Can an apparently simple symbol like a cross or a spiral really speak to our subconscious and activate something within us that’s important for our knowledge, protection or growth? Can what appears to be a two dimensional and static design actually be multidimensional and dynamic? And where does the idea of what is masculine and feminine fit in with all of this, especially relating to the Yin and Yang symbol, or taijitu? Illustrious thinkers such as Carl Jung, Claude Levi Strauss and Joseph Campbell have much to say about the power of symbols. Yet, only this week, I had what I think is my first conscious experience of a symbol that I had seen just as a picture on a wall activating something quite profound within me. It got me thinking about the Yin and Yang symbol and its representation of polarities - or maybe, if it really becomes active, not being so clear in separating black and white after all. In this video I talk about my experience and where it's leading me in my thinking about the real power that symbols can have when we allow them to, something our ancestors and many indigenous peoples seem to have long known.
