It was the way in which Matt went about things that ultimately he's to blame for this mess. Stating in going "nuclear" while other hosting companies are ignored. Using mafia style tactics in order to extract his 8% from a hosting competitor. Harming the community users when he blocked WPEngine's access damaged his and Wordpress' reputation. The outright theft of a plugin with his flimsy excuse of "forking" it while the URL slug was the same. Matt only cares for himself and thought the community would rally behind him but, he has shown how much of a petty, unprofessional, narcissist he is. Thanks Matt for forcing us to side with the PE firm in order to keep open source, open.

The biggest issue that is missed in discussions of this issue, is this: The victim in this case are the users and customers of WP Engine, and the greater Wordpress community as a whole. It is not either WP Engine or Automattic/Matt Mullenweg.

It is very simple: Big private equity parasites open source and give nothing back. Giant corporate VS open source. If WP engine wins, open source is dead. So Matt is right. Maybe not the beat course of action, but he is essentially right. Mat did not ask money for him, or for Automatic as you said, he asked money ( OR HOURS OF WORK ) for wordpress project !!! Big, big difference.

Notably, the "Please don't use WP" is a new addition to the trademark policy as a result of Mullenweg's feud with WPEngine. It wasn't there until very recently. And in fact for a short time they tried to claim that "WP" _was_ a trademark. It's not because a) that's STUPID and b) it's legally stupid to a degree that the courts have already ruled that it's stupid and no you can't claim such a trademark. So they've fallen back on this and tried to scrub the Internet of Mullenweg's scummy efforts to drive WPEngine out of business, poach its employees (via threats and intimidation when "offers" failed), and other acts of supreme scumbaggery. Matt Mullenweg is not a hero. He is not a champion of open source. And while I would not claim for an instant that WPEngine did not do everything they could to take advantage of open source to enhance their bottom line … Mullenweg went full psychotic douchebag to the extent that he even tried tried to abusively exploit women in pursuit of driving the competition out of business. A disgusting bully, and the sort of little man who would never dream of taking on someone who could fight back, but is infinitely willing to target people who he thinks cannot in the most horrible and petty ways. Including but not limited to trying to make it so WPEngine employees and perhaps even customers were not able to use wordpress.ORG to get the latest source code. And like all true cowards,. when the Internet called him on his disgusting behavior, he tried to have what he could of it scrubbed from the Internet. But the Internet does not forget. And it does not easily forgive his type when they are exposed for what they are, either. It's been a very long time since I used wordpress, but I definitely will never touch the project again as long as that bastard has any control over it whatsoever. A fork maybe, but Wordpress? When hell freezes.

(I havent watched the video yet) One thing i can understand about this whole drama: The software might be open source, but the keyword "wordpress" and "wp" which is easily associated with "wordpress" is not. But the drama goes way deeper than that

What does it means: WP Engine is a proud member and supporter of the community of WordPress® users. This text was on wpengine website at the bottom of the front page. The text did show that wpengine does not give a F about the development of WordPress, otherwise they would have mentioned the donations/help they provide to WordPress foundation. If I plant a mango tree and I have a sign thee saying to water the plant and someone just keep eating the mangoes but never waters is definitely the action making me angry.

WP Engine isn't the good guy in this story but Matt is infinitely worse and went fully mask off about what kind of person he really is. He not only clearly demonstrated his conflict of interest but weaponized WordPress, the WordPress website and the WordPress foundation, all of which are supposedly independent or separate entities, only to illegally pressure a rival of his hosting company to pay money to his foundation. Many open source projects have BDFLs - benevolent dictators for life. Matt has demonstrated that he wants that title but doesn't care about the B. He burnt all of that goodwill WordPress has built and made the project a huge liability. If WordPress fragments, it's entirely his fault.

Hey, just found out about your channel, amazing video, you are very underrated I am sure one day you will become a big youtuber. Only one problem, while you talk slow and steady, you move to fast, I cant understand various concepts. And you just gave me a tutorial, didnt explain much so i can't replicate what you just taught but can just copy paste it. I am a new, not even developer, learner i would say and my head is spinning from the amount of information I am seeing in front of me. I cant even understand what branch of coding this is, is this java, C++ or what? What is docker? I have installed and registered for it just now while watching your video and I cant understand anything, what are images, where the terminal is. I am navigating now so lets see how it goes. I'd appreciate if you could make a video explaining what docker is and whats its use, how to run it and stuff At present, I am just MASSIVELY overwhelmed and its making me question why i even took an interest to coding so yea, thats my opinion, hope I could help.
