Making Gon (the main protagonist) fight Pitou instead of Meruem (the main antagonist) was such a good (writing-wise) decision. MC vs the main villain is what you typically expect to happen even if it doesn't really make sense. And in HxH's case, it indeed didn't. Not only Gon was nowhere near to Meruem's level, he didn't have a personal reason to go for him either, unlike Pitou. Chimera Ant Gon was no hero, he was just a boy who had lost his dear master unfairly and merely wanted to take revenge for him. Togashi is an amazing writer and I think this is one of the reasons for it. He knows how humans work, how their hearts work, and so he makes the best opponents for his characters.
