A beautiful gravel ride to the famous Rocamadour turned out to be quite a challenge. I would suggest to ride a wide tyre!

Rondje Abcoude Hilversum Maarssen

Sweden gravel ride #2

Riding in these remote parts means you have to connect tracks with a bit of offtrack ways to connect to the next section of roads to make a nice round trip. Unfortunately, the last of these paths was my undoing: a branch got into my derailleur and broke the dropout, effectively ending my ride. Luckily it was a few miles from where i started so it didn't spoil the day, but it did spoil the rest ...
Denmark 2023 gravel ride #2

I didn't expect so much heavy offroad terrain on this ride, north of the capital of Denmark. I had to backtrack a lot to find the track which was not ridden all that often, and resulted in me having to clear my derailleur of weeds a few times. A beautiful ride nonetheless.

A beautiful quiet and rough ride through southern Sweden. It is such a joy to ride here in nature with almost no one around. Although i have ridden this route before i failed to load it into my bryton so i had to stop regularly to get my bearings.

Summer holiday 2023 gravel ride #1 - Denmark MTB trail

This was my introduction to MTB trails. I didn't expect it to be a trail in the first place so it was quite a surprise, but i liked it a lot. Takes a lot more time to ride and requires a lot of constant focus. Had to stop once or twice to take in the beautiful surroundings, otherwise i would have missed it.

Nice evening ride into the evening. It is cooling down quite rapidly when the sun is going down, a clear sign that the summer is over. This might be one of the last comfortable rides this year... 68k @ 30kph - route: Haarzuilens - Kockengen - Teckop - Wilnis - Waverveen - Nessersluis - Amstelhoek - de Hoef - Noorden - Woerdense Verlaat

Very nice ride without any complaints. 90k @27kph - Route: Nieuwegein - Werkhoven - Driebergen - getting lost in Hyde Park - Austerlitz - Soesterberg - Soesterduinen - Pijnenburg - Hollandse Rading - Hilversum - Tienhoven - Breukelen - Vleuterweide

    Thanks for the video, how is the heat build up while grinding with these 3M belts?

    • @schande
      @schande 6 років тому

      my personal opinion is that i am able to take of more stock before the knife starts overheating, but i usually dunk the knife in water regardless of the temperature so i don't have a unbiased verdict about it. it does take off way more in the same amount of time than what i'm used to with other belts though, but that has a pricetag.

    one of the proper ways to heat treat d2 steel, is to wrap it inside a stainless steel quenching foil with pieces of paper, or small wood chips. The paper or wood burns and consumes any oxygen inside the foil. Bring your forge up to a forging temp at full and put your foil wrapped blade in. When it come to a yellow forge heat and is glowing, leave it in and allow the steel to soak in the forge heat for no less than 30 minutes. After the heat soak, use your tongs to withdraw the steel from the forge. Immediately place the wrapped steel on your anvil and allow it to fully cool. Unwrap the steel and examine it carefully, looking for cracks and deformations. It should no be at full hardness if this was properly implemented. To test its hardness, take a 6" or 8" steel file and file the steel. The file should slip and skid across the steel without biting in. When the testing is done, the steel can be normalized or tempered for optimal edge holding. D-2 steel can be tempered the same way as O-1, W-2, or other high carbon steels are tempered for optimal edge holding ability. Thanks for sharing.

      and thank you, Sir, for your extensive reply. i've got the foil now and a really nice ceramic oven, and made some knives with it, though i must say, why the long soaking time? half an hour seems so much to me, especially since D2 is so hard to grind and bound to warp when heat treated... thanks again.

    • @alaskanfrogman
      @alaskanfrogman 7 років тому

      Your goal with heat treating d2 steel is to bring it to a forging color while wrapped in stainless steel foil. Depending on the size and thickness of the steel, it should soak in the fire at full heat for at least 30 minutes, so that the heat penetrates through the foil and into your item to be heat treated and hardened. After about 30 minutes, the steel inside the foil will have reached its critical temp of a "nonmagnetic stage" and can be safely removed from the fire. Then it must be allowed to completely cool while still inside the foil for best results. There is a specific formula for heat treating d2 steel, but this method I described works rather well. For my personal needs, I did not find it necessary to do the heat fire soak for as long as prescribed. Some pieces would require remaining in the heat for no less than an hour and even as long as 4 hours if the steel is large enough. The size of steels that I use typically aren't that big or heavy, and so I can heat for a much shorter time. I know that 30 minutes might seem like a long time to keep a piece of steel in the fire, but is what's required to properly heat treat D2 steel, which is an air quenching metal. I learned the hard way that because "D2 Steel" is an air quenched, or air hardened steel, that it cannot and will not harden properly with oil. Water introduces too much shock stress that could cause it to become too brittle and could even shatter. Even if it does not crack there will always be visible cracks if quenched in water. The method I described works very well. Try heat treating different pieces of D2 steel. Experiment with it and find the formula and heat time that best suits your needs. I only shared what worked for me, but it might not necessarily work for you. Good Luck!

    You seem more than ready to build yourself one of these babies. I am privileged as well, my father has a metal construction company where we assembled it and with all the connections at my disposal [watercutter man, electromotor service company, parts and bits, etc.]. Very good that you make your first knife by hand, i think that is the best way to get into this. I started early this year and it consumes just about all my free time. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Ah, the first steps of a knifemaker, i remember it well. i am jealous and not at the same time of where you stand right now. please let me suggest to make your first knife first, before you invest a lot of time into a serious belt grinder using ordinary tools like files and such [Gough Custom has a movie about that] i know you're not listening :) but that process will give you a lot of valuable information, and if you like this manly and instant gratification giving hobby in the first place.

    they are. they can set you back $100 a wheel if you're not paying attention... i mounted cheap manual forklift [we call it pallet truck in the netherlands] wheels to mine, only $20 a pop. i've seen contact wheels [the big one in the front that you touch with the metal] for no less than $400. check beaumont metal works if you don't believe me. the cheap wheels are still going strong after 6 months though. btw: does your friend have a turn bank [to machine axels]? if so, you can make your own.

    Hi Barry, i used the EERF grinder plans from Wilmont Grinders, you should find it on the web [cannot use URL's here]. You can use these plans for free to [water or laser] cut all the parts out of a 1/2" slab of steel and put it all together without having to weld anything. i have some more video's about the grinder on my knife making channel: search for user 'gemeengoed' Then you have to get a power plant and some driving wheels [believe me those are EXPENSIVE] and you're good to go.
