Andrew Allan Guitars Q and A Episode 1
I'm confused. Wouldn't it be easier to rout out the backside sand leave the front as original?
Unless you have a really big fan-base you can't just build a guitar and think it's gonna sell, the market is full of guitars, both new and used guitars. I know several guitar builders that are making a living out of guitar building, they charge at least 3500 bucks for each guitar, all handmade, with that said its not a guitar you make from an old kitchen table. It's the highest quality woods you can ever imagine, and the highest quality hardware you can think of, maybe not the most expensive though. Unquendor Guitars from the Netherlands is a really good example and I would consider him to be one of the best guitar builders in the world even though that he is just a small one-man brand. Look at he´s UA-cam videos and you will see what I am talking about, you want to build and sell guitars.. that's what you gotta do to succeed. Another approach is of course to let a factory build the guitars for you, and you get the guitar shipped to your house and you just do a QC and final setup, you can probably sell that guitar for around 800 to 1500 depending on hardware and pickups. your profit.. hmm maybe 3-400 bucks which is good because you didn't put in the time to build it. Thanks.
Very cool, thank you. I just discovered that my Acoustic/Electric Epiphone has this exact issue. Now I know how to repair it myself...Ty
Thanks...Is there a hack you can do to prevent this from happening again? This keeps reoccurring every so often...My end pin/jack keeps getting loose and so I keep tightening it about every other day until I have to do what you did in the video.
This was helpful. I’ve been scratching my head about neck pockets.
The only important part is how to get the spatula in at first. That is the part that is missing. The spatula won't go in without some first step that is missing.
Did you mention what you glued the binding on with ? How did you hold the binding on as you glued it ? Did you tape it on as you worked around ? Or did you whack on the glue all round --and then looked for the binding ? To get the binding off the knife was a bad idea . Just a short screwdriver would do that with your thumb against the body to sop it skidding over the side. Ang you tried to speed up as you went . Don`t speed up . Maybe have something to hold down the yellow bits --carefully as you go .
lol .... why?????? ... wow ... grow up!!!!
I think you do need to remove the frets first.
Hello from another Andrew Allan. I was trying to find info on how to change the selector switch on 1964 Hofner Committee and came across your channel. I'm a bassist but play guitar as well. I also try to do all my repairs, setups, etc, myself. Good luck with your channel.
Is gluing the body common practice? I believe it could be made of 1 piece of wood? Are there advantages/disadvantages of glued body or does it have no impact at all?
1 piece body are more likely to warp where multi piece body are less likely to warp
Möhö möhö and möhö.
How long did you wait to for the glue to dry?
Couple hours
😂 1:46
What the fk is the point of this? I have plenty of SD pickups. I came here looking for mods like a magnet change or something but you just wasted my time
Why did you sit here and watch it then? Seems very counter intuitive, unless you’re trying to be a grifter of course.
@ Are you his smooth brained boyfriend or something?
Thank you for helping me get my baby back in play!
That's why repairs could keep you alive until you gain a reputation as a builder ( if you do?)....Set-up's, re-frets, neck sets, electronics,.... on and on,.....Good Luck.
This is great. I suggest practicing the process on a spare piece of wood before trying it on a body you have invested a few hours in.
What are the odds? I have the exact same guitar with the same problem! First video I watched on how to fix it! Thanks!
Great technique
Seems like being a very small operation and building only one instrument at a time is not the way to go? If you could somehow scale up to say, making ten instruments at the same time maybe that would be the way? That would take a large investment in materials and shop equipment. Hmmm. No easy answers I guess.
Sweet, love this approach! Much more my style.
What about maple fretboards? My strat copy has a very whippy neck and I would like to stiffen it with some carbon fiber or titanium rods. Are they more difficult to remove? I fear one will see damage when gluing it back on.
What an idiot. You think you're funny? You're not.
The way you slide that guitar back and forth across your wood bench will never attract business of we who care about our finish.
Your guitar wasn’t special. That’s why I didn’t sell
Good point
That's exactly what its all about ..
I have a classical guitar which are more delicate and I'm worried that so much heat could cause issues. Since I would like to completely replace the fretboard with a new one, would it be safer to plane or sand off the fretboard so that no heat is involved ?
I find my strats and teles cost about 400$-500$ in materials. I build everything minus the the metal hardware. My calculation is about 1800$-2000$ per guitar. If people say "gosh that's expensive", I say "Yeah you're right". They can go kick rocks.
Great job! GREAT idea! Exactly what I was looking for so good video! Thx!
yinzer. i knew when he said iron
Hey Andrew are you planning to keep uploading vids?
Excellent job !
Thanks for the video
Thank you sir!
That was fkn depressing. I'm glad I never sat down and ran the numbers quite like that. Not arguing with your logic, but I think there's more complexity involved. First off, you're never gonna be able to compete with ginormous multi-national, billion-dollar companies and their efficiencies of scale so you have to separate and distinguish yourself from that run of the mill production guitar idea. You know what all the most profitable companies sell? Image. Lifestyle. Aesthetic. People buy Apple computers not because they are the best computers (they aren't) but because of what it says about who they are. Not only do they buy MacBooks, iPhones & iPads, they pay ridiculously inflated prices for them and would be suspicious if the prices were normal. They are convinced they're buying something special. So what you have is more of a marketing & sales problem than anything. Especially if you've only sold 3 guitars in 15 years. You gotta figure out what your value-add is, and communicate that in a way that makes it appealing. No matter what that might be. Maybe you make surf guitars. Maybe everything is handmade, maybe the customer can specify every part... whatever it is... to encourage people to say 'yes! take my money now. and next week!' Beyond that, there are ways for you to decrease your costs and increase your production from what you've stated. No-one ever said it was gonna be easy. And your skills and interests are most likely along the lines of luthier work and not the all-encompassing multi-facets aspects of the whole marketing/sales, establishing business relationships, managing production processes, managing financials, customer service, etc. that is involved in running a profitable company of any size. So, no matter how you slice it, expect it to be a challenging endeavor that pushes you to learn more, be more efficient, and put in work in many aspects which are not what inspired you to want to build guitars. I say this as someone who lost their full-time job almost 3 years ago, not remotely financially prepared, suffered some health issues, lost my mom to dementia & other health issues, etc and has somehow managed to support myself in that time solely by building & selling guitars and buying old instruments and musical gear, repairing, restoring, modding, them and selling them primarily on Reverb as well as eBay. It has not been easy AT ALL, but i'm gaining confidence in my ability to do this 'for reals'. Every bill & expense I have has increased in that time and it's almost like a game-show sometimes how it feels to scrape together the funds for every bill, mortgage payment and sourcing parts to have something to sell. It is not ideal, but I've managed this long. I'm not gonna give up now! If I can do it. You can do it. It's a matter of midset. For me the drive has been that I have no other alternative than make this work, really. Anyways. more power to you brother. I wish you only the best. And if I can somehow help you, message me and I'll do whatever I can. Later!
Have you ever thought about doing diy ķits. Maybe u can sell those faster.
Great Jig mate, but you need get your table stable or you will lose a finger.
Something tells me he isn't doing this anymore.
Now, a lot more. Some guy wanted me to make a guitar for him for 300. I just don't do that. No profit these days.
Good info if you know what what you talking about
Great video, but your crickets were seriously competing with you.
That is brilliant!!! Thank you for sharing this!!!
My strap button is hard as hell to remove like rusty.how can i remove it
2 sided tape should have been larger
I have increased my antidepressant dose after this video. Doctor told me that I have to double the dosage for every %20 volume up.
Heat the spatula also
You don't want to heat a scraper/spatula with plastic/rubber handle.
I’ve got a 1979 Strat that weighs 12.5lbs. In the end I got another body made that weighs 5lbs and transferred everything over. It might be a partscaster to some, but it’s a much better guitar.
good job.
Thanks Andrew.
Hey brother I think that was a very good video I hope you're doing better now I'm kind of like you but I'm a little on the lucky side the town I'm in has a big music scene
You sir are an absolute genius. thanks for your video
