Spoilers for FF7 original, Remake, and Crisis Core The Final Fantasy 7 Remake gave us a very emotional theme song, but many were debating who this song is actually about. Here is my take on the deeper meaning of its lyrics. "It was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, is sung by Yosh from Survive Said The Prophet. This song was confirmed by Nomura and Nojima both that it is Cloud's love for and loss of Aerith.
There is no way at all this song could be about Tifa
I did notice Aerith getting mistreated in Remake's Wall Market though I admit I didn't remember how much she contributed in the OG version there so I had no idea she got so shafted. I love your idea of how this area would play out though! It actually fixes a different problem that I noticed that you didn't touch on - Cloud's lack of agency. In OG, since Aerith brought up the "dress as a girl" idea in the beginning, Cloud was clearly willingly going along with it the whole time since you have to actively go around getting the pieces of the disguise. In Remake, Cloud isn't told about Aerith's plan until literally RIGHT before it happens. As she says, "this is our plan, and you'll learn to love it." And indeed he had no choice. Five minutes and a reluctant dance sequence later, he's completely dolled up. I really like that your version of events both gives Aerith her street savvy and contributions back AND gives Cloud his agency in going along with everything back.

Cloud *did* save an Aerith. Which Aerith he saved is up for debate (my money is on 'our' Aerith, with the original - core timeline - Aerith being the one shown dying at the end of Rebirth). Whether or not we'll get to reunite with her is something up for debate, but if I were an unbiased observer (and I am not), my money would be on them seeing each other again. There are just so many hints dropped throughout the course of Remake and Rebirth that point to them not only being destined for each other, but reuniting at some juncture. Ironically, the one thing that gives me the most hope, however, is this: 'an' Aerith has died. Why is that hopeful? Because narratively it would make hash of the moment to go and kill off another one. It would risk turning what many believe is the greatest moment in video game history (1997) and the Rebirth death into a joke; into a meme. If part 3 began with backtracking massively over Rebirth and acting like every Aerith and every timeline was now dead, or having Sephiroth annihilate them all, it would arguably be the most ham-fisted storytelling decision in the history of Final Fantasy.
Hollow is about Cloud and references Zack according to Nojima.

@@jinnimoo it's true nojima himself said no promises to keep is not just about Cloud, but the singer for the song, Loren Allred said, to be able to feel and deliver the song better, she has to "think about Aerith and her relationship with Cloud" and that is after consultation with the music team. That's why I think nojima said nptk is not just for cloud, only to please everyone.
@@norsukor5849 Nojima didn't say all those after a Loren's interview 🤦🏻♀️ The ultimania interview was done months before the game even came out and way before Loren commented on the song. The man even tweeted what the intent and inspiration was for the song, he didn't change it's origin because of how others interpreted it, otherwise you're just calling him a liar. It was intended since day one from the songwriter himself that ntpk was about everyone Aerith loves. The singer can have her own view, but ultimately Nojima is the one writing ff7.

Today Nojima, Nomura and Uematsu where talking about it in a vid. Nojima said he wrote it from Aeriths perspective but it's not Cloud or Zack per se. He said Aerith remembers how bad was her mothers life and didn't want that for herself. She sings the song to all she holds dear Ifalna, Elmyra and even Barrett or Tifa. Nojima said there's nothing bad about a love song which made me think. Isn't this purposely made vague to hit shipping communities because they are one of the most dedicated clients?
@@wmen48 I saw that interview!! I think it's... a roundabout way of staying neutral? Nomura said they wrote the lyrics to be vague but I just disagree that it's vague at all? The song explicitly mentions "city streets with worn coblestones" and "our place" - two instances that are direct callbacks to Cloud. But yeah this only will serve to make the fandom of FF7 more unbearable than ever and fuel shipping wars. It's interesting too because in the interview he says that the "promise" Aerith doesn't want to keep is her "fate". I understand that fate and promises are intertwined in the RE triology but Aerith not accepting her fate is actually in direct contradiction to what we see in game?
@@dotkiarika1026 ye it kinda makes sense. Aerith lacks cohesion but that is explained through her knowing the future. But in the end of remake before last boss starts she has the biggest out of character moment. I'm referencing her talking about changing fate (killing harbinger of fate). The moment she first stops Cloud than sais let's go and talks about boundless, terryfying freedom. I though Sephiroth wants to change fate. Though there is this an allusion that 500 years after og humanity was gone...
@@wmen48 Honestly, I don't think it makes sense at all? Aerith in Remake, with future knowledge, has accepted her fate, she straigh up says "everyone dies eventually" and challenges Sephiroth because he's the one who wants to change fate and the future he aims for is extremely lonely. In Rebirth she lost her knowledge so her arc in it culminates on her speech about being a Cetra and finally accepting what comes with it in Cosmo Canyon. The OG Aerith in the dream date also seems to have accepted her fate too. Like, at no point she's expressively against it and in the song itself where there's talk about meeting again there's no concern that such a separation must come to pass? Idk I just dont get it at all on that part
@@dotkiarika1026 Ye I get you. Same here. I asked a japanese friend for translation of that church meeting in the dream and I was stunned. In english it seems like Aerith is friendzoning Cloud. But in japanese my friend said she clearly sais I love you. With him being confused at it being so sudden. She then hugging him she said that thank you line, that also Yuna said to Tidus and in english was translated as I love you. My friend being a girl said thats exactly how she would profess love but in english it seems opposite....Generaly the whole interaction is more organic: -Cloud-Hereis where you wanted to come -Aerith-Got it right! -Cloud-It was obvious -Aerith-That's because we have few memories together -Cloud-Over time, we'll have more -Aerith-Is that what you want? -Cloud-Yes of course Compare that to english version.... Just saying with these language translation we might be missing something.
it's not she is different in remake and og. She's different in og and all other media. Same with Zack.... and Cloud. In og Aerith is like you said, a street smart girl that knew Zack was a womanizer and was over him. In other media she is this holier than though person. Zack is shades of grey kinda like Reno maybe. Clearly stating he has many girls and being pro shinra until their betrayal. Then he want's to be a mercanary for money... I know the CC version is a great hero but og... Cloud on the other hand is fixed by Tifa and himself. He makes peace with Aeriths death and is a happy fullfilled person after that. AC portrayal of Cloud and Aerith is just flanderization. It pulls them back instead of giving the OG meaning.

Love this notion that it's Cloud's point of view singing to Aerith but it's odd they re-used a music theme from Crisis Core- most the audience hearing that, think of Zack (Myself included). I would've made an original song and pulled musical motif from "Midnight Rendezvous". They said in one of the official books that "Midnight Rendezvous" was a bonding song for Cloud and Aerith.
I hope you're still out here somewhere because the Rebirth trailer dropped and No Promises To Keep is DEFINITELY an Aerith to Cloud song.

I think that probably she is still the same in Remake, as the OG, but now she likes be cuddled by Cloud, enjoying her time with him, in order to help him more, what she didn't manage to do in the OG. Just my speculation.
They probably tried to get some of the Golden Saucer vibes for Wall Market. I really enjoyed it, even if it's quite a labyrinth. I liked all the new additions and I hope this "kind of way" to developing the story and the game doesn't get lost or cut, due to the negative reviews came out from the players.
I am hoping that the remake doesn't kill Aireth (my game girl crush sorry Lara Croft) or allow her to come back to life. There was evidence in the original that you could revive Aireth you could not even get her final limit break before her death and the old man who ask for the items the "weapons" drop sounded like you could use the to revive a dead person plus the remake spared Biggs who originally died. And I am hoping Jessie survived too I didn't really feel much when she died in the original but fell in love with her in the remake (love Erica Lindbeck so cheeky and sassy) and was hoping to hear her sing before the plate bombing and now hopefully after it. I know I am probably hoping for what too much but honestly I don't understand why they chose Biggs to survive he is better in the remake but still isn't much of a character hopefully they give him some dimension. I do believe the Whispers I think they are called are trying to change the events of the original game especially since there are things that have changed and big things like Biggs's survival.
The remake has been pushing the mirroring of Aerith and Tifa more clearly then the OG. I think this is part of the reason for the gas. We get a scene where Cloud wakes up with Aerith and she asks if he is ok. Then we get a scene where Cloud wakes up with Tifa, and he asks if she is ok.

I first played FF7OG as a tween and instantly knew Cloud liked Aerith and not Tifa - pretty obvious in how thoughtful and kind he was to Aerith from the get-go while he was distant and sometimes inconsiderate to Tifa. I happened upon a Reddit asking for an "unbiased" opinion on the love triangle and people kept saying that they had thought Aerith was Cloud's love when they played as kids and when they grew up they changed their minds to Tifa being Cloud's love. Sounds like Clotis are telling on themselves that they're not interested in _Cloud's_ feelings or the narrative anymore as they age but that their focus shifted to _Tifa_ . Prioritizing Tifa is the only way to make Cloti "work" although in my opinion it still doesn't. Tifa herself is shown to be miserable and frustrated with Cloud in Case of Tifa and Advent Children. Don't know why they want their best girl to end up feeling like that from her love interest but okay.
Another little hint that it's about Cloud's feeling about Aerith and her death is that when the song is playing in the credits, Aerith's theme starts playing immediately after Hollow ends, almost like a response from Aerith to Cloud.

Also AC have another ending in Japanese called calling. And in the credits, we see Cloud riding his bike, a shot of Aerith in the flower field and then him zooming passed the flower field. It's so obvious.

What bothers me most about people thinking that this is about Zack is how important Zack somehow became to this story in the minds of so many who, I am sure, played Crisis Core before they played FF7. FF7 is Cloud's story. FF7 Remake is the story from FF7. FF7 literally starts with Aerith and ends with Aerith. Aerith is basically the main character of the whole thing. This song plays in her district. What's wrong with people thinking Zack is getting a whole song dedicated to him from Cloud's perspective and Aerith doesn't? You have to make mental gymnastics to argue that this song, playing in the home of the main heroine, with lyrics fitting the main heroine, is about anyone but the main heroine.
I hate this people with MY SOUL. Cloud is the protagonist NOT ZACK and Aerith is the female protagonist NOT TIFA. I just hate how they ignore Cloud's history or feelings just for their extremely obsession with Zack and Tifa. I still blame SE for creating Crisis Core, its just a game that we didnt need. My best friend played CC first, she loves Zack but hates Cloud. Its so freaking annoying.

Developers in interview mentions that this song will probably be interpreted wrong and some people might not know how to take it. If you knew who clouds is you would know that both Aerith and Zack are his two unforgivable sins. He gets extreme guilt over not being there for both Zack and Aerith. Which makes sense that he's talking about both Zack and Aerith in this song. This song plays during the ending of remake when zack appears with cloud and crosses path with cloud and Aerith. This song also plays in sector six. For Cloud, they were people whom he can never forget.
