How to Varnish Your Acrylic Painting (Tutorial)
Переглядів 85 тис.5 років тому
Here's a fast and effective method to varnish your piece of art. I've used this method to varnish many paintings and it's proven to be very useful. I use a lightly, lightly moist sponge to spread out the fluid varnish across the piece. It's about as easy as it gets. Subscribe and comment below! Would love to hear from you and your experiences. Always looking out for new techniques!

Removing Masking Tape from Wall Mural

Taking the tape down from between the first two panels of the new mural. Sometimes tape works, sometimes it doesn't, but this came out great! At first thought the original source image was a vintage illustration, but the longer I looked at it, the more contemporary it seemed to me. So, I did some investigation and tracked down the original artist Bruno Pozzo from Issy-les-Moulineaux, France. He...

Knife and Drizzle Acrylic Painting Technique Demo

Knife and Drizzle Acrylic Painting Technique Demo
Hi Roy! Thanks for your video! Wondering if you find using matte varnish dulls your paint colors or gives it a milky film? or do the colors look the same as they do without the varnish? I like the look of my raw painting. I want to use a matte varnish but I'm worried it will leave a milky film to it
Mr. Laws, do you have any advice about "beading on acrylic paintings? With this technique have you ever seen "beading", where the varnish won't adhere to the painting? Thank you so much.
I have not ever experienced that before. Is there some finish you're putting on before the varnish or something odd about the paint? that's a new one.
@@roylawsart7456 Thank you Mr. Laws for responding. A lot of artists are having a problem with what they call "beading". My painting was clean, nothing else was put on in advance. I just applied gamvar glossy varnish. It did cover the dark areas ok, but on the lighter areas the gamvar wouldn't even touch it. I am going to buy the liquitex varnish in your video and see if it will help me. You work on a painting, just to get hot spots. Thank you so much!
@@cattvaughn That is really strange. I haven't used anything but liquitex and haven't had any problems. I don't know if that's the issue or not, but if you put a new layer on top of the old, theoretically it should even it all out. Good luck! I'm curious how this one works out.
@@roylawsart7456 Mr. Laws, I found out that maybe I was using too much varnish and the wrong brush. I am going to try your method and the other method of NOT using too much varnish and rubbing it in. I will try both ways on one of my old panels. I pray one of the techniques will work. Thank you so much!
That’s one epic painting 😮 And yeah my first instinct was why not just poor it on lol. 😂
thanks!
This was the best most straight forward video on varnishing a painting that I have seen in YT. Great work and thank you for keeping it short and so simple. 👏
no problemo, hope it helps out in the future
Thanks for sharing! You mentioned a clear coat before varnish. Clear coat of what product?
The spray I use is Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating 1303
What clearcoat do you use prior to varnish?
Thank you. Do you use an isolation coat?
OMG so much easier. Thank you.
i'm glad it helped!
Dude...Im glad someone finally showed a sponge and varnish is absolutely the best way to Varnish....and it takes 25 seconds...Similar to my artwork as well
hope it helped!
Very cool painting. Love the technique. Really speeds up the process.
THANK YOU ROY I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING STREAKS IN MY PAINTINGS. I LUV THE WAY YOU VARNISH IT. I AM CHANGING TO THIS WAY.💥💥💥💥💥
hope it works!
You make vanishing a painting so easy. Thanks!!!
Thanks for the reply and for sharing this process. I did put a second coat. It made the process so much easier while protecting our paintings. As you said I just made sure I checked with good lighting.
Thank you for teaching me this!
You're welcome, I hope it comes in handy!
Thank you Roy. It really helped out. Did you do more than one coat of varnish and if yes how long did you wait between coats? Much appreciated!
I've gotten to where I can usually get it correct the first time. But for years I've put a couple on there. Usually when it's dry you can put another on there so I'd wait like 30 minutes, even though really it's pretty dry after around 15. If it's very textured, I'll check it pretty often to make sure it's not pooling up anywhere because it'll get opaque if it's too thick in places.
Glad to come across someone else who likes satin varnish. Seems most varnishing videos use gloss. Your method looks worth a try.
Got a commision to redo this cat table It's painted wood 2:34
Hi, class painting! What is the layer of clear coat you say u use before adding the varnish? Is it a specific product or medium, and may i ask what brand. thankyou
Krylon 1303 Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating Spray
@@roylaws5534 awesome, thanks 4 that!
Roy, thanks for this, I'm new to varnishing and your video makes it easy, not so scary!! Don't think I missed you saying how many coats, would you do at least one more? Thanks!
If I'm lucky, I get it all correct on the first coat. But, sometimes it takes a couple to get everything even.
@@roylawsart7456 Excellent thankyou! 😊👍👍
What kind of sponge is that and where can I find it????
I wish I could remember! I've experimented with several types and that one is the best, but I have no memory of where I got it. I believe it is a car wash sponge though.
@roylaws406 all of the car wash sponges I've found are the plastic foam kind!
@@stephaniel8164 Oh yeah, I've gotten some of those as well, they suck!
Brilliant. Drew up something loosely and came searching for a similar concept to solve a similar issue. 👍🏻
Great info. So do you only use a big sponge so it doesn't streak? Thank you
Yep, just goes a lot faster using a bigger sponge I find. I'm all about making it as easy as possible!
Spray clear coat of what?....
It's Krylon Crystal Clear spray, only use it to keep pencil marks from being rubbed off.
Need more!
Hey Roy you think using this method on a printed banner would work ????
Great Idea, I've been working much larger these days and have had so much difficulty varnishing large canvases. Wish I'd seen this sooner. I'm now trying to make a fix on one of my pieces from a varnish mess. Ahh.
Yeah, I was always worried about varnishing large pieces just because of the streaks. This really makes it fast and smooth.
Thank you so much for this information and demonstration. You’ve taken the fear out of varnishing! Great painting too! 🙏👏👍
Thanks! hope it helps out!
How long to dry or let the painting set before the finish. And how long to let that set before you can lift and move the painting without varnish running?
Can you do this with collage on canvas? I’m worried the sponge will ruin some of the glued elements. I feel a brush would be more gentle for collage.
Hmmm, that's probably true. I'd use a brush to get up under the pieces.
how long to wait before you varnish a completed painting?
Do you draw them first before painting?
yep. I have to have faces already drawn out before I do live ones, too easy for me to mess up otherwise
Hey I know this video was filmed 5 years ago and more as a tutorial but i wanted to appreciate the painting :)). The colours are really nicely chosen, great job
Thank you very much! Even though it's been up for awhile, I still get comments on this one all the time. Glad you enjoyed!
Great video. I stuffed up an important painting with a brush. BTW I love your artwork.
if you re-varnish it, it might clean it up. I've had someone on here say they did that.
Thank you Roy! I hate using a brush because I get the streaks as well. Love the painting!
Thanks for watching, I hope it helps!
I'll let you know ;-)
You said you first used clear coat because you use pencils can you tell me which clear coat you used . I to use pencils . Thanks so much I am feeling better about vanishing my painting .😊
I use something called Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating 1303!
I am sorry I forgot to ask do you use the matte finish on the clear spray ?
Did you use the matte or gloss for the Krylon crystal clear acrylic coating? I am going to use it to seal any pencil but plan on using the satin finish for varnish
I use sponge brushes to apply varnish. Works great.
Roy, I didn’t put the paint in the paste , so I wonder, do I have to use a lot more paint to cover my large canvas? Or can I mix the paint with water? Will it wreck my paste?
Can you do multiple coats with this method?
if you miss a spot you can go back and do another coat if you'd like!
Amazing video and it works perfectly Thank you
Hi Roy, so glad to see your tutorial today! I’ll definitely give it a try on my acrylic paintings. One question - after use, can the sponge be washed and cleaned for future use? Thanks for your tips ❤
of course! I've had the same one for quite a long time now.
Wow. Never seen this method before! So, one coat does it? Where do you get that type of sponge? The guitar is smashing! Well, we don’t really want to do that. 😅
You, Sir, have just given me years of my life back. Varnish days are my very least favourite studio time. All the time I'll get back just in the hours of procrastinating! 😂 Thank you!
it's so much faster! I hope it helps.
what do you use as a clear coat? do we need to do an isolation coat before applying varnish? thank you!!
Nope! don't need it. I only use to to keep pencil marks from smearing and disappearing. But,
What type of clear coat??
I use Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic coating! But, that's only because some of my paintings have pencil on it. If it doesn't have the pencils, I don't use it.
Interesting approach- seems easier with a sponge
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME
What clear coat did you use to seal the pencil lines?
It's called Krylon Crystal Clear and I use it on anything that I have pencil marks on
Do yiu just do one coat?
I was so pleased with a recent painting only to leave behind brush marks after varnishing. I saw your video and tried the sponge with a 3rd coat and it smoothed it out. I'll definitely be using this method from now on! Thanks for the video!
So glad it worked out!
This war really helpful, thanks a lot man!
No problem, thanks for watching!
