Turku Night Challenge 19.12.2024
Last TNC for the this year. Problematic start again; forget to turn on the lamp, fell quite badly just before no 1, very confused to no 2, hadn't read to no 3 so had to stop and took the slower alternative... but from no 5 forward happy with the map reading and most route choices. Physically tired towards the end. Happy to finish 11.

Turku sprint training afternoon 14.12.2024

Afternoon sprint training organized by Turun Suunnistajat. Felt well rested after the sprints in the morning, but was terrible to control no 1. Concentrated only on the route choices to no 2. Decided that I wanted to try going straight through the forrest to no 2 as I had run a similar leg during WMOC in August then taking left choice with stairs. Probably not the best choice to go straight, bu...

Nice 3 step sprint training organized by Turun Suunistajat. KO-type training with short sprints. Difficult again to read the dark green (forbidden) areas from the map even with a head lamp. Maybe with 1:4000 scale makes it more difficult. Thanks to Tus for the nice arrangements! #hero8black #orienteering #suunnistus #sprintorienteering

Solid run, only minor time losses. Wasn't able to see from the map that it was possible to take the building on the left side to no 10 and lost some time and positions. Happy that I was able to take several positions in the forest part until the end by keeping the same speed. Thanks to the organizers again, Jatkuva Liike! Also called 'the most important competition of the year', PIF pika, was held in Skräbböle, Parainen. 1 mile with many controls, this time on 1:3000/2m. Surprisingly fastest to control 1, even if I took it slow and easy. Biggest mistake at control 5 where I new I had the opening on the right, but thought a saw the big path in front of me going down to the control (was actually the small path) an...

Unsure to control 1 as usual, took a slower route choice. The rest of the course went rather well, some smaller mistakes only. Should be disqualified around control 7, was not able to understand the map due to lots of snow, so took a too narrow turn into the control and slightly wrong direction out from the control. Unfortunately the battery died just before control 16, but added the rest of th...

Back to the WMOC sprint qualification area. This time I decided to avoid disqualification :-) Had problems getting up to speed in the beginning, both running and orienteering didn't work smoothly (as can be seen from the split times). The first 7 controls weren't performed smoothly and the route choice to no 6 was not optimal. After that I found the right pace. Tried early to find the best rout...

Thursday Night Challenge in Turku. Slightly longer this time, 4,2km. Some not so optimal route choices, lost valuable seconds, but first clear mistake to 16 where I missed the opening in the fence. Then totally forgot to take control 19, so ended up disqualified. Interesting that some other ones made the same mistake! First Turku Night Challenge this autumn. This time im Memoriam of Pasi Ikonen close to his home in Kakola. Running felt ok, but even with such an easy course I managed to make some mistakes. No major mistakes in the beginning, and comparing with the others I took the right route choices to for instance no 5 and 14. The problems came between 15 to 18, 16 would probably been faster left and didn'...

Really nice indoor orienteering in IKEA Vantaa. Went overall very well. Had problems in the beginning to 'get into the map'. Biggest mistake to no 6, didn't realize how extremely short the distance between the controls was :-) Smaller mistakes also to 11 and 18. Otherwise some route choices that maybe could have been better (like 16) and some minor micro route choices. It was not allowed to run...

GANT-rastit by Rastipiikkiö. Forrest sprint with many controls. Scale 1:5000 was slightly challenging, especially in the more forest parts. To the third control I didn't observe the forbidden area marks on the road so went straight over the area. Had some difficulties understanding the map as it was rather simplified. Unsure to 10 and many turns to 11. After only minor mistakes, the big one cam...

Tried the night orienteering at Peimarin Rastit. Lot's of controls and difficult points. At control 5, I was unsure of my location before the control and wasted some time. I think the control was at the wrong cliff, or, what do you think? Nice to be able to somehow run the race after leg problems and nearly 2 weeks of flu. Went out slowly but that didn't help, made small mistakes on both 1st and 2nd controls. Then only a 30sec mistake on control 7, that was totally unnecessary, followed the other runners and thought I saw the big rock up the hill, but I had actually passed it already. Thank you, we have really enjoyed watching the Night Challenges. Did we miss one from 12th December, your name was in the results! Again, thank you very much for posting 😊
@@UrbanOrienteering hey, great that you liked them!😊 Will continue right after New Year. I think the 12th there is a similar event, then a indoor event on the 19th. I had the 'bigger head lamp' this time, because I think it's diffucult to see anything on the videos😅 I was participating on the 12th as well, but didn't take the camera as I thought nearly nobody was watching anyway!! But now I know that at least you guys are watching, so will try to take it with me from now on!👍 Big thanks!
@petter444petter Excellent! We really enjoy watching Orienteering videos (especially Sprint / Urban) so it's great when we find someone who uploads good quality video. We have caught up with all your Turku Night Challenges from 2022 & 2023, we especially like the snow as we get very little, if any, where we are! THANKS 👍

About the fifth you're right, it's on the wrong cliff. ...actually it's on the cliff I intended it to be. I was sloppy while drawing the course - didn't make sure the placing of the circle was correct.

@@UrbanOrienteering Thanks!😊
Nice to see the M55 track. I also run this category and will probably run the WMOC in Spain next year. I have 3 questions about the video: 1) What kind of camera do you use? 2) How do you make sure that the video is so stable and doesn't shake? Do you do it with post-production? 3) What tools do you use to create the map with the GPS track and then bring the map and the video together?
Hi, I use an old GoPro Hero8, but I'm thinking of upgrading, as the battery life span is so short with this camera. I'm happy you find it stable, because I had to reduce the stability as that also reduces battery life span. To answer your question, the camera takes care of the stability, you don't have to do anything yourself. The answer to your third question is longer, but in short; you need to scan the map, get a gpx-file from your sport watch, the video in mp4 from the GoPro. The you use a program called QuickRoute to get the gpx on the map. I use Avidemux (as it's fast, but there are several alternatives) to combine the GoPro-videos to one (they come in several pieces). For combining the video and the map (with route) you use a program called OrientView. I additionally use a program CapCut to add some text afterwards. The whole process is described quite detailed in a video by a guy whom I can't remember, but I will try to find the video for you...
Good video but unfortunately stutters at 30 fps. We always recommend 60 fps.
Yes, but isn't 60fps eating the battery faster?
"we"? sounds like you are someone that may be able to help me...ide like to know the programs you use to compile the gopro clips, and also what you use to generate the map track. I have had several issues lately trying to make my first headcam video...thanks.
@@petter444petter I dont know about battery life, but it will take up more memory space. How much runtime do you get with your 8? Ukrainian guy uses a 5000mah battery pack for his....I have a 10 and got about 1 h35m I think once on a single battery...on a 2 hour event...😪🤬
personally I think the video looks pretty good...except for the raindrops on the lens, which can be lessened by using clear car wax...
Hi John, with the 8 I get maybe over an hour if I use 'poor settings', otherwise maybe 30-40 min...
Great qualification, well done 👍

Great route choice :) especially for the ones you mentioned
Thanks! 😊
Mmmm...pizza...yeah maybe if you really feel the desire to carbo-load...have beers instead...
Good idea, but even better would be to have both the pizza and the beer but AFTER the race!😂
Geniales videos amigos,, como sugerencia,, podrías añadir la descripcion de controles en el video, en una esquina por ejemplo. Para que podamos ver que vas a ir a buscar y donde se encuentra, arriba, abajo, al lado, etcétera. Un saludo.
Thanks! Good idea, will try to do that next time.👍
I use a +1.25 corrective lens in my left eye for reading the map. Quite common here to do so among orienteerers😅
I think having a wider map view which is static for each leg, instead of constantly rotating the direction you are pointing, would be much more readable for the viewers!
Agree. I will try to do that next time, especially in sprint distance!👍
Cool video! I liked that you edit those split times into video. I ran same 3rd leg as u. Couple different route choises though👍
And btw, most of us use a small handheld flashlight with multiple settings to view map on low, and focus higher spot for control locations.
Nobody uses handheld lights here, only on head strap.😊
Wow! a 13km single leg? Interesting note about contact lens. Are you saying that use magnifying lens vs a prescription? I wear corrective ones, but I wonder if I can get my optometrist to give me one or both a single power higher for orienteering? I have mine set up for distance so I can see my drones farther away. I have struggled for awhile seeing the map, and had never thought about it.
Thanks Petter, My eldest boy ran leg 2 for SHOC from Australia good to see what it was like on the track.
Thanks. Nice that he came all the way over here to participate! Seems that he run rather ok, hope he was satisfied with his race. Would love to come to Australia for some orienteering one day👍
@@petter444petter Luckily He is in Sweden for a gap year so wasnt to far for him and he could hitch a ride with the Orion club Who he has been running with. He was very happy up to about 10km then made about 10mins of poor route selection, But rates this as one of is best experiences so far. EYOC next week and then O ringen still to come. It will be a busy summer. Already planning 2025 so you might see a few more Aussies next year. reach out if you do come to Australia it is a small but friendly Orienteering community.
@@petter444petter Luckily he only came from Sweden where he is having a gap year . He hitched a ride with the Orion club who he has also been running with so he probably had the easiest trip in the team. Hola amigo! Que programa usas para hacer los videos? Y que cámara? Gracias
Hola! Que programa y camara usas para hacer los videos? Tienes un tutorial?
Hola! I use a GoPro8, but I guess anyone with stabilization will do. You use the gpx-file from your sport watch with a jpg of the map with a program called QuickRoute for adjusting the gpx on the map. For adding the route+map with the video you use the program Orientview. And for combining the GoPro videos and the final video you can for instance use Avidemux. Have a look at this video, more or less like I'm doing: ua-cam.com/video/I02rwyIb1pk/v-deo.htmlsi=teXAyrdMBUjCm8ol
Hola amigo, que camara usas y como creas video con el mapa? Puedes explicarme?
Thanks for sharing. At 11:00 very interesting. 2 classes American cars...a studebaker and a 1970 Plymouth fury convertible. That town doesn’t look very posh, but that car is rare even over here. Looking at the map as you pass it, the yard it’s near looks to be larger than most of the other properties. Speaking of which, going from 9 to 10 the brownish green areas which I’m guessing is housing , is not marked as off limits. Not possible to go across that?
That should have said “classic” , but I cannot edit comments on my iPad.
I actually didn't realize the cars at all while running, good concentration! Only afterwards, didn't know they were that rare. I wouldn't say it's a posh area, but nice and quite close to Tampere city. Maybe put everything on cars😅 The green brownish color is 'area that shall not be entered' (IOF rules), so mostly around houses and such. To my opinion used too often, where 'forbidden red color' could be used instead, but I've understood that the green is clearer, but I think it's sometimes hard to see when running exactly the borderlines of the green.
A real shame that you didn't use the GoPro for the Finals, the terrain and courses looked really good!
Yes, agree, the terrain in the finals was much better and more challenging than in the qualifications. Chose not to use the camera as it adds some weight and as I knew we had a chance to compete for the medals...
@@petter444petter I tried a head cam recently and hope to be able to figure out how to integrate it and upload my run, but I found that I was distracted by it some, and it cost me several minutes when I missed a control. And then when I went for it, I missed another one because my planned route was now out of order...that cost me 7 minutes 😳🤬 after I got back to the finish and went back out for it. It was a score O so no penalty as they can be collected in any order.
You get used to the camera! When I didn't use the camera in the finals it felt strange as I nearly always use it otherwise. Looking forward to your first video, hope you get it uploaded soon. Remember that viewers, at least me, tend to like when you make mistakes, as they are good learning points, so don't worry about making some extra minutes😅
@@johnrobertson7583I use to use a GoPro many minds ago but just for out of the habit! It definately takes a few runs before you become confident enough to run with it and not to worry about it. After a while you totally forget it's there!!
❤a great area for a sprint and very well planned. 14:25
Yes, agree, som really nice challenges!👍
Tack för facit!😎
Varsågod🤣
I wouldnt call that an error at 7...I think going thru the dense tree patch early was a wise choice vs trying to figure out where to pass thru on the East side to find the control
Actually you are right, comment more based on that I lost suprisingly much to the others going from 6 to 7, but I performed it according to plan, which was crossing the green preferrably early than late.
Nice run. I just made my first cam video, and would like to know how to overlay my track video into the run video like you do. What resource did you use to learn how to do that? Thanks.
I'm no expert at that, but there is a guy that explains that in a video, will try to find it. I'm using a program called QuickRoute to get the gpx-file on the map and Orientview to get the route and map together.
I think it was this video: ua-cam.com/video/I02rwyIb1pk/v-deo.htmlsi=DOpgERaHhQRb6WpH
Pretty good run. Always surprised at videos with the hero8 looking smooth. Just got a 10 today, so will be playing with head cam videos soon. How long does the 8 run on a single battery?
Thanks. The time varies with outdoor temperature, video quality etc etc, but roughly 45 min. For this video I bought a new battery as the older batteries were weakend.
Härlig terräng och fin orientering - gillar den öppna skogen och berghällarna!!
Jo fantastiskt fint där!👍
Nice Terrain
Yes, indeed, very nice!
Kiitos.
Kiitos! Menin tosi rauhallisesti ykköseen ja en muista edes ajatelleeni käyriä vaan tarkalla suunnalla ja yritin havainnoida kivet ennen rastia. Mutta kyllähän toi käyrä kummallisen lähellä rastikiveä on laitettu.
4 minutes in...a little camera mount slippage? LOL...at # 3...why not just hop the handrail to the control?
😂yes, luckily I noticed, otherwise I would have filmed my shoes all the way. You are not allowed to jump over the handrail at #3. Everything marked with a thick black line are not allowed to cross over...😅
The dark green areas cannot be used, they are mostly private yards . So 9 to 10 you could either go around to the left or to the right. As you might have seen the yards that are non-green are mostly schools, offices, high-rise buildings etc where the organizers have got permission for us to cross. Where I could gave taken a more straight forward choice was from 6 to 7, but it looked so snowy so I decided to run right. It was actually not so chilly, but very slippery. Would be very diffucult to run without studded shoes (don't know if that's the correct word).😂
