My Visit to the More Dinosaurs House
Like most dinosaur fans, my love for these creatures stems from my childhood, and I would watch any dinosaur movie or documentary I could get my hands on. One video my local library hand was More Dinosaurs - a 30-minute documentary from 1985 hosted by the late radio DJ and actor Gary Owens, as well as his friend Eric Boardman. One of my favorite things about the special was Gary’s house - which was decorated with all kinds of dinosaur memorabilia. The specials started to become forgotten going into the late 90s and 2000s, but a resurgence of nostalgic interest in these dino specials came about by the start of the 2010s, with the specials being rereleased in sets on DVD. I came across an interview with both Owens and Boardman, and Gary revealed that the house in More Dinosaurs was real, but that it actually wasn’t his home. The real owner of the house we fans of the specials call the “More Dinosaurs” house was and still is Donald F. Glut, a science fiction writer, independent filmmaker, dinosaur scholar, and musician.
In late 2023 I took a short trip to Los Angeles, and I had the privilege of making a pit stop at Don's house to see his collection in person and learn a little more about some of his most prized possessions. Almost 40 years since More Dinosaurs was shot, Don’s collection has quadrupled, so much to the point that I could spend an entire day observing his many treasures in person. He has many toys, ceramics, fossil casts, and even some artifacts of historic significance, including animatronics from the 1933 Chicago Worlds Fair, original artwork by Charles R Knight, former museum creature models, his own backyard dinosaur park, and what might be the very first American painting of dinosaurs from the early 1800s.
I honestly never thought this childhood dream of mine would come true. Thanks a ton, Don!

September 24th 2016 marks the 80th Anniversary of the birth of a gentle genius who dreamed of making a difference in the world. In the end, he did with a little help from his imagination, many other wonderful artists, and lots and lots of puppets. Featuring the song Ordinary Miracle by Sarah McLachlan. The song perfectly fits the lifestyle that Jim Henson lead.

As fun as that tour would be, I remember his website and I'm not certain I'd pass the women's dress code haha. Really neat to see all of this stuff in video.

The man, the myth, the legend! It's awesome that he is so friendly and open with his treasures, hearing that antique Pterosaur screach (creak) is an experience i will cherish. I'm not familiar with that 80s Dinosaur feature but the Dinobot episodes of Transformers definitely helped foster my love of Pæleontology as a kid in the 80s. I know Don Glut had a fairly nonchalant approach to his writing involvement those Animated works but his passion for Dinosaurs does embue those mundane scripts with a sense of magic. I also have some experience with classic Dino art exhibition. When i was a kid in 1991 my family took a trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park in North Texas, wherein was domain of the old Sinclair Dinosaur statues from the Worlds Fair. Feasting my eyes upon those historic marvels was quite a wonderful experience, as was walking in the footsteps of the mighty Acrocanthosaurus from the early Cretaceous trackways of the prehistoric Texas coast! However, it soon got even better... because in the next town was a traveling Animatronic Dinosaur Exhibit called 'Dinosaurs Alive' ! We walked along a path in a large, dark, auditorium filled with jungle decorations with an outdoor aesthetic. Walking along the periphery of foam rubber terrain and plastic trees i marvelled at the moving, life-like, Dinosaurs as sound effects of screeching and roaring reverberated around the dimly lit room. Unfortunately, but logically, the centralized display zone was cordoned-off by a horizontal velvet rope draped around the concrete floor walkway. Never-the-less that did not hinder me from reaching-out and petting an Appatosaurus hehe. That two-for-one trip was trully one of my greatest Pæleo experiences and best of all... my dad had the presence of mind to borrow a Camcorder from my aunt, and i still have that VHS tape to this day! ❤️
