Lesson 9: Justice and Fairness In this lesson, I've learned that the concept of equality should be applied to all beings who are capable of understanding equality and who have the characteristic of personhood. Justice and fairness are concepts or notions that are hard to define without taking the help of the other. Justice and fairness are talked about in the same breath, and we have come to accept that what is just is also fair and that to be seen as fair, we must be just. However, all justice is not fair, and all that is fair may not be just.
Lesson 8: Utilitarianism In all that is happening in the world, it is best to practice utilitarianism. Being a utilitarian, you believe that an action is morally right if it maximizes overall well‐being and happiness. Mill's take on this is what really stuck in me as he mentioned that to seek my happiness by limiting my desires, rather than attempting to satisfy them. For him, it is not quantity that should be measured but the quality of the pleasure felt - and it's a practice that can make the world a better place.
Lesson 7: Deontology Kantian Theory is what remained in me in this lesson. I've learned that there are 2 tests that can identify if an action is good or not which are universalizability test and treatment of humans as an end and not as a means. It is our duty as humans to have a positive response to both of these tests. In this way, we can say that we are doing what is right for everyone and not just morally right for us.
Lesson 5: Ethics: Through Thick and Thin This lesson taught me more about pluralism and other takes on ethics and how globalization has exposed humanity to challenge our belief system. With all of the struggles, problems, and dilemmas we are facing given that our society composes of many generations - We must understand that these differences can be a strength in our humanity once we analyze it deeply and once we address all moral and ethical issues in a humane manner.
Lesson 6: The Ethics of Sentiments, Reason and Courage I learned that feelings and reason actually complement each other - that the function of emotions is to fill in the gaps left by pure reason. I also agree that the good of the man is a character trait that manifests in the habitual performance of a set of behavioral cues. It does not end with kindness per se and just doing what feels right, but we must have the moral courage and moral reasoning to prove that it is right.
Gaspar, Sean Patrick Ryan HUM039 B36 After this lesson broadened my mind, I realized that this idea is what I need to do. People who practice virtue ethics are more likely to maintain personal and interpersonal connections vital to their well-being. It is important to have the knowledge, consciously choose the acts, and choose them according to your character. Good acts must be deliberately selected for the right reasons. In order to live according to moral principles, one must develop virtues. thank you sir
PERALTA, DEXTER JHUNNIEL HUM039 B36 The lesson i learned in this topic, The Virtue Ethics, is that being a good man should start from your inner self. Like It should be a habit in day to day basis. Happiness can attain by balancing the concept of being a virtues man. Everything should be balance in order to have a complete happiness. Accept failures and downfall then make it your motivation to keep going on in life. Never ever give up, there's always a solution in every problems in this world. Also, staying positive in life can give us the pure happiness. True happiness is appreciating everything in your life. Thank you, sir!
Robelen Bedia - B36 The lecture made me reflect on my actions and emotions. I've learned that kindness is also considered a virtue. It is an excellence of character that drives ethical decisions. Kindness it's not just a one-time thing but it is a habit being nurtured every day. People who are kind act that way not for any reward or even recognition but because it is the right way to behave and the way a person wishes others would act towards them. Virtues are significant in our lives because they are the fundamental characteristics required for our wellbeing and happiness. Understanding the value of virtues will help us communicate with one another more effectively and to understand and accept one another.
GIANEROSE DANIELLE V. MAGIMOT - B36 I've learned from this lesson that moral virtue is characterized as a propensity to behave morally and as a middle path between the vices of insufficiency and excess. We develop moral greatness through habit and practice rather than logic and instruction. To be virtuous, one must approach both pleasure and misery with the proper perspective. Our ultimate goal-God-is well matched to Aquinas' virtues, hence they are referred to as theological since they not only approach God, as any virtue deserving of the name must, but also go out to Him. Everything must remain in balance to avoid upsetting nature's flow. God gave us instructions in his holy books on how to live a good life, which brings us closer to him. He advises us to avoid drowning in our vices, to constantly act kind, regardless of how others treat us, and that by being kind to others, we can influence their behavior and bring about positive changes in their lives. We must carry out God's will in order to reflect God's holiness in our lives because we are His tools.
Marcelino, John Luis C. (B36) I have learned from this lesson that like life, virtue is a constant effort. The road to being good is one of continuous practice and application and of trying to achieve consistent betterment of the self. It is walking the fine line between excess and deficiency and that though it is clear and simple on paper, it is always never the case as we face decisions throughout our life that challenges our view of the world and sometimes that trying to choose to be good is so hard against the face of an easy choice.
Fausto, Jhon Lhord Ric (B36) What I have learned from this lesson. Is that anything in life possible with someone to support and teach you about your actions. as a result of you're initial actions you will be the one responsible for it. So do it with humility and respect for the elderly from you.
Renz Bryle M. Malabanan - B36 To be good or to be bad. To be justified or to be false. How does one begin to comprehend the intricate structures of ethics, morality, and virtues? As Aristotle had said, people should strive to achieve a Telos - Eudemonia (happiness). To do one good action is easy, but to repeatedly commit actions of kindness is difficult. In achieving virtues, as Aristotle had stated, one must create a set of habits. These habits do not occur after just one night, but is a set of good practices done throughout the entirety of one's human life. This is what I had learned in the discussion conducted by Professor Valenzuela. To be morally good with exceptional virtues, people must first establish a firm set of habits that will lead them to their ultimate goal, Eudemonia.
Versoza, Maria Cecilia D. - B36 I have learned in this lesson the importance of virtue as a habit. Bringing emphasis to the idea, it is easy to proclaim that we are a virtue in some situations, yet its discipline is the challenge. However, we ought to master its discipline because it is a stepping stone in achieving our purpose as individual and as part of the community. A golden mean between courage and cowardice is essential to maintain balance. Hopefully, I will be able to apply all these things in my daily life.
Carmel Kim Balbieran - B36 In this lecture video, I've learned that living a virtuous life is indeed a great challenge. As a person that is very impulsive and does not stick to habits, I see it as a challenge to form virtuous habits that may have been hindering me from feeling true contentment and happiness. From this, I now know what to do to achieve Eudamonia, because everyone deserves such happiness, but only one could achieve it with one's efforts only.
What a fun and informative discussion! I really connected with the principle of Golden Mean, the balance of extremes. It's important that we know how to keep everything in balance. This is the most effective way to keep yourself grounded, to be able to observe everything around you without being judgmental, or not having a care at all, but to act on a situation based on virtues and not vices. With this discussion, I was able to know and Identify whether my virtues are aligned to have that "balance", which will help me become a more virtuous person.
Lesson 5: Ethics Through Thick and Thin In today's world, I can confidently say that religion divides us more than it unites us. This is because some religious members hate and despise other religions while calling them filthy, ignorant, terrorists, etc. I have personally experienced this before when I went to small Christian gatherings where religious people made fun of Muslims and boasted about their religion. If you could hear the words they said, it would leave you with guilt and confusion as to why a religion focused on loving all of God's creations hates those who have done nothing but believe. I just feel it. Lesson 6: The Ethics of Sentiment Reasons and Moral Courage I learned the value of discussion in this course. When faced with a problem, resist the need to react emotionally and use moral debate instead. Moral courage is something else I have learned. It is better to face the truth, accept the results and do the right thing than to hide from our mistakes and worries. In summary, we should develop moral courage and have learned that moral thinking is important in all situations. Emotions can have a big impact on our decisions, and overflowing emotions can guide us in the right direction, but in most cases can lead to wrong decisions. Therefore, always ensure your emotions where you feel comfortable enough to make a decision. Once decided, it cannot be undone. Lesson 7: Deontology In this lesson, I learned about deontological ethics, Kant theory, and the meaning of mercy. The most important lesson I have learned is that the results are not important as long as our intentions are correct, and we have also realized that it is our responsibility to help others. No matter who that person is, we should stop doubting ourselves and help them (based on duty) as deontological ethics suggests. Eventually I found that I decided whether the behavior was good or bad. Therefore, even if we do everything right, it is not considered a good activity if our intentions are terrible. That is why it is important to have good intentions. Lesson 8: Utilitarianism In the words of John Stuart Mill “I have learned to seek my happiness by limiting my desires, rather than in attempting to satisfy them.” , I realized that the secret of happiness is not to satisfy desires, but to limit them. I just came up with the truth, as the bliss of desire is fleeting while the bliss of the mind is remembered forever. But I do not agree a little that limiting our desires brings us happiness. Because happiness can be found by living at that moment and accepting whatever happens, whether it suits our desires or not. If you start analyzing your desires rather than trying to limit them, you can do anything to make it easier for you to be happy. Lesson 9: Justice and Fairness To fully understand justice, we must enjoy the same rights as others. A person's basic freedom should always exist and be respected. When our government is corrupt, it is difficult to obtain true justice and due process takes a long time. Justice rarely comes soon these days. This is difficult to achieve in today's society, as people are easily fooled by money and other mundane goals, and as a result, people are not fairly tried.
Kurt Edison F. SAmonte/B36 In this lesson i have learned the true meaning of virtue and this must be done as a habit and you be consistent in doing this not just when you like to. I also learned that we came from God and this lesson made it very clear for me to understand. and lastly I learned the importance of humility and its role for us to achieve happiness.
Umantod, Chad C. - B36 After watching the lecture video, I came to the realization that my way of life is not the right way of living. I am living a cowardly life. I am too afraid to try new things because I am afraid to fail. The worst part is that I did not realize that this was becoming my habit. A habit that forms vices in imbalance according to Aristotle’s Golden Mean. If I continue this way of living, I will not be genuinely happy. Although I can say that I am happy at this moment, this happiness is just a short term. This happiness that came from useless things is not true happiness. It will eventually vanish. But now, I would be able to change this. I must seek a balanced life and form habits that will help me pursue and become a more virtue person and help others instead of using and trampling them. Addition with that, I must always remember that God will always be the key to a true happiness.
Lachica, John Lesrter T. - B36 Upon finishing the lesson, the most important thing that I have learned the most is how important humility is in our lives. As we hear the word humility what comes into mind first is being humble. However, if we look deeper into it humility can have a lot of benefits in our daily lives. As we humble ourselves we can be open to others feedbacks or opinions which could be very helpful in our life. We must realize that nobody's perfect and there will always be something that we don't know or there will always be a room for improvement. No matter how many things we have achieved in life we must not forget being humble because our achievements could improve more if we won't be arrogant just because of our achievements.
HARLY DE LOS SANTOS, AWAT - B36 This video taught me that some of us chase the things we want/the things that make us happy as we get older rather than money as we get older. It encourages us to seek pleasure and teaches us more about who we really are. It also helps us develop our character.I should always do good things regardless of the circumstance and have a balanced outlook toward other people if I want to be referred to as a "good person." In addition, I've discovered that helping others and being kind to them are the best ways for me to find happiness.
Mikhaela Kezziah A. del Mundo - B36 I have learned that our daily decisions are influenced by a system of ethics that keeps us from taking actions that may result in unfair outcomes. Our desire to be ethical drives us to speak the truth, uphold our word, and assist people in distress. Additionally, ethical principles like honesty, reliability, and responsibility help people connect with ethical dilemmas more efficiently by allowing us to recognize and ignore things that go against our moral compass without harming others. Furthermore, I've understood the power of ethics and how establishing strong moral principles may allow us to live purposefully. On the other hand, Basic ethical principles can make our lives more fulfilling on a personal and professional level, whether in our relationships with friends, families, coworkers, or other social circles. Due to pressure to make different choices, we are regularly challenged regarding how committed we are to upholding ethical standards. For example, peer pressure can make it increasingly challenging for young people to behave correctly when conflicting interests exist. Workplace pressures may also cause us to say and do things against our moral principles. This is crucial to remember that our choices affect both ourselves and others because we are constantly faced with choices that affect the quality of people's lives. Therefore, we must be responsible for our deeds.
Ethan Mark A. Garrido, Section B36 I've learned from this lesson that being humble can actually help you find happiness. Whether in school or in real-world settings, humility has assisted me in learning new things in life. It aided in my realization that not everything in this world is about me because there are so many other individuals. Even if I am extremely successful, it's crucial to always keep your feet on the ground. Because if you don't, you'll end up in a situation where even your closest friends or family members might hurt you.
Russel Jay Cruz (B36) I learned from this video that virtue help us to reflect I had done in my whole life, It help me to reflect on my early years and the lessons that my parents and instructors established in me. It is also helped to mold my character into the person I am now.
Carvajal, Donnah Faye C. - B36 This lecture made me aware of the significance of virtue in every person's life. It is important that we know how to practice consistency in everything that we do. In doing good things in life towards other people, we must remember not to wait anything in return. In this way, we can say that we truly attain the ultimate goal in life which is eudemonia. "The Golden Mean" was also mentioned in this lecture and I can say that it is one of the remarkable lessons for me. In life, we must remember that everything must lie in the middle because any excess and deficiency in life will do no good result.
As a reflection from what I have learned from the discussion, I have realized that for a person being able to always have and practice ethical virtues, it will be a huge factor and a steppingstone that will lead oneself into living well and be happy in their life. It would be of one’s great quality to be always kind and helpful to others may it be with our fellow humans especially with our family and friends, animals, and the nature, but not in a way that others will use and take advantage of you to achieve their specific goal and meet their needs in life without gratitude and to the point that they were abusing you and will make yourself feel bad. All these of course, and with the help of other characteristics such as having humility in communicating and connecting to others for a good purpose when it comes to learning and living life, practicing obedience while knowing and acknowledging one’s own wrong doing accepting that they are at fault and should correct it, and having strong faith will be great to have in being able to live a good and happy life, and be able to connect oneself not just physically but also spiritually to the others and the world. -GERALDINE D. ALCANTARA (SECTION B36)
Kenneth Matthew M. Legaspi (B36) This has given me the opportunity to be reminded to always smile with joy by practicing chastity, obedience, faith, and love. Being humble despite all that we have accomplished is a decision, for sure. deciding to always resist temptations since God wants us to be pure. the decision to obey as a citizen, son, and student. the belief in ourselves, especially in God, that we will overcome challenges with the help of Him. Of course, there is also our affection for one another. We can, in fact, make our faces naturally smile by embracing these characteristics.
