JVC is not softer here, but rather the Sony is oversharpening. Sony only made low-end consumer VCRs, and the contrast and sharpness knob was turned to 11. The JVC colors are more accurate, and the values more legal (like the white sign at 0:31). You should almost never use JVC calibration, it generally makes matter worse.

The Sony is over sharpened and is blowing out all the highlights. The color and dynamic are much better on the JVC. You may want to go into the menu and turn TAPE DUB MODE to ON, or shut off Video Calibration to see if you can squeeze more detail out of the JVC.

Should set the JVC to Edit mode. That removes a lot of the processing. The Sony is better overall in this video.

Rather ironic that WNBC's Chuck Scarborough both outlasted and outlived Mr. Vance in the latter's WRC run.

I have always wanted to see a WRC-TV sign-off...especially voiced by the great Mac McGarry (RIP). And I must say, WRC's sister station, WNBC New York is rather weak when it comes to sign-offs, as it's just slides followed by the US Army National Anthem film. 'RC goes a step above with a video postcard of the Nation's Capitol. And then...the old school WRC-TV test pattern...well that just wraps it up nicely.

I thought NBC News had renamed "Capsule" to "Digest" by this point but it must have come later in 1983.

I remember these well. Mom recorded them with the Charlie Brown specials onto a VHS tape for us to watch over and over again. Pretty sure I still have the tape somewhere, but no VCR to play it on. Good thing there's UA-cam now.

I bought one about 3 years ago, they actually do work really well. A part of the spit rod assembly broke on mine but I was able to get someone locally to weld it back together for me. My fault for putting too big a turkey on it. 😳
