Here's why I'm switching to raised beds for all my squash plants.

I grew my gem squash in a raised bed this season, and here's how it turned out. On a side note, I ran out of soil, so I couldn't fill the top level of the bed, but it worked out well with the gem squash having to climb over the edge.

Non-commercial bug sprays are better for the bugs that are good for a garden like bees and butterflies, lady bugs and preying manits.
How does this come out at the middle and end?
Looked like not using a trellis and letting the squash wander might have lowered the risk of powdery mildew. Is that possible?
WOW! Your soil is so soft! I have clay and have a long way to go to get fluffy soil. Thank you for your encouragement. I love the simplicity of your style.
Yusses bro
I almost shat myself when I broke one of those and looked set like a roach.
You were supposed to tell us how to grow the plant. But all you did was yap, yap, yap. You should have shown the step-by-step from seed to planting in a pot, how deep, how much water etc. etc. etc.
Thanks bud. I'll make an effort to make videos like that. I appreciate the "blunt" feedback. It's a great suggestion. :)
Looks like a tomato plant
I collected seeds from wild plants and I am enjoying gooseberries planted in pots. Now I have the inca berry I got from highlands. The seeds are germinating!
Thank you so much this is very helpful ❤
My pleasure. Good luck 👍🏻
Nice! Im trying to have a garden again with more plants. Once winter is over.
A panty hose will do just fine as well.
What size pot are you using to grow your cape gooseberry?
I normally use pots 400mm high and 500mm wide but I'm not really sure if that's optimal as I just picked them pretty randomly.
Hi there fellow SA YTuber...do you go visit other channels or just post?
Hi. I do both.
I live in the Northern Cape. Do you think they will grow here?
I honestly don't know as I haven't planted there but it's definitely worth giving it a try. I believe the climate is quite dry so you may just need to water more frequently than I do here in Gauteng.
I just threw a whole bunch of butternut seeds into the compost area in the garden....waiting.....
Awesome. Good luck!
Those squash are looking great!! 🔥
Thanks!
I ordered a starter plant. It grew but became very leggy. I am still working on it by using cuttings. Should I give up wuth this one and try again. Also, I am trying to grow it indoors.
Hi June, I wouldn't give up on it just yet but it can't hurt to plant another one and see what happens. I did once have a Gooseberry plant that died, which made me feel despondent but I realised later that it was just bad luck. Does it get a lot of sun? Which area do you live in?
Hi June, I thought I'd show you my plants so you can see how they look in different states. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/Pkx34wDO4Go/v-deo.html
Good .
Good tip. Cut off as needed. I can see some good weeds there!! 😵😎
Thanks. Some days I have more weeds than veggies. 😀
Great little tomato pot!! Well done.
Thanks!
Hi never been successful with these babies. I tried the paint brush /hand pollination, even tried your method.... Recently heard to try a feather??? May try a few seeds again, but these plants can take over!!! and all that powdery mildew!!! Well done, keep it up!!! 😎😎
The powdery mildew can drive me nuts. Worth it though. Feather is an interesting idea. Worth a try.
Howzit fellow South African!!! Amazed to find you. Have these little darlings in the compost. Chickens love them too 🐥
Howzit! Thanks. Thats interesting. Now I just need to persuade my wife to let me get chickens!
*I only discovered your channel this year, JON'S VEGGIE GARDEN DIARY, but it is by far one of the best gardening channels out there! I have definitely rekindled my flame for a return to the ground, please don't stop gardening, keep up the content, bravooo, GO GO GO GOOOOOO*

I collected all the green rose chafer grubs grom my pottef plants and threw them in my compost. Everything grown on that compost grew very well.
That's awesome 👌
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Panties clean now?
I had to wash them twice but they are now. 😀
Can't believe that you put it in there. You need to listen to the little expert.
It's crazy but I often find them in there near the bottom, in the section that's composted. I would have thought that the heat would kill them. Although now that I think about it, its normally the adults I find in there. Hope I didn't cook this one alive.
I have found that once the peel gers thick enough the flies cannot sting them. Maybe remove one or two bags from larger butternuts to test.
Hi Hein, I definitely agree with you. Sometimes I have to remove the bags as the butternuts outgrow them. The chances of being stung do seem to be less when they're big and when they do get stung, it seems to cause less damage.
Great idea, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video. How many females can one male pollinate?
It's a pleasure. That's a very interesting question. I have only ever used one male for one female flower as I usually get far more male flowers than female. In theory though, I would imagine that one male could pollinate many females as natural pollinators like bees only carry a little at a time. It's worth testing.
@@jonsveggiegardendiary5691 thank you I shall consider
Thankyou this has been very helpful, couldn’t understand why I had so many flowers that fell off without fruiting! I think all the flowers that have opened and fallen off the plant have been males as they didn’t have the swelling underneath as you’ve shown here. I did notice a bee or two, not often though, buzzing around in them but obviously the plant hasn’t yet had female flowers so no pollination. Now I know what to look for I will hopefully distinguish the flowers properly to help it along with hand pollination. I don’t have a clue what squash is growing as it seeded itself from the compost! Again very grateful to you for showing the difference and how to pollinate these flowers....x
I'm so glad I could help. Thanks for the feedback. It can be such a frustrating issue. Good luck with your mystery squash!
Hi Jon, what's a organza bag made of, looks like a really fine mesh.
It's a thin nylon weave fabric. I've seen them at a lot of gift shops. I've bought them from the party place in Woodmead and Bruma oriental city and I think crazy store sell them. The only challenge is finding big enough ones. I sometimes have to cut them off the butternut once they get to a certain size.
@@jonsveggiegardendiary5691 iesh ok thank you ... we don't have those shops in Zim, but I'll make a plan ... basically something that will allow air to move but stop the fly getting to the nut ... copy thank you
Just an update on this video. The experiment, unfortunately, didn't work so I'll have to try another method of growing these berries.
