I have just picked up a 5.4 avon with the flooding hull will go dow the route of adding a bilge area and pump. I think i saw the stainless hatch on ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Marine-Deck-Plate-Inspection-Hatch-Stainless-Steel-Access-Hatch-Cover/233095757641?hash=item364596ff49:g:sJoAAOSw-V1cPfpw I have ordered one so will see how things go.
im planning on blanking off my flooding hull also. blanking of the two nostrils at the bow and the 3" drain hole at the stern ( using a 3"inch Marine Deck Plate Inspection Hatch Stainless Steel of ebay £20 from china) . im only running 25hp so the flooding hull isnt ideal taks a while to get rid of the water with a bit of weight on board. then cut the floor and make a 'well' area for water to gather and for pump to sit in., Theres very little depth in the flooding hull doubt you will be able to fit a pump in there, well is a much better option means theres so be no water in the hull, nice and dry
Yeah it seems like a good idea and decent improvement modification for my requirements, Ive cut out for a 270mm x 120mm rectangular hatch towards the rear approx 200mm away from the transom, that's right, pull start motor at the moment, although I do have a 35hp electric start which may find its way onto the vessel for next season.
The well may be a evolution, I might steal your idea, sounds good, as you say the underfloor "ballast" area is quite shallow, the pump fits just, I was testing with a 15 hp motor hence my thought process along the same lines ;-)
