Hard Truths: Book Writing Competitions
Writing contests provide an opportunity for writers to get recognition for their work, win monetary prizes, and even have their work pitched to literary agents.
Understanding how contests actually work and what types of projects typically resonate is essential to any writer looking to compete-the story idea, the quality of the writing sample, the voice of the author, etc.
Our Book Pipeline (bookpipeline.com/) execs, Matthew J. Misetich, Ciara Duggan and Jeanne Veillette Bowerman, join contest-winning writer Laura Picklesimer to offer insider tips on writing competitions.

This is actually surprisingly interesting!!
Considering I write (and draw), I'm hoping this can be useful for my future projects!
Thank you guys.
You're welcome!
I always think about and visualize a scene before I write it. Also, the script is always in my head 24/7.
Saving to watch later. I did a blue pencil session with Aaron two years ago and learned a lot from him. We had fifteen minutes to discuss the sample from my manuscript and he gave me about 35 minutes. Great guy, and the Finnegan novels are absolutely solid.
Film Freeway has some dubious competitions, especially if it has a well-known city like London or New York in the title.
Thanks for sending the recording, Jeanne! I was signed up for the meeting, but didn't get to the live recording. Victoria is so committed to her mission of exposing the world of scammers and other nefarious issues facing writers.
Thank you for recording this!
I got here via former literary agent Nathan Bransford and - wow! - is it interesting.
So glad you found us! We love Nathan Bransford!
I wish I had Jeff Portnoy as a manager.
Great talk. Engaging people. Some truisms. Write the story you want to tell,
As an Australian, I know how to pronounce Lubbock, the birthplace of Buddy Holly and Gary Busey. Sugarland is part of Houston. But seriously, I agree there is always a creative response to an obstacle. I remember drum machines and synth taking over in the 80s. When techno came in the 90s. People would say the guitar is dead. 2023. NOPE. I remember 20 years ago people said digital would eliminate actors. People will grab hold of AI as a novelty. Like fads, crazes, and novelty they can die in the dust. The only danger is not to let good things die. It's interesting you say there is nothing good on streaming, when I overhear the streaming rubbish my housemate and her kids are watching, it's almost like it is written by AI already. This could be the time for INDIES again. It may be a thing where Ai is exposed and trashed. Eventually, people will go where the good stuff is. THANKS, SCOTT MYERS FOR YOUR INSPIRATION. I FOLLOW YOU ON MEDIUM and TWITTER.
Very interesting, and inspiring. Thanks
Really enjoyable. Both guys know what they are talking about. Thanks for the information.
I missed the session. Im happy there's a recording
i write comedy comic musical short
regards
Thank you all so much for doing this. Very enlightening to look at it all from the producer's side. Loved Lovelace and Before I Go to Sleep and looking forward to seeing more of your films, especially Hypnotic!
This was a great video. I've actually spoken with Roni before via the pipeline info phone call you offer. It was a great convo and I learned a lot from just a short call. Two things I wanted to share 1) I really appreciated Joshua's recommendation for completing shorts for aspiring screenwriters. It makes a lot of sense on why you would stand out with that under your belt versus just scripts. 2) For the question on someone coming to screenwriting at a later stage and older, this one resonated with me since I'm in that boat. An advice given to me from an experienced TV writer was pursuing a TV writing cert from UCLA Extension. The entire program is a pretty swingable cost ($4k) and so far I love the experience. I also lucked out because I got a grant from my county to cover it. So maybe that program or something similar to it could be a great way to take a serious step in getting started. Hope this is something helpful!
Thanks all -- super informative! Compliments to the whole team for putting together a panel of people who are committed to sharing openly and keeping the info flowing. For this is not always the case, with such panels...
I'd like to ask a question, but don't see a technical venue? Want to ask if an agent is interested in a Bible for a TV series: A synopsis and pilot episode. Is that enough?
At 45" re Westerns - how about The Power of the Dog? Didn't it win an Oscar this year? (Though it was no where near as good as True Grit which won 5 Oscars 11 years ago, inc'g Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Directing, Best Actor & Best Actress - plus got nominated for 5 others.)
This was the realest talk I’ve heard as far as writers webinars. From the work ethic, the financial, the representation. Kudos 👍🏾👍🏾
So glad you enjoyed it, Moe!
Great video. Who's the Andy at 28 minutes that you are discussing?
This was very informational. It got my "juices flowing" to want to polish up that novel I've been writing forever and "take it to the prom".
On notes/feedback - learning to navigate that space between "OMG you said my baby's ugly!" and "what's going to best serve the story" can be the hardest thing for any creative to learn, but it's critical across the board.
Agree with the structure argument for any storytelling, whether a movie or novel. I've read books and seen movies without structure, and the story falls apart.
This is a really interesting interview. I am learning a lot and appreciate the expertise. Thank you both.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed the conversation, Don!
First comment. I win again!
Fantastic interview.! Brilliant film, scared the bejesus out of me!!
Love this interview! Such great questions with amazing artists.

So fun, friends!! Also, fun fact, I keep using the term "story seminar" when it is actually called a "story summit." LIVE podcasting, friends. Live!
We had so much fun that we didn't care what you called it. Thanks again, Did!
Lots of good stuff here. Reckless Creativity indeed!
Skyler is amazing! Bold and daring.
Sadie's mom is the best! She really is super cool!
