DIY & Woodworking with No fancy tools (yet)
About Mario Man
The penguin who loves making things, even if they don’t always turn out... pretty. He’s got his very own "Ugly/Practical" style, but hey, it works! His true passion lies in hand tools, and he’s been wielding his trusty Japanese hand saw with pride for as long as he can remember. As for his other favourite tool, he’s been using the same Olfa cutter since he was a young penguin.
Spoiler
He still manages to cut himself, which is why there’s a bandage on his flipper in the logo. His workspace always features pink sticky gaffer tape, which is both practical and, let’s be honest, adds flair to every project.
The Mission
Mario Man dreams of returning to his homeland, where his beloved penguin friend is waiting for him, but according to his Manager, there’s a catch: he needs 100,000 subscribers to make the journey back. The stakes are high, folks. Every new subscriber means a real belly flop into the pool for Mario Man.

A Rare Find - 1939 Salter Kitchen Scale 50T Restoration
I found this rare 1939 Salter Scale 50T on eBay, made an offer, and the seller accepted. Unlike other models from this period, which typically have flat trays or rectangular weighing platforms, this scale features a removable, concave metal basket supported by crisscrossed iron bars. I’ve come across a few Salter scale restorations online, but none quite like this, especially with the year of production clearly marked on the dial, a detail that, in my opinion, adds unmatched historical charm.
Over five weeks, I spent a few hours each day stripping every component down to bare metal. The smaller parts came apart easily, but the cast iron body posed a serious challenge. A stubborn gold undercoat resisted even my impact driver’s wire brush! To avoid cracking the cast iron, I left the top pin holding a fork-shaped piece in place.
With no fancy tools and a commitment to reusing 100% of the original pieces, I worked with what I had and did the best I could. The brass dial, once polished, revealed its character, complete with timeworn marks. One base screw took three days of intense effort, using oil, heat, and even nail polish remover before it finally gave way.
Although these components are usually spray-painted for a professional finish, I love the hands-on touch of a brush, even if it sometimes leaves brush marks. I used Hammerite paint, which acts as a primer, undercoat, and topcoat in one, perfect for a classic hammered look on vintage items. The deep red colour brought this piece back to life.

DIY - Chicken Coop from Pallets Filmed with a Potato
Переглядів 705Місяць тому
Quite a long time ago, in 2016, I had the pleasure of looking after a few chickens. That summer, I spent my time building a coop for them using wood I found on the streets recycled pallets, to be exact. It wasn’t just a coop; it became a little home, complete with a runner and an enclosure. The coop was fully waterproof, featuring a big drawer underneath for easy waste management, a dedicated s...
DIY - Japanese Style Damascus Skiving Knife
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
In this video, I’m making a Japanese-style Skiving Knife with a Damascus steel blade and my favorite wood, Purpleheart, for the handle. For the leather blade sheath, I repurposed the tongue of an old pair of leather shoes, adding a personal touch to the project. Watch how I combine materials and techniques to craft this unique tool for leatherwork! // A skiving knife is a tool used to thin leat...
DIY - Carving Knife - Damascus & Purpleheart
Переглядів 831Місяць тому
In this video, I handcraft a unique carving knife using a leftover piece of Damascus steel for the blade and my favorite wood, Purpleheart, for the handle. While not every step was filmed (sometimes the craft takes over!), you'll see the key parts of the process. To finish, I designed and built a custom rotating wooden case to protect the blade when it's not in use. Support Mario Man www.patreo...
DIY - Charming Wooden Divider
Переглядів 174Місяць тому
In this video, shot in a rudimentary style with plenty of images, I created a wooden divider ( also called protractor) featuring a pencil hole and an antique nail as a punctuator. I did not film most of the process as I was enjoying too much doing it. The two arms are joined by a custom-shaped wooden wheel for better grip and added charm. Enjoy! ❤😅 Als 🚺 sage ich wow! Ich liebe es alte Dinge zu restaurieren, oft kann ich es nicht zusammen setzen! 😅 Mein Mann bekommt die "Kriese" 😂 well done❤
Vielen Dank für deinen Kommentar! Das passiert mir auch manchmal. Fotos während des Prozesses zu machen, kann wirklich helfen 🐧. Thank You
Nice work, Great editing
Thank you
Ever thought about electrolysis rust removal? Anyhow I love that you show all the steps. Most on youtube don't show how much work it actually is. Cheers
Thanks for your comment! I’m aware of the electrolysis method and definitely plan to give it a try someday. Glad you enjoyed the video and the detailed steps-appreciate the support! 🐧
Jolie sauvetage pour cette grand mère, bravo ça valait la peine 👍😉

I like the handle shape ...a lot :-)
Thank You! 🐧
Nice coop, but where will you add ventilation?
Hi there, thanks for your question! The coop is no longer in use, but when it was, I designed it with two openings on each side where the roof didn’t fully meet the walls, creating natural ventilation. It was a simple but effective solution to keep air flowing. Thanks again for watching! 🐧
Cool!
I would have preferred to just hear the sounds of you working instead of having the music. I don't particularly like music in these kinds of videos. Just the sounds of you working would've been much better.
Thanks for your feedback! I understand where you’re coming from. I agree that natural sounds can be great in restoration videos, but my environment is quite noisy 24/7, so I had to use music instead. I appreciate your understanding!
Awesome workmanship Great step by step video
Thank You!
Very nice!
Thank You!
Great view and video
Thank You!
I like that you didn’t remove all the character of the box. A block of wood makes the sanding go a lot easier. Also, if for holding leather crafting supplies, it would be cool to line the inside of the lid with leather and maybe add some pockets for holding smaller tools. Great upcycling project!
Thank you Karl !
Finally, really what I was looking for. Quick, no BS, no Music. Thanks
Thank you!
