264 - Could changes in pesticide hazard to bees be detected across a state?
Bees are exposed to pesticide hazards in a variety of ways. Estimating how hazards to bees are changing over time, across an area as large as a state, is a daunting prospect. This week we hear about an attempt to estimate changes in hazards in a new paper by Dr. Emily Carlson, a recent PhD student from Oregon State University.

263 - National Pollen Phenology Wheel
Переглядів 721 день тому
Beekeepers often have a sense of periods of intense nectar flows, but it is a lot more difficult to assess pollen flows. In this episode we talk with Priya Chakrabarti Basu from Mississippi State University who talks about a new initiative to provide beekeepers with a better sense of the pollen flows of their region.

Butterfly bush is a hardy shrub that pollinators love. But under certain situations it can become invasive, which has led to laws to limit the sale to sterile varieties and interspecific hybrids. But there is a question of whether the hybrids are really sterile and whether sterility impacts the benefits to bees. We get answers to these questions this week with Cara Stills, from the Ornamental P...

While roughly 70% of bee species are ground nesting, we know very little about the nesting biology of anything more than a handful of species. In this episode we hear from Dr. Jordan Kueneman and his project GNBees to generate more data from the public. Dr. Jordan Kueneman is a research scientist and director of Project GNBee, a community science project dedicated to research and conservation o...

thank you for this podcast on YT :)
I have heard -- I've not seen a citation on it -- but I've heard people say that the more native Nemophila menziesii to the Willamette Valley is Nemophila menziesii var atomaria, which is an all white variety that only has a bit of blue on the veins one the back of the flower. I'm not sure if there are differences in terms of clay soil tolerance but I've grown a few of these this year and they've done fine and I have crazy clay. I got the seed from Steel Acres, it came from Benton County I believe.
Do you know I am a regular viewer of your UA-cam channel, I have watched many of your videos and your content quality is good. Your channel has great content but it's not reaching its full potential due to SEO issues focusing on your SEO will help you build a large fanbase. Thanks for the great content
how can we contact dr Kirsten Traynor
thank you
Found this video on Oregon desert bees found in the shrub steppe ua-cam.com/video/MaxDBhFDmbc/v-deo.htmlsi=xhoBh-VSKuil_p7z
Excellent podcast. Thank you Ron, for your invaluable knowledge, experience and advice.
I don't get it you want to save the bees but so many Atlas volunteers are killing them it doesn't make sense to me

Thank you for this presentation.
Great presentation. Chockful of great information. Nice to have such a block design setting for the statistics. Makes the biostatistician in me happy! I also learned a lot from Dr DeBano's talk at the Oregon Bee Atlas conference. What a dataset! Talented and focused team of people you work with.
Hey Olivia it’s Travis your old childhood neighbor 😄
What kinds of Ericameria can we plant in Oregon for pollinators?
Got 2 Bubble Bee nests in my yard this year, one in the ground and one in an empty bird house here on Vancouver island. My garden should be great this year😎
Awesome talk!
brother this is amazing but please upgrade your microphone. well done overall though!
Terry's talk starts at this time stamp 6:00
I love Ceanothus but what is this music people. It sounds like the Casino Night theme from Sonic II.
We didn't choose the music - the shrub did ;) But check out this great survey of ceanothus varieties in Oregon by Neil Bell: journals.ashs.org/horttech/view/journals/horttech/19/2/article-p411.xml
@@polliNationOSU Full sun, little water once established and smooth jazz w/ some synth in there :)
@@polliNationOSU That is very interesting! I had wanted to try growing Ceanothus velutinus and wondered how it would do at sea level (and if I could even get it). I guess it might not be able to deal with clay... The variety they had though I think is the one more often found east of the Cascades.
No one asked -- and maybe it's because all of your community knows it already -- but what do you think it is about vosnesenskii that makes it so successful -- esp. in urban areas? I have noticed in Portland that California poppy also is extremely prolific and I've wondered if that isn't a coincidence.
It's so great to get such an in-depth lecture like this online. Thanks! I watched the tutorial on actually collecting the bees but I'm so worried I'd hurt them by accident... Thus I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. But I'm so happy this information is available online.
Thanks for posting this. I missed it last night because of taking care of family stuff. Very informative and i got some great ideas. Cheers.
wow I thought a mole was going to pop out. 😂 awesome clip!
Absolutely fascinating and so informative - thank you.
