Why Season 3 Cannot Fix Netflix's Witcher
Lauren Hissrich has, for better and for worse, left her mark on the Witcher franchise. Her influence over the Netflix show and its ongoing trajectory can be felt in every facet of the production. How has her vision affected the show's interpretation of the Andrzej Sapkowski's inherently subersive work? How has her approach to adaptation affected the spirit of the books? And has she successfully brought to life this story that was meant to deconstruct the tropes Hollywood media are so fond of? (spoilers: she didn't)
This is the fifth and final part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga. Throughout, we will look at why certain decisions were made by the production team, why it may not have connected with audiences and make sense of the behind the scenes drama that has led many fans to grow increasingly frustrated at the direction the show is being taken in.

How Creative Differences Destroyed Netflix's Witcher
Переглядів 79 тис.Рік тому
Netflix's Witcher is now infamous for losing its lead actor midway through the show, as Henry Cavill's Geralt was recast with Liam Hemsworth. However, such departures from this show are the norm, not the exception, revealing an incredibly hectic production cycle that was unpleasant to all involved and resulted in the sub-par product we see today. This is the fourth part of a five part series fo...
Why the Social Commentary in Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Work
Переглядів 71 тис.Рік тому
Allegory is integral to the Witcher Saga. Every character, book and game aims to convey insight into very real world issues. Netflix's adaptation attempts to be as poignant as its source material, but ultimately lacks the empathy to go beyond its safe view of the world. This is the third part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga...
Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Understand Yennefer
Переглядів 81 тис.Рік тому
Yennefer of Vengerberg is one of the most complex characters throughout the Witcher series, in no small part due to how much of her background is left to the imagination in the books. So when the show decided to expand on her origin, it paved the way for misinterpretations and contradictions with the intent of the source material. And this has lead to a character that is to many unlikeable for ...
Netflix's Witcher Doesn't Understand Destiny

Destiny is a concept at the very heart of the Witcher saga. Yet, Netflix’s adaptation does not seem to realize that destiny is not enough to make for a compelling story, let alone a good adaptation. Something more is needed. Much more. This is the first part of a five part series focused on understanding Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy saga. Throughout, we will look at why c...

Politics is an issue in the show. We also never needed to “modernize” it, but whatever. My main issue is how these politics are represented & how all the original themes they created were never finished. They never bother showing a conservator outlook it’s always liberal. When the Witcher was never focused on that. It also really bothers me how they have no respect for polish culture or the books. The writers actively trying to ruin what was already created. Then we have terrible race swapping choices with Triss who is now black because DEI. I can only imagine the conversation Geralt and Triss had when she suddenly changed skin colors. Every show does not need diversity & no show needs race swapping. Create your own character & designs instead of ruining existing ones. I love how people gloss over this like it doesn’t matter, but switching Henry Cavil with Liam Hemsworth and still calling him Geralt is the weird part. Both are jarring and dumb. You can’t just lazily place diversity anywhere and call it good. Blood Origins and the race swapping really show how creatively bankrupt these Hollywood writers are. They can’t even make a great Witcher series even when they had the entire thing handed to them. Instead they chose a writer who glossed over the books what a joke. 😂 Terrible show in every aspect. A disgrace to the Witcher series & saying politics isn’t part of the problem is a lie. I’m also surprised she was never fired. She barely writers the show anymore. Yet she’s still getting paid for other writers doing her job? Hollywood is mind boggling.
So. I watched this 5 episode marathon. I played all games, will play them again soon (i think). I watched the series when it aired (currently scored by me at 6/10). What's missing are the books. I have two of them, at the bottom of a stack of books... since a couple of months. Now i feel motivated to read them xD Btw, found by accident a tweet about a commentary of Andrzej Sapkowski concerning the series. It claims he said: "I've seen better. I've seen worse." x.com/Kathleenmms321/status/1620835024231890944 Thank you for your work, even when i'm not - at least not yet - able to judge about how close to the truth you are.
52:19 this morality present in mainstream media is perplexing to me. Often characters guilty of mass murder are portrayed as goofy, silly, and redeemable. But a character can NEVER be redeemed of sexual misconduct or assault.
28:10 hmmmm this phenomena of way the the Netflix writers treat humans is a phenomena I’ve noticed the media and academia also employ against another demographic frequently the last 15ish years
4:55 I venture to guess the reason diversity doesn’t seem so organic in America is because people won’t stop talking about diversity. America IS diverse, so shut up and 99/100 people will just let you be and the organic feeling will arise.
"The 13 year old writing the dialogue of this game" joke lands so hard, especialy since all the time when you are in combat the guards yell-"Die, you idiot" 🤣
netflix should add this to the witcher playlist
4:05 she doesn't even bother to say Andrzej's name the correct way, just renamed him as Andrew 👀
Honestly, seeing the successes of the korean TV shows like kingdom and squid game etc i wish more regional productions (outside of USA and Canada i mean) succeed and have great successes. Now more than ever i feel like we need more diversity in who and how makes the things, not just follow in the shallow trope-ridden (in a bad way) path the 'big shows' follow. Not everything has to be the next 'game of thrones', not everything has to be DnD, there are so many interesting things/worlds invented that are unique in their takes and they deserve good adaptations
4 years later and it's the same as it ever was
they could have at least cast hot polish yen
Their reuniting in something more was so beautiful..it falls flat in the show. Why did they erase Brokilon? :(
There were no LGBT free zones , its fake news. I dont think that gays were in the hiding.
I dont know why you're characterising Henry as the villain here when he was the only one trying to keep to the source material. Adaptation does not mean reimagining. Changing charactees temperaments, attitudes, entire plots (Yen losing her powers? Wtf), that is NOT adaptation. The showrunners should have been fired on the spot.
I think a single detail that really shows how twisted the themes and bonds are in the show is that scene of Geralt stating in season 2 that Ciri is not his daughter vs Geralt in Blood of elves, when a soldier asks him "Hey, who's that girl with, is she yours, witcher?" He immediately goes "Yes."
Agreed with every single thing you say. Must have felt like I did when I first played. Super hyped for this and it turns out to be a jumbled mess. AC3 was the first game I ever played that had a bug that prevented me from continuing. AC Origins first game that I had to FORCE myself to complete felt so bad.
As a Polish, I totally agree. It's great to see an American that sees this problem. I just wish there were more people like you in the movie industry. I have nothing against doing series and movies from an American point of view. Heck - my favourite show of all time - Better Call Saul - very strongly presents strictly American problems, challenges, mentality, etc. But it's incredibly written, intriguing, and believable. But here the source material is Polish in nature. The themes are connected to our political situation and cultural challenges we face (or faced) in Poland. It would be interesting if those perspectives were intertwined but it's so purely American that it turns Witcher into "Generic-XXI-century -Woke-Fantasy-Series -by-Netflix no. 55". There are a lot of Anglosaxon stories that can be told from this perspective. Lauren Hissrich should have tackled those. Instead, she butchered series that had potential to be on the level of GoT, if not better.
Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I have never seen a TV writer give so many interviews. Especially one who is so defensive, maybe it was the cut but it was excuse after excuse. At least now I know who she is, makes it easier to never watch anything she's involved with again. What this team did to The Witcher, was worse than what they did to GOT. What a shame.
"I wanted the world to feel very different than the world of the witcher" if i was a fan, i'd be pissed
I think the world had quite enough of "the American view"...
The most basic problem of Netflix, Hollywood, BBC (you name it): Entertainers who think they are teachers and they have a message to convey to "commoners," while in fact they remain a marginal bunch of ill-educated morons and perverts.
A year later I still wonder if they know what a Basilisk is.
Have you ever heard the phrase "to know who wants to control you, find out who you cannot criticize?" So maybe it's not such a great idea to collect all of your "minority" groups and condemn ever portraying any of them as anything other than perfect altruistic angels. I hate to spoil this for you, but they are every bit as capable of disgusting, selfish and evil acts as whichever group you deem the "majority." By trying so hard to coddle them you actually make it really obvious that we live in a two- tiered society, and the "majority" group is the only one I see actively demonized every day simply for existing. (By the way, I put minority and majority in quotations because if you look at global statistics those terms are used incorrectly. Just another example of how the people ruling in western societies today literally hate the people who built and maintain those societies.)
I love your passion dude! I wish television studios would put people like you in charge of writing and running these shows, especially the ones with so much source material. It boggles my mind that they consistently fumble so badly, but they do. The Witcher, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and many more have all been sacrificed at the alter of political writing by committees. And the cherry on top, every time they receive well deserved criticism they blame it on the fans and double down on the bad politics. Thank you new friend, I've enjoyed watching your analysis.
How hard is it to do what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings and say "this isn't my story, it's Sapkowski's"??
Speaking of costumes, I've rarely seen characters dressed so badly in the third season. Okay, they changed the famous “armor” of the Nilfgaardian soldiers, but as for the rest, it was a descent into hell. Take Milva, for example, who looks like NOTHING. A cosplay by a complete amateur can be done a thousand times better with less budget. It's incomprehensible to leave the costume designer so much in the dark... in season 3!!
2:19:42 Using bows and arrows might actually be a good idea in a dessert as sand can cause a lot of problems with regular semi-auto action rifles because it mixes with the lubrication. I don't know if that's why they did it, but it does have a practical reason.
They turned The Witcher inti The Bitcher.
It was the poor writing. Look at blood origins. As a person that has had the pleasure of acting, trust me, horrible writing and direction can cripple your performance. Usually with a poor quality script and vision that’s when actors try to step in and fill in the gaps. It’s difficult to work with barely nothing or something that doesn’t make sense. I agree one must always be respectful to the ones that are creating this production and at the end their say is law. However, it doesn’t make it any less painful for the ones who have to perform it. I understand why he left in the end.
One of the best video critiques on the internet, please come on EFAP and talk about AC
Thank you for this, I haven't really got the time to dig through all the controversy behind the scenes and this neatly packaged most of it up for me. My issue after reading the books and playing the games was always going to boil down to the fact that this was a series of books that was more invested in characters for how it told a story, and less about the world those characters inhabited and this show changed those characters to fit their narrative, changing the characters is ignoring the source material entirely, even if you still put those characters in the same stories, all of the heart was gone because those were not the characters that were supposed to be there. Watching Yen and Geralt break up after rescuing the dragon because the dragon told Yen about Geralts wish... when in the books Yen heard the wish and that was why she was endeared to Geralt in the first place. It wasn't some magical connection they couldn't shake, she heard that he was willing to choose her despite it all and he felt that he was willing to link himself entirely to another person for the first time... It was a special moment between 2 incredibly well written characters and the moment was completely ruined even though the story stayed mostly the same. They focused more of the story around Yennefer but they got her character completely wrong which is just forcing me to watch waaayy too much bad Yennefer. (no hate to the actress at all). Yen and Ciri make no sense together in season 3 because season 2 butchered their relationship and so Yen's motivations going forward in season 4 and 5 will never really ring true because even though we've seen some moments of them bonding, it was no where near enough to erase season 2 and it still doesn't make sense that Yen recognized Ciri's power and fell in love with her because of that? Yen loves Ciri in the books because she was young and training under her and living with her and became a mother/daughter type relationship naturally.
"witcher should be about non-europeans and homosexuality because an audience would never understand a story written by a polish guy under communism" Wow, this is a take so fucking stupid I legitimately was not able to see it coming.
I had to keep turning the volume up and down throughout this video.
this is constructive nitpicking
This video is goated. Perfectly articulated my issues w this game. As an OG AC fan, I had no idea why a lot of the community liked this game at launch. It removed/worsened so many gameplay elements, and the origin story was half-assed. Sad to see ubisoft double down and destroy the franchise.
Quite frankly if the original bait and switch happened origins would have most likely bombed every time I hear anyone discuss origins I see them talk about how great bayek is
Great video and I totally agree with you
It's comforting to see this adequately critiqued here. It was so frustrating to see how badly the shows writer's handled the social and political themes of the books, which are both central and nuanced. That's bad enough, but those same writers introducing their own half-baked and often incoherent political messaging in its place is really just mind-boggling. Better excise the allegory entirely than make it confused and absurd.
Shout out to the outstanding audio books read by Peter Kenny. Glad to see/hear them used here.
In short: this was a book about a guy. I wanted to write a book about a woman. So I parasitized the reputation and audience of the guy story.
What a weird video, you're essentially working backwards from the position that the quality of the protagonist is somehow the cause of different creative visions. You weren't on set when they filmed it, and you don't know what direction Cavill was being given, period. I mean, there is obviously some merit to this, considering the interviews you show, but interviews are also 99% fluff most of the time. The bottom line is, Cavill tried to adapt Geralt faithfully and the writers wanted to write their own character completely. Your argument is so weird, it's like you were trying to be as contrarian as possible. Like, gee who's fault is it that the show is a fucking mess, the one actor or basically everyone who makes actual decisions?
This video series is longer than the runtime of all the good episodes of the witcher combined 😂
One of the best reviews i have seen so far. It was year ago since i installed Origins (my last AC games were Unity and Black Flag). I heard people always say this game was the best Assasins Creed game ever. i gave it a try. Honestly, it was very boring after the first 10 hours. The main issue was really the stealth kills. I couldnt play like a real assasin, it felt like a Dark Souls or Elden Ring game, it didnt feel like AC anymore. Aside from that, the worst thing they did was to nerf the hidden blade. WTF, how are you supposed to kill from the shadow if your hidden blade cant do shit. These level type games are really bad, this system doesnt work with AC. With all honesty, i enjoyed AC: Mirage way more. They brought back the old hiding methods that i really enjoyed, follwing the prey, hiding in the mass, watching and planning.
2:30:26 I forgot to mention this: in no way shape or form could someone call AC2 “mature”. And let’s not act like that 13 year old didn’t takeover the keyboard when Ezio makes a sex joke literally seconds after Teodora talks about her dumbass religion idea.
When Sister Teodora was discussing her frankly retarted view of religion It made me reconsider if I should have had the game on mute or not
@@DarkMan416 Same lol and to imagine that she was to represent Martin Luther in AC Universe 🥴🥴🥴 disgusting
Damn, I love your version of the song 🎉🔥
Will you ever make a Black Flag video, that would be my dream
The prologue is so bad it ruined my desire to continue playing and I stopped 2 hours after unlocking the whole mao
I NEED you to make a critique video on the Ezio Trilogy too because I think it has most of the problems you’ve mentioned. Amazing video btw, I hope you continue with the series 🫶 I love in depth videos like this! Hell, make them 10 hours long if you want to, I’d still watch them lol. Although I don’t know if you plan to continue as you haven’t uploaded for over a year now… :(
1:01:48 This is bs complaint. Ac1 Maria Thorpe. Ac Brother Micheletto. AC4 Woodes rogers and Turbiron. It’s a simulation and killing the target accesses the actual memory in which the target was killed
Wow, I really enjoyed this and it has made me gain so much more respect for the source material that I only lightly knew about. But this also makes me sad at the thought of what the show could have been if it was better managed and the people producing it had as much passion, love and respect for the source material, the author and the audience.
