    How was it written? They listened to the song 'The Air That I Breath', written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and then copied the tune.

      thx for the reference, I did hear a similar fragment of melody and there is a reference to angels, but other than that, if they copied anything they hid it well (and made it their own…).

      Hola Jorge, no hablo español (solo música :), pero según google... los cambios de un acorde al siguiente son solo por semitono. dos acordes (III y iv), que no están en la tonalidad, hacen que esta progresión de acordes sea realmente interesante. ¡Confía en tu oído y disfruta de la música! (y dame dos años para aprender un poco de español :)

    Great analysis! I hear the verse in Dminor thought. When the chords are playing the CMaj7 or Gmaj7 in the verse they both have the Bb sharped up to B giving it a Lydian mode feel. This seems to be supported with the melody at least to my ears. Also in a lot of tame impala songs he takes chords that would normally be minor and makes them a major 7th chords, in some cases he even takes the diminished 7 and flattens the root note and plays a major 7th. This really helps add to a dreamy psychedelic sound.

    • @leepat
      @leepat 8 місяців тому

      yeah, you could say the verse is D minor, but D dorian then, because of the B natural. (it also makes sense because D minor is the relative minor of F major, but the ingenious modulation is to use the dorian (natural 6th) instead of the aeolian (flat 6th). not sure what you mean by a diminished 7th with a flattened root though. that would simply be a dominant seventh chord half a step below the diminished one in my book…

    Hey Lee, would you talk about the bass line because I think the bass hits an A note in the chorus while the chord on top is Gm. That's an interesting marriage but what's the music theory behind it? Nice little vid man.

    • @leepat
      @leepat 7 років тому

      Hey man, thanks. It's unusual indeed to hear the 9th of a chord in the bass line, which by rule of thumb accentuates the most stable notes of a chord (the root and the fifth). In this case, the bass is obviously playing a melodic line as a counterpoint to the main melody. When you see it this way, it's less unusual, and the 9th does go well with a minor chord (try playing Gm with A in the melody to hear for yourself). On top of that A does not fall on a strong beat like 1 or 3 (it's between beat 3 and 4). And besides adding colour, playing A adds tension by anticipating the next chord (F), in which A is the 3rd degree - not the most stable one, but not as unstable as the 9th is, and so finally the tension is resolved to a certain point. Hope that helps :)
