Practical Advocacy for Busy Librarians by Dr. Andrew Smith
We all know that we must continually advocate for libraries, but the thought of organizing big advocacy campaigns can be overwhelming.
This webinar presents some effective strategies for building an advocacy program for your library that focuses on small advocacy tasks that can easily be accomplished with a minimal investment of time and money.
The webinar covers the necessity of library advocacy, planning for advocacy, identifying appropriate advocacy targets, discovering advocacy resources, and developing advocacy tools to equip yourself, your staff, and your board members. It also suggests ways to build small advocacy tasks into your regular work routines to develop a habit of advocacy and library promotion.

Did you know that WWII Black veterans and descendants are STILL not allowed GI bill benefits? There is a bill in the house to change this. Authentic CRT seeks to identify and remedy these type of systemic inequalities.

Thank you for clarification on this area! I am interested in researching programing ideas for people with special needs and also focusing on mental health and wellness. Do either of these fall into this arena? I am totally new to the mlis program, but eager to learn! Also, I do not have an undergrad degree in health care or experience in health care, so would I need to get an additional masters degree to be a competitive applicant in a medical library or would the mlis suffice?

Great questions! These topics would definitely fit under the Health Information Professionals concentration. While the courses may not specifically focus on these topics within the defined course content, there would be the opportunity to focus on these topics for individual assignments (e.g., creating a Pathfinder on mental health and wellness). You do not need an undergrad degree in health care or experience to be a medical librarian. Most medical librarians do not have that kind of background! It helps to get experience where you can - either through MLS coursework, internships, or on the job training. Some medical librarians get second Masters degrees in related fields (e.g., Public Health), but that is definitely not required. Hope to see you in our classes!
