), but people seem to like these so I’ll keep making them.
Huge fan of the BOA system on snowboard boots (I'll never go back to laces or speed laces) and I'm fairly confident they will work well for ski boots also. I understand dual BOA ski boots are on their way also.
The new system is quite beefy. I’m not sure I’d use it on the upper part as I like buckles there (it’s where ski power really comes from). However, I’m truly loving it for the lower part. So much flexibility and quick to adjust while skiing.
These are my boots too! Skied in them for two weeks now, boa fit is better than traditional clips for me. I feel more in control of the ski and have more sensitivity in my feet to make tiny adjustments in pressure, edging and rotation.
My thoughts exactly. I’m really starting to push them now and I love how tight I can get them before dropping something sketchy. Then after, loosen them up. Really neat new feature. Glad the boots that fit me the best had them.
I really like the concept of the system, but the fact that you sheared it off, says a lot.
Have you not sheared off a buckle because I have. I couldn’t get those buckles repaired, but had this repaired in the base area in about 5 minutes.
Great video!
Thanks! The next one is gonna be better… a storm rolled in, but got some fast runs and good scenery in. Now into the bumps.
Your videos remind me of when I use to ski. Those days are long gone now, but I do enjoy you going down the mtn nonstop. That was how I always liked to do it.
Me too! I like all kinds of skiing, but there’s something about a nice long run. I’m going to try to document 14 (2 in each area) top to bottoms at Winter Park next month for the next POV.
Make more like this. Really enjoyed it. thanks.
Should have another tomorrow! 25 minutes of Copper Mountain. Still improving them tho.
Enjoy watching your videos. I also like how you include the stats of each run. Good job 👍
Glad you like them! I should have one of Copper tomorrow. Still trying to get them right.
Also I wouldn't worry about the tree/bump skiing being too shaky for these videos, I think the image stabilization is good enough that the POV would still be great for those runs too. I actually find those to be the most helpful for getting to "scope out" new zones before I get a chance to ski them!
I will start filming black runs in POV format eventually. Black run POVs will likely have me following one of my instructor buddies. They’re all still on epic and I’m on ikon so it’s a next year thing (I’ll get both passes in 24/25 since my work will finally be on 11 days on call with 4 days off call [currently I’m on call 24/7 365 days/yr]). This year is mostly about trying new things and growing this channel… however, I’m going to settle in to POV videos and various resort guides mostly.
I love this video format, including the trail map highlights and run name notes is extremely helpful!
Glad to hear it! I just filmed one at Copper yesterday. I’m perfectionist with my videos, skiing, and wheeling… I just want it all to be the best I can do. I still have work to do, but I feel it’s attainable so I’ll keep making videos here.
Going in two weeks for first time. This is helpful! Good job!
Glad to hear it! On my offroad channel, I made skiing guides of Keystone that were well received. I’ll likely film a few different types of guide evolving those Keystone vids on Steamboat soon (next week). Then I’ll try to make the ones that people like on other resorts next season. I’ll do more POVs this season tho.
Absolutely loved that. Grew up skiing Steamboat so watching you brought back memories of some of the slopes. Would def watch other resorts 👍🏻 good work.
I will definitely make more POVs and will probably make them of different lengths. I’m doing a few different types of videos this year, but I like making POVs so they’ll continue on. Not sure all the other video types will tho.
