What to pack for a Drakensberg hike | DGT
This is what I've packed for a 5 to 6-day Drakensberg Grand Traverse. We wanted to pack as lightly as possible, so we didn't bring a tent or other comfort items. Purely the necessities 😭

Переглядів 177Місяць тому
We spent the weekend hiking in the Drakensberg again-the third time this November, if you count the Free State Berg. This time, we were in Didima, Cathedral Peak area, and we went up Camel Pass, which is absolutely stunning. We tagged Didima Buttress and Didima Dome. I have fallen in love with Didima Dome. It is a very impressive peak, and you can see it from miles away. The day ended with us l...

The final hike of our hiking weekend in Botswana. It was a fantastic weekend away, the mountains aren't high but interesting. Made for a wonderful weekend of exploration, we found out that Monalanong Hill is Botswana's highest peak and not Otse Hill as previously believed. 🇧🇼This is part 3, Monalanong Hill. Saturday, 5am left Jhb to do some hiking in Botswana 🇧🇼. Well done! However, how did you know that the beauty of the flowers or dragon lizard were not spirits luring you? 😂😂😂
Bold of you to assume I made it off the mountain 🐉
My friends and I are doing the Drakensberg in March and May. Definitely taking a tent though! Been training for it since early December. Would love to see what you pack for food!
All the best with your training - let me know how it goes, I'm keen to hear! 😊 which berg hikes are you doing? Here's a link to the DGT food video ua-cam.com/video/3LoVxomPNHs/v-deo.html I have many more food videos if you need inspiration. And Drakensberg videos ua-cam.com/play/PL0zkf-tTqJptnXq90o1Nq4NpJbYDPZWLv.html
you can save some more weight by removing allthe bags and use supermarket zipp lock bags on the items you really want to keep dry that also helps to pack your bagpack more even
That is a good idea. I'm not sure I'd trust a ziplock bag with my sleeping bag tho, for that I'll stick to the drybag. Another way to save weight is to just have everything in 1 or 2 big drybags/ plastic bags.
Isabella and Gabriel will be very pleased to know that they debuted on your special vlog. I will inform them of this.
🥰🥰🥰 They are forever in my heart, and on my mind ❤️
Funny your video has just come across my feed. My friends and I are currently discussing traveling doing this! Very interesting video.
I hope the video serves you well. All the best with your upcoming adventure ✨️
I'm sure on those ridges you appreciated that 1kg less 😛
Every second 🤣🤣
Loved this video,so cool identifying all the Flowers-
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun 🌻🌷🪻⚘️
Totally inspired lady, been hiking for a while and collecting videos to create something like this and this just gave me joy…feeling so inspired
So happy to hear this, thank you 😊 I look forward to seeing what you create 🩷
Definitely in my sights. Looks stunning. 🎯
You’re in for a treat!
Worst pass? Mbundini was the most unfulfilling pass for sure. A lot of hard work and no special rewarding views (unlike Fangs or Madonna).
I'll add it to the nogo list. Definitely need special rewards for hard climbs. I've heard amazing things abt Fangs pass, haven't done it yet, or Madonna.
@AfricanHiker Up Ifidi, down Icidi is hard work, but an amazing loop. Really needs 4 days.
Let us know after if you starved or not
😂😂 I didn't starve but I certainly could have eaten more on the last day.
So cool to see Jonathan's pics on FB and then see you here on YT. Love how Jonathan talks about Khulus which was a concept conceived between a friend and I while falling asleep in Roland's Cave...
Wow, you're the father of the Khulus 🤩
Awesome video. I take Creatine as a supplement. It's great for strength, stamina, and recovery. One teaspoon a day. Good luck with the hike. We are with you in spirit. Whenever you upload a new video, it takes preference over anything else.
Thank you! I'll look into creatine. You are so kind 🫶🏿 much appreciated
Looks like so much fun. You will have to find the people who get there before you, and put all those mounds of rocks there.
It was lots of fun 😂 Botswana surprised me.
Result : 220km in 5days 10hrs 20 mins. Awesome and all the best for 2025. ❤
*226km to be exact 🥵 Thank you 😊 all the best to you too ❤️
Those last 6km were the worst 😫
Those olives were the MVP.
absolutely👌🏾
This is very helpful.... As I go off to unpack my bag! 🤣🤣 Again!!!!
It's a process, forever packing n unpacking 😅 after filming this, I added chocolate cake for Christmas n took out some other food. Enjoy the Amatola 🥾
@AfricanHiker cake! 🤣🤣 Don't give me ideas... Thank you friend ❤️
Best thing ever. Woolworths has them in what looks like a yoghurt container, absolutely perfect. It doesn't get squashed or anything and it's delicious. Plus you can reseal it so I ate half on Christmas n half the next day. I'll def be hiking with that again.
So glad you are off on that adventure.
Thanks 😃 It's been on my mind for a while now.
Another great video.
Thank you 😊
Nice
Thanks! 🥾
Such awesome views. When I grow up I will join you guys. Were you not afraid when you lost the trail ?
Grow up quick, the views are worth it 👌🏾 I wasn't scared when we lost the trail, I was just tired of looking for the trail in the dark, it was futile. What did scare me was the talk abt being attacked in the middle of the night 🫣
Well done. Incredible views ❤❤... I was breathing with you all the way to Didima 😂😂😂😂... Loved the end with all the flowers gorgeous
😂😂😂😂 glad I could make you feel the climb with me! The flowers are amazing aren't they? 😻
@AfricanHiker absolutely. And your nails 🤩🤩🤩💅🏿💅🏿💅🏿...
And thank you!!!! 💚🫀🫶🏿⛰️
Great video. That's a brave hike. I'm used to being guided. I like your hiking trousers.
Thank you ☺️ it was an unexpected twist to the hike. Thanks, I enjoy hiking in them, they have a mens version in blue 💙 if you wanna match 😂 but these pants are almost 3yrs old now.
I want to come to the mount and visit Zim. Do you still climb? Does it still make people disappear??
You are welcome to do so. I climbed it, it was pleasant hike and the views are amazing. They make you go up with a guide so you will make it back safe n sound.
That video gave me serious vertigo! LOL
Same, it's a pretty exposed spot but it feels worse in the video.
Omg... I'm busy moving my phone so you are off the edge 😂😂😂😂... Well done, those views ❤❤❤❤
🤣🤣🤣 saving my virtual life Thanks ❤️❤️❤️ breathtaking views as usual 👌🏾⛰️ the berg is so beautiful.
Wow. Anita is back in the Drakensberg. I'm heading there in April and also can't wait to walk the Congo-Nile Trail in Rwanda.
And I'll be going again ⛰ You're doing the Congo-Nile Trail🙀 that is AWESOME, thats a fantastic trail. I haven't done it but drove along parts of it while in Rwanda. When are you going?
Quite some view of the landscape from the cave (awe inspiring)
It's spectacular, perhaps the best view from a cave in the Berg.
Me: don't lean on the cliff. Also me: camera goes sharply off at an angle at that spot.
Do as I say, not as I do 😂😂
Splendid editing - all the best. I enjoy your videos.
Thank you 😊 glad you are enjoying them 🥾
Awesome hike! Love the content!
Glad you enjoyed it, I loved the views, especially down twins pass!
wie verrückt ist den das ;-)
Ganz geil
Not bad, that’s nice country! Keep it steady and yer channel will grow 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, we are spoilt with beauty here in South Africa. Thank you 😊
Correction: the Nguza River we crossed on Friday is not the same as the Nguza River we saw on Saturday. Friday's one is in SA n Saturday's is in Lesotho and flows in the opposite direction.
It was a great hike!
It was 😁 looking forward to Didima 🥾
Awesome video. I hope to do the Mnweni trek next year. Keep the videos coming. Your content is gold to us here in South Africa. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Tim. You're gonna love the Mnweni trek 💚 Holidays are coming so I'll have more time to edit. Keep well ⛰️
The Mnweni loop is awesome, highly recommended!
@@timfromdurban Mnweni loop is the best intro to the Mnweni area. Please do it over 4 days and don't be talked into 3 days, unless you are super fit. Go up Mnweni pass, and come down Rockeries.
Murikunongedzera wani netugunwe twenyu haa monyepa shiti
Take it with a pinch of salt 🤷🏾♀️
😂😂😂😂😂
❤❤... Watching this on a Friday while at work is a bad idea , now my mind is there already.😅😅 Beautiful content ❤❤
Friday is basically the weekend, at least mentally 🙃 😅 thank you ❤️❤️
Interesting one!
It is, right?! 😊
How experienced does one have to be to this , 5 peaks in one day?
The hike without tagging the peaks is moderate, the peaks make it more challenging, but it is easy enough as the peaks aren't much of a detour. You do have to have some experience hiking in the Drakensberg, all the peaks are above 3000m and performance can be affected negatively coz of the altitude. Another thing is that you will need to know how to navigate, there are no trails, no markers, nothing. Complete wilderness 💚
I did this hike with mountain club South Africa (mcsa), the leaders are very experienced n they tend to offer unique hikes. I would suggest you also do this typa stuff with a club or highly experienced group.
I am back here again :-). Thanks Anita
Hi welcome back 😀 happy to help.
Beautiful video.well done
Thank you
Thought you are not supposed to comment
🫣😬
Nicely done Anita! 👏I enjoyed watching. I haven't done this one yet. It's on my todo list 🙂
Thanks! You're going to love it, it's a great trail. 😊
Loved watching this and reliving our experience on this hike! We had the most amazing weather as well, not to hot not to cold. Although day 3 is the longest, day 2 seemed the worst with labyrinth hill knocking some (due to being able to see camp but then realising you had another hill to climb to get there! Also the shale doing downhill was torture!). Do agree with you on day 4 and the "false" peaks. I think for us day 3 was the best. Being away from technology was so good to, being forced to just focus on your surroundings and enjoy each others company over being stuck on phones or tablets. What an amazing hike, would love to do this again sometime!
Day 3 was also my favourite, and I agree on how much better it is to be disconnected and just enjoy the moment. Glad you enjoyed the video, happy hiking 😊
You are living my dreams girl.keep hiking and exploring.
You must join me, we can explore together ❤️
Absolutely beautiful.... ❤❤
❤️❤️ it is, isn't it? Stunning trail 🐆 Thank you 😊
Gosh, you make me want to be there ❤ the views are beautiful.
I hope you get to hike it one day 😊 it's really like a walking into a picture.
Take me with next time, this is a wonderful chilled hike.
It was so fun simply looking at flowers, learning n enjoying. Def gotta do another wildflower hike, I'll keep you posted.
Beautiful content my friend, you created enjoyable and atmospheric episode here!
Thank you 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed it.
