Episode 3 - Varnishing
Hello everyone!
Kenneth and I are here today and we’re gonna put a nice coat of @TotalBoat Gleam Varnish on the gunnels. I’m not a professional. I’m not a professional painter. I’m not a professional varnisher, but these are professional products so it comes out really really nicely. Let’s get started! 🛶
Thank you for watching!!

The prep work on our 23 foot skiff is just about done. All I really have left to do is tape it off, I mean, I’ve showed you how I sanded it, what I used to sand it, and what little effort it was to sand it because the paint sands so well. The first thing I want to do is explain to you that I’m using a polyurethane paint. This is total boat’s wet edge one part polyurethane paint. @totalboat reco...

Hi kids, it’s Lou here. I’m just about to repaint this 23 foot bottom skiff that I built here quite some time ago. I’ve still got it in my possession after quite a while and you know the paint job held up really really nicely and you know, but we decided that we could actually do a better job painting and you know we wanted to get a nice base of this finished paint on the boat because the finis...
Love this Guy and his knowledge
Great video as usual. Any recommendations on the type of brush to use for varnish work? Thanks.
Looking good Lou!
Awesome work Lou and Kenneth! The boat is looking fantastic!
Watching Kenneth’s level of concentration.. that’s professional level for sure.
Lou did you forget your login details?
Nice work there. I'll have to pick up some of that Gleam.
Kenneth laser focused on that varnish application! 😂😂😂
Kenneth is an old pro, always finishes with a light tip back into the work with a gentle lift, which is exactly how I learned it 70 years ago from my Dad.
That sanding block looked like a chalkboard eraser.
I've always fond varnishing to be very theraputic.
Good to have you back Lou! You too Kenneth!
Lou needs to show us a newspaper with the current date, or these are bootleg videos.
Gleam by total boat is a very new product, so it has to be new or fairly new
@@GrimmWoodWoodworking Gleam has been around for a while but some of the cans in the video do show our new logo!
This isn't him. it's someone impersonating him, using content ALREADY ON HIS OTHER CHANNEL. in real life he 'doesn't know how this youtube thing works' and lets that producer kid do everything. or, this is probably TotalBoat trying to make money from his old videos. he doesn't know anything about this channel.
I suspect this is true. Lou used to thank new Patreon members, so he has demonstrated a willingness to communicate directly with his audience. The fact he hasn't addressed his absence or the status of the Orca project is a big red flag.
Glad to see you again!
Sure would love a few words to explain the absence. Almost seems like a found footage channel now.
Why are you so heartless towards people who ask for what is going on with the orca project? I don't get it. People are only showing their sincere interest. If that's the way it goes then I am no longer interested at all.
Nice tip on the tape Lou. Thank you.
I used to be a house painter. I miss it. Yours looks great! Hey whats that stick doing there? That big one that looks like a keel?
Welcome back.
the patreon wall is kind of ironic
I tried rolling and tipping Wet Edge also and found if I just went back over each section real lightly with the roller it came out nice. So I kind of tipped it with the roller.
Did you quit @TipsfromaShipwrightvideos?
You should watch Bondo Billy and get a Billy sander!
Hope you are well sir
Great stuff, Lou - thanks! It’s not everyday you learn TWO new taping techniques! 😎
Awesome painting tips, Lou! The fresh coat of paint looks fantastic!
Glad you are back on line! Great videos.
Great to see you. As William said below, Ocra is in the background. Any plans to start that project up again?
Orca orca orca. We all want more orca. Keep going sir. Respect.
I see the Orca project in the background!
Great to see you, Lou! And I finally learned how I should have taped under my gunwales! I made a hash of it, but no one looks. And then I trashed them on a janky dock on a windy day. Another project!
Finally after many years someone shows me how to use tape. Thanks
Shaddup punk
If you don't like it DONT WATCH.
I did not see much of that paint go on upside down!!! CHEERS from HERE!
Yes what did I miss
You standing up in that boat your repainting now and driving it around that harbor after you finished it was one of the coolest most amazing videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Your passion and skill of boatbuilding is amazing and fun to watch. Viewers like myself respect your privacy but maybe please consider doing a Question and Answer video even if very limited. Why the new channel, what about the Orca project?
Another great video! It’s good to see you working on boats again! Keep those videos coming!
Definitely good to see you doing boat work again! Are we going to see anymore Orca?
Good to have you back Lou
Glad to see you back but I'm a bit confused as to the coherence of all your previous projects. What's your timeline?
beautiful
What ever happened to the Orca boat project?
i think its laid on the floor in the shop, Lou looked to be working round it when he did the transom area
what about the money people sent? what happened to that ??
Let's build a boat Anyone can paint
It's really good to see Lou!
Great tape trick!
Great to have you back Lou. Couldn't figure out where you disappeared to, even asked Leo -Tally Ho.

Great method with the tape Lou .....pleased to see you back ....If you don,t mind me asking will you still be building Orca ?
You can see in the background that Orca is still just as he left it a couple years ago. He doesn’t seem to answer questions from anyone.
Excellent work as always, great camera angles
