China has to import almost all it's fossil fuels, either from the middle east, Russia or Australia (and that's coal). Not exactly the most secure energy situation imaginable. They are smart to push electrification hard. Especially if they want to take over Taiwan and evoke the wrath of the west.

China didn’t just started since 2020 by subsidies, the original plan was since 1990s. But before it announced the plan, it guided all supply chain ready. Like BYD was made batteries for mobile phones before. Electric motor tech was used in high speed trains and other equipments, and China is building the supply chain from scratch for electric motors including the key material rare earth refining and it used in electric cars today. China adopted e-bikes around 2007 and it paved the way for EV industry as well. Then the government push electric buses for a few years and BYD made a lot of electric buses before the electric cars. The industry created a huge number of engineers. Also China did a lot of work to made electric price one of the cheapest in the world. The supply chain is like building a skyscraper and you can’t skip the base or a few levels and build the top level only.

It's important to recognize that most of the most populated nations like China and India, as well as many developed nations like Australia, Korea, Japan, and the EU DO NOT produce enough oil for their own needs. And if they want true energy independence, they need to go EV. Which is why they will, Saudia Arabia, OPEC, Russia, and the US (at this point) as major oil producing nations are currently dedicated to slowing this transition for their own gain... despite the millions of annual deaths of the resulting pollution and push for a mass exinction event via the climate crisis. I work in the Energy industry very close to key decision makers. They are already diversifying away from oil. 40% of oil demand is from transport and due to China leading the charge with EVs, that demand is dropping like a stone. There is also over-supply in the market which will get worse, OPEC will almost certainly cut production further to try to stabilise the price in the $70-80 zone for as long as possible. Anyone long oil is screwed. There is a reason Saudi Arabia is diversifying its economy.

China wasn’t heavily invested in fossil fuels because they have to import most of their oil and gas.

China took the EV world over in a bit more than 5 years but they did it by making the simple observation that sometimes you can be so conservative that you can't react very quickly to disruptors and that Western car company CEOs and manager are ICE true believers who are so conservative they have moss growing on their backs. The rest was easy.
