Thank you for your support, all your pumpkins turned out beautiful! 😊
Thank you! I love your pumpkins! 🎃
I followed your method of using toliet paper roll for the chrysalis to attach. 2 did 2 didn't. They look perfect but are not attached. Any help you can offer?? Thanks
When you say 2 didn't attach, what do you mean? Did you make sure they wercoe ready? I still give food until they purge, coming up questions about black v vs then they go into the toilet roll and their make a sling and stay like me that until they go into a chrysalis, usually within 24 hours.
@dksgardenoasis They looked like they were ready. They formed what looked like perfect chrysalis. But did not generate a sling or attach to the paper roll. So, 2 perfect looking chrysalis but laying under the roll on the bottom of the enclosure.
Did you have the roll vertical? If they formed a chrysalis they still might be okay. Btw i think I'm going to do a Q & A video soon about the black swallowtails.
How do i remove if they attach tomy enclosure
Unfortunately i don't have any to demonstrate currently. But i gently pull from the silk pad and then slip into a "pillow" or safety pin the silk to the enclosure. I have left them on the bottom as well if i had no silk to secure and they've emerged great. I put it close to where they can crawl up the side of the enclosure. Good luck!
Look!
Are you wanting me to see something or just commenting on the caterpillar going i to its chrysalis?
Hi! Thank you for this video! First time caterpillar host. Can you please tell me how long in takes for the caterpillar to make its chrysalis from the time it "hangs itself up" in the toilet paper roll? He's 20+ days old and I placed it 48 hours ago and he is still just in the stiffened, hanging form (silk pad) without a chrysalis. I am checking twice a day. Also, if I overwinter in cold garage, Zone 6A Michigan, do I need to mist them, and how often?
Depending on temperature it usually is 2 days. I'll bet it will be in a chrysalis tomorrow. Let it harden a day before putting in its pillow. I do not mist at all until spring when i bring indoors to wake them up. Make sure they're hanging in the garage to make sure mice don't get to them. Good luck!
@@dksgardenoasis Thank you!!! You are such a gem. I hope this works. Fingers crossed! :)
You're most welcome!
@@dksgardenoasis I made a little sleeping bag for the one that has now created a chrysalis :) Just waiting on one more to finish feasting!
@@moderncoloring-jenniferzim6122 fantastic! They will wake up next spring !
How do you handle the ones you put in the pillow in spring since they're not attached?
In the spring i have them in my vege pod . The female lays eggs and when the hatch they eat the dill/fennel I have planted in the vege pod. They make their chrysalis on the cover of the vege pod or stalks of the dill/fennel. Then they emerge i release them. If i bring one inside to record the life cycle i put dill in tubes of water. They make a chrysalis in the enclosure and I release when they emerge. I only put them in the "pillow" in late August for the caterpillars I think will overwinter.
Yayyy! So exciting 😃
Next up going in a chrysalis!
❤
Thank you!
You're a lifesaver this is my first time raising this species thanks for helping me <3 (Do u know at what tempreture they will go into a overwinter state? im not sure if these pupa will emerge now or next spring as its still pretty warm here)
What zone are you? I'm 6 A and all caterpillars that went in pupas from August on overwintered. It's not temps it's how much daylight is what determines whether they emerge or not. I wait until til October 1st then hang in my garage until til May.
@@dksgardenoasis Im in zone 7 Pennsylvania would that mean that my caterpillars might still emerge?
@ryanzanimations9298 I'm not positive but you should be experiencing shorter days so i would assume these will overwinter. Because if they did emerge they wouldn't have time to lay more eggs that would emerge before your 1st frost.
By the way we're still in the high 80s here and they will still overwinter at this point.
@@dksgardenoasis ahh ok Thank you so much tho <3
Great share ❤️ thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I did black swallowtails this year 2024, for the first time.
That's fantastic! How did everything go for you?
That's neat to have a garden set aside for soup vegetables! I think I might try doing that this next season!
You should! It was so fun and yummy!!!
I have about 25 caterpillars on a parsley plant near a hand rail. How can I encourage them to make their chrysalis on the rail?
Hello! You really can't force them to make a chrysalis in a certain place. They definitely do their own thing finding a place to make a chrysalis.
Sun conure, domestic depending on where you live ❤
Thank you for your comment. I'm in Illinois and they definitely are not wild here. So either someone let it go or it escaped.
@@dksgardenoasis Google parrots in Chicago. I'm in Illinois also
@@robincarberry9238 I've heard of monk parakeets in Chicago but these were larger and looks slightly different. The person who posted above seems like that is what it is. Definitely out of place.
@@dksgardenoasis agree, most likely escaped his home...
I just realized you posted both comments . But I'm thinking your 1st comment was right on.
I had never seen these before. Didnt know they existed. I threw a butterfly and hummingbird seed mix into a few beds and I got 2 of these. Hands down my new favorite flower for the season.
Oh I love this plant. It is a must have to attract all kinds of pollinators.
I love spring the beginning of new year !!!!❤
Absolutely! New beginnings! Thanks for watching!☺️
@@dksgardenoasis thank you, hoping you are having great harvest…. Do you ever exchange seeds.? I had the luck to have precious metals, and they are doing great, but I have an American finch killing my petals☹️.. anyway would love to have the unicorn variety.. please let me know if you do. Thank you for replying…located in northern VA
@rscalise2011 I'm going to try and collect seeds this year, but like you other birds are going to town on them. I'm going to put a mesh bag over them and I'll let you know. And i believe floret is having an online class to learn how to collect them🙂
I have cosmos first time this year. I love them!
I love the wispiness of them.
Great video! Oh Sadie is beautiful!
Thanks Vicky!
Beautiful!
Thanks! I've tried growing them for 3 years! I guess 3rd times a charm.
I was surprised and happy to find lots of swallowtail caterpillars all over my big old overgrown parsley plant this year. I live in north Florida. One of the chrysalis fell off its branch and onto the ground during a rainstorm. I picked it up and put it in a Tupperware (no lid) but now what should I do? I have raised monarchs and I know they have to hang. I want to make sure this butterfly emerges ok.
Check out my overwintering UA-cam videos. Even though they might not overwinter, this is what i do when they fall off as well. Good luck!
Love your garden!
Thank you ! Wish i had more land like you to play with. I'm kinda limited in my yard. It was great seeing you and keep sending pics of your gardens! Hope you get that pond! I'll come and visit!!!
welcome back. Yes!!! Earwigs are insane. I have dozens and dozens of swamp milkweed and earwigs are all over them. We didn’t have many cicadas this year.
Thanks for the welcome back. Cicadas were awful, but I was glad to get away from them for 3 weeks until they were gone. Then I come back and the earwigs are all over my milkweed. I've never had them on there. The poor monarchs never catch a break. No wonder they have to lay so many. So many predators!
@@dksgardenoasis That’s so true! I managed to find and save one monarch caterpillar only to have it go into chrysalis stage and turn black by day 5 😢😭
😫😥
Thank you for sharing, beautiful
You're welcome! New Zealand snd Australia are beautiful countries.
My black swallowtail have not emerged and it’s been 19 to 21 days so far they’ve been in their cocoon. They’re turning a yellow in spots when they were brown. Is that normal or should I be concerned? Stressing out.
I had one of mine take almost 2 years, but those are the late chrysalis. Did u raise it indoors as an egg or caterpillar? It could have been parasitized by a wasp. You may see something emerge from the chrysalis . In this case i would separate if possible in a separate enclosure for a few more days. Either the butterfly will emerge or unfortunately if it was parasitized the caterpillar is dead and is being fed by the wasp or other insect that invaded the chrysalis or caterpillar. It happens unfortunately when they're not brought in as eggs. Hope this helps. Good luck!
@@dksgardenoasis they were raised indoors from a caterpillar that I found on my dill and parsley. Thanks for replying.
@@traceyhall1097 sometimes wasps do lay eggs on the caterpillar. They grow normally , go into a chrysalis and they unfortunately they die. Don't give up hope yet. Just separate if you can.
Very helpful 😊
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Dolphine try protecte you from something
No they like swimming in the wake of the at. It's like a massage. 🐬
Hi Debbie, I have question about Black swallowtail butterflies. I have a large tent where I am hosting 30 caterpillars, most of them have gone into Chrysalis. 3 of them went into chrysalis on top of another chrysalis. Basically, they attached themselves onto another chrysalis. Will this be a problem when the first swallowtail emerges? I am afraid it may be constricted by the weight of the other ones and it won't hatch. Also, if it does emerge will this put the other ones in danger since their support will be gone if the butterflies emerges. I hope you can shine some light on this issue. Thank you! Claudia
Those darn swallowtails have a tendency to do that. Generally, I try to move them when it looks like they are going to do that. But since they're already in their chrysalis, hopefully one will emerge first and you can gently remove the emerged chrysalis off the other one. If it looks like they both can emerge from the top just leave them alone. Good luck!
@@dksgardenoasis Thank you. I tried moving one of them but I was afraid to squeeze it to hard. I guess I will learn what to do and what happens once they hatch. Thanks again!!!
In New Zealand?
Actually this was in Australia. I've been traveling to both countries.
This was actually near Melbourne, Australia.
This is awesome! My daughter and i found one today, and had been gifted a butterfly habitat- we've been looking up everything we can and your video has been the most accurate, helpful and informative. Thank you!
You are most welcome! Glad it helped. They are awesome to watch grow. Have fun!!! 🦋
Lucky you! What kinda plugs are you using for the cuttings?
Thank you. The plugs are called "Root "Riots".and a propagation cube . See attached. www.google.com/search?q=root+riots&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari
Why do you need to protect the caterpillar
Monarchs are incredibly endangered
Wasps and birds will eat them. Only about 5% of monarchs reach the last larval instar due to predation.
@@sherylw.5105 I honestly didn’t know this I remember reading about them when I was younger dude thank you for letting me know
@@Westbound100 thank you for explaining too
@@Westbound100thank you for letting me know about this issue
Very interesting video
Glad you think so! It's my way of protecting them while keeping them outside.
I brought mine in and he fell while he was in the J position before he managed to do a chrysalis and I’m wondering if he will survive or not? he’s safe from predators because he’s in my house.
Thank you for your question. It does happen and they are quite adaptable. You can either place near the edge of your enclosure so it can crawl up to dry or place in what a call a butterfly pillow. See my videos for how to make one. But basically all you need is a paper toilet roll and a paper towel. Cut a piece of toilet roll and staple a folded paper towel onto the piece of cardboard. Place chrsalis in the pillow, attach to an enclosure and the chrysalis will emerge with no problem! Good luck!
@@dksgardenoasis thank you for you help.
Your garden looks beautiful! Sorry to hear your neighbor spays. Happy Gardening!
Thank you Alicia. It's a work in progress. And yes, sad because he thinks because the spray is organic it's okay and it's not. I don't think it's okay period...for creatures and humans.😔
I plant them every spring. Beautiful !
I’ve planted 21 varieties this year. Arabian Night has taken off. Ivanetti and Thomas Edison are late for the party.
Nice! I can't wait to see all of mine. Arabian nights is a beauty!😊
Oh no nature. Build some more roads and destroy nature. Tell me you are american without tell me
I don't destroy anything including cicadas. I leave them be but they are extremely loud and don't respect your personal space and fly right into your face lol. If you knew me, you know I love nature and don't do anything to harm them. In fact, I'm known in the neighborhood as "Snow White" where I welcome any creature large or small.
Beautiful!!!! I can't wait! This is my first year planting them, they haven't bloomed yet but I'm SO excited for them to. Thanks for sharing. ❤
They are a pollinator magnet! What until you see what they bring to your garden! Keep me posted!
I have not tried this yet but really enjoyed seeing your process! Hope you have a wonderful trip. Happy Gardening to you! xoxo
Thanks Alicia.. i thought I'd give it a try. 🤞 it works!

What are u saying here?
I am going to give your advice on plants a try for the first time. Thanks
Yes, give them a try. Thanks for watching!
I did exactly as you said and today 30 April the swallowtail emerged. What should I do now, do I just put sugar water saucer and paper towel into the cage or let it go today. It is only 10c. Please reply ASAP. I am in Ontario Canada
Let them go! Yay! Right on time! She/He will now look for a mate. They like to be let go asap. Give them a couple hours to dry off and if it's flitting around the cage they're ready to go! Great job! I'm waiting for mine to wake up! :)
Also, they don't need nectar right away. There made job is to mate now. And after 24 hours it will find nectar from whatever is blooming now.
Sorry I just saw it's 50F/10C. What's the future forecast? If it's sunny, I would let it go-. If it looks warmer tomorrow, let it go tomorrow. Either way let them go in the next 24 hours regardless. They will find shelter. Pick the best sunny day and let them go. They will not need nectar like I said the 1st 24 hours.
Thank you so much for the speedy reply, this is my very first Swallowtail ever. Looking forward to more I hope, but in the meantime I will be looking out for Monarch eggs when my milkweed show later in May
No problem. Good luck. They'll be more on the way. It's just the beginning. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Happy Spring!
