沖縄 Okinawa Bike Camping [Day 4 Sosu Beach to Kin]
This flip flop navigator adventure is day 4 of my 500 kilometer bicycle circumnavigation of the island of Okinawa in Southern Japan.
On day 4 I wake up on the north east coast of Okinawa with the sun poking through the clouds.
With 200 kilometers behind me from the first 3 days I head south up and down rolling hills hoping to make it to Kin where I have a gracious host willing to put me up for the night or find a camping spot where I can charge my cameras, computer, and phone.
Thank you, thank you
Eat this
Ahhh I haven’t eaten Spam musubi yet
Oh really???
Good Good Good, please eat it.
There’s wasabi in there, and abura miso.
I love wasabi
Oh really hahahahaha
Thank you, drive safe
Thank you
Where did you ride from?
I started in Yomitan
Oh I see then you are planning to ride around the island.
Yes I am doing a circumnavigation of the island
It’s about 470 kilometers.
Oh I see, that is great, I love training too!
This hill is really tough but now I have water so it’s ok.
Thank you very much for the musubi.
Eat it, eat it
I’ll eat it now
Good luck!
Similar to Hawaii Spam was introduced after World War II to Okinawans who were struggling to rebuild after the war.
They began to use Spam as a cheap, non-perishable source of protein incorporating it into traditional Okinawan dishes, such as "soki soba" (a noodle soup) and "Spam musubi” (rice balls).
Spam became a key part of the Okinawan and Hawaiin local food culture.
What is this?
What do you call that?
Then I’ll just give it a taste
Thank you!
These veggie stands in Okinawa are called "yōgō" or "trust stands". You pay on the honor system.
The idea is rooted in the trust and sense of community that exists in Okinawa, where people often prioritize mutual respect and honesty.
It’s an example of how social trust works in Okinawa where Yogo are still quite common.
"Yasuragi" (やすらぎ) means peace, calm, serenity, tranquility.

Day 3 65.24km to Sosu Beach (200.13)
Day 4 92.39km to Kin Town (292.52)
I ended up riding a total of 92 kilometers on day 4 bringing my trip total to 292 kilometers. The day ended at hosts house and then after a shower at a local izakaya for sushi and Orion beer.
Stay tuned for day five of my 500 kilometer circumnavigation of Okinawa. On day 5 I ride from Kin to Ikei Island exploring 4 islands connected to mainland Okinawa by bridges.

Fun video! Looks like the best path is off the beaten path. I know the main route is marked with a blue line and easy to navigate. Curious what you use to plan your trip and ride the smaller, less known tracks. I bikepacking off-road in Idaho, Wyoming and Oregon and use RWGPS and paper backups. Great trip!

Spent 18 months on Okinawa at Camp Schwab . Left a month before Okinawa was repatriated back to the Japanese. More then a few Okinawans were NOT looking forward to that change. Given the history I completely sympathized. Could have stayed longer but that would have required a multi year reenlistment in the USMC. So nope.😆 Loved the island and the people. Well. Except for the snakes . Looks like you are well traveled . I will have to check out your other Asian vids. I pretty much had the same travel itinerary you have as I also spent 12 months in Vietnam. Thanks !

@@bonnies6963 the coldest it gets a 68°. I was so hot and sweaty from biking it felt great for a few minutes. I did a bunch of Internet research on whether I needed to rinse or not. One website said absolutely otherwise you’ll get all kinds of diseases, but 99 other website said no problem. There’s already salt on your skin. No need to rinse with freshwater. People have been bathing in saltwater for years.
