Restoration project start ... What have i got? - Saving Susanna Ep.1

This is a video series on the restoration of a classic wooden sailboat designed by John Illingsworth and Angus Primrose, and built around 1964. It will also likely feature my attempt at learning to sail her :) Never owned a boat. Never been on a sailboat.
Green hull beige deck
10:00 go with sealing her up leaving her there and towing her down. She is a tough old ship. She can handle it and towing is less stress on the hull all the preasure is even. Trailering her means you got high stress points on the hull from cradle contact points.
Yes they are very good points. In the end i did transport her by road. My thinking in the end was the stress of her expanding and contracting with the sea and then the drying again. It was a bit 'sketchy' at times but thankfully she's in her new home safe and sound!
That mixed paint in the he bilge is a nice mustard yellow. I like it.
Haha cheers! :))
Not professional!

Hi, nice job, I’m surprised hat you didn’t use painter’s masking tape. Did you fix the leaks through the deck before painting the headliner?
@@andrewbrown2063 Hi, Thanks! I didn’t use tape as I’m a painter so it’s fairly easy to paint a line (once it’s marked- I’d used tape for the other colours) And I fixed the leaks ‘temporarily’ - although that are done properly now! :)
Go with the green...its already there and it looks good. Besides, cream is an unlucky color...everyone knows that!
Haha brilliant! I'll take that :) Cheers!
Lovely little boat but can i ask who’s music is playing and can i find it thanks
Thank you :) I subscribe to 'Epidemic Sounds' for the music so that i am licensed to use it on UA-cam. I looked for the music for this video to tell you who it is by but of all the episode files i have for the music i can't find this one! Sorry! :(
I see how the green could work, I just think its not the right green shade. Your doing a great job
Thank you... And yes, The Green wasn't quite what i'd hoped for....
60 year old laminate
Yep..! :)
This might be a dumb question (new subscriber here) Shouldn't the entire hull be caulked before any finish goes on?
Not a dumb question... The varnish i put on is to essentially protect the boat while she is restored. There will be quite a few more coats put on later (when she is caulked etc...) And in fact a fair amount of what varnish has been put on will likely be sanded back again! Leaving the wood 'raw' would have left it to the elements, sun bleaching etc as well as any staining from spilt coffee and anything else! Cheers for being a new subscriber! 👍
hello matey ,I bought an Elizabethan 29 from a place on the deben and the first time we, me and a friend ,took her out it was up the Stour about as far as you could go at low water , we took to walking thro' the corn fields , this was a lovely summers day , and came out on a road opposite a pub called the 3 brothers I think ,great Sunday roast , what a fabulous day. My mate knows the stour well because he was at Shotley and believe it or not was a button boy ! he remembers rowing the boat in the morning with the coxain bellowing and I believe they learnt to sail it as well about your boat ,I would love to be younger ,I would do what you are doing and get a good wooden boat , great job you are doing
Ah man, great story! That does sound a day to remember - Simple and unexpected are very often the best, and most memorable :) Yes, the Stour is a beautiful river, particularly on a lovely summers day! - And yes, i am loving what i'm doing, restoring a wooden boat - it's a real pleasure. Can't wait until i'm sailing her along the Stour! Cheers :))
Mate, build a roof over it, a shed around it if you want.
Yes, i did later on, she needed a roof! :)
Don't sweat. It's just wood ... needing replacement. No biggie. Slowly slowly, 1 bit at a time.
Cheers for the encouragement! and yes - you are right. One piece at a time....
Just found this channel and binge watched Tevita. Great job. Can’t wait to see her with sails.
@@simh77 Thanks! And thanks for saying :))
When it was white I thought, that is a sharp looking boat. Now that it is green I’m thinking “THAT IS A SHARP LOOKING BOAT!”
@@TheThriftyWoodworker haha cheers mate! :))
Don't let the cvolour mess with your head otherwise you'll be thinking on it and fuck something up ,leave it or you will be on a 252!!!
Haha yes, you are right! (I've left it - at least for the time being)
Yes you can ,They are getting mixed up with cars, Green cars are not so much unlucky as really stupid ,we live in a green environment ,hedges ,trees grass and country buses ,yeah your insurance bloke will tell you to,"Don't buy a green car"!! generally its the topsides you see from a distance first , of course you could have red sails , that would put your mind at rest I'd like to know where you are it looks great there
Yes, Red sails would help her stand out a bit more... As for cars i agree - although the amount of 'road' coloured cars always supprises me! grey/black ones... I'm in Harwich, in Essex - UK. The stour estuary is a beautiful place!
Nice vid bro, and great selection of buckets hats.
Haha cheers mate! :))
Great job, really brought some life back into the interior. Bit mad at UA-cam only flashing this up to me 2 days later though. Make sure you get plenty of sailing in on Tevita, it's the pay off that keeps the motivation up. 👍
Thank you :) And yes, Sailing is the pay off! - i can't say that i'm getting 'plenty of sailing' but getting some at least.... And yeah, not sure why it's notified 2 days later... it maybe because i haven't put a video out in a bit and the Algorithm doesn't like me anymore! Cheers!
Glad to see you back!! And that you’re a fellow vw owner 😊
@@Choppingwoodcarryingwater_ cheers fellow VW owner! yeah, I love that camper :))
Looking ship shape, brother 🍻
Laborious prep work but the result is amazing! And, love the camper van you have; nicely fitted out.
Thank you! :) - And yes, i love that camper... Took a bit of work overall but really worth it. Cheers!
😊well worth the wait, amazing transformation, you've done a great job well done.
Thank you, appreciate your saying!
I was a boat builder a while back. So far , you have done nice work, but I don’t think that I would have taken this boat on for restoration. If you are not giving a good eye to every square inch, you will find rot all around you. You are a better boat person than I, certainly more patience.
I did give the ol' girl a reasonable look over before taking her on - although that is not to say there wasn't a good chance of finding rot! - luckily she was pretty sound, apart from the cabin top there was only one bit and that was in the deadwood....
How many green boats do you see when you are out sailing?
Yeah, not many to be fair - but i do see a few....
Nice music
Cheers! :))
personally i think the green looks very nice indeed .
Thank you :))
anything with the word MARINE on it will cost you double,
Haha - yes indeed!!
I really liked the undercoat colour :))
Yes, a few people said that - even in the yard when i painted her. I'll probably change the colour to cream next year as she gets very hot being green - and also hard to see her! Cheers!
Pressure washing first would have saved you hours and given you a better paint job, too.
Yes it would have, but i didn't have a hose long enough to reach where she is... 😬
The ‘ceiling’ on a yacht is on the inside of the yacht’s hull. The structure overhead is the ‘deckhead’. Likewise, a yacht will have a number of ‘floors’, which are structural members attaching the hull to the keel.
I painted one of my earlier yachts green, very similar to the hue which you ha chosen, and it worked just fine.😊
Ah grand good to know :)) Cheers! - Sorry for the delay in replying to your comments!
Don’t you have a rudder for the ship?
In a few episodes..... :)
It converts the unstable iron oxide to a more stable iron phosphate.
Ah, Cheers! :)
Do we know what the model of the boat is yet . length ?
Yes, It's a 'Top Hat 25' - Designed by John Illingsworth and Angus Primrose back in the 60's. - Sorry for the delay in replying!
I love the look of the rivets withe the varnish . SO much more character than paint .
Thank you for saying. I do as well, although i was thinking about how to clean them up a bit. I may not and just leave as is. Cheers, sorry for the delay in replying!
I enjoyed watching this restoration. Thanks for sharing. From Canada.
Thank you, appreciated :))
The color is perfect. Nice job!
Thank you! :)
Fantastic job on the restoration of the boat. I just wish you had picked some other color combination other then red and green.
@@johnrobutka7697 Thank you, and yeah, you’re not the first to say that! :)
All my boats have been green and some of them didn’t sink.
@@annoyingbstard9407 haha brilliant! thanks for the confidence boost! :)
I thought you were near Hawick but got it confirmed in this last episode, assuming Manningtree?
Hi yes you’re right:) Susanna is near manningtree and Tevita is in Harwich - Susanna is about to be taken to Harwich too. 👍
I really like the green alot
Paint above waterline very dark gray with black stripes. Navy vet.
Haha - Would probably look pretty cool, although it's hard enough to see in the water as it is being Green! :) Cheers!
I love the green color on your boat. Keep it.
Cheers! :)
It'll look nice when you paint the hull white.
Haha ;)
