My dad worked at U.S.STEEL 43 years. I myself worked here 38 yesrs in grinders, 1 skelp, wirebuilding, then Found my home i Pipe mill lab. I was PROUD to work there. I retired in 2006, hate to see another over seas company screw our mill up AGAIN .

me 1/8/68 - 1/8/98 - i got on the apprenticeship in '69 as a pipefitter when i finished i was sent to the Coke Plant because i was one of the youngest - stayed there until we shut it down forever - then back to the main shop #1Pipe Shop & covered the whole mill from one end to the other & all in between & unplugged many a toilet in the mills & big shots offices too - me - i was known as "The Midget" - so sad a way of life for many years & many families & it is all gone - when this ended - so did Lorain , Ohio

My dad Steve Horvath worked here as a boilermaker, he did get asbestosis, and died in 2012 at the age of 64. I miss him every day.

This video, along with one done by Bruce Bishop, concentrates on the blast furnace wing of a much more expansive steel mill. I worked here for 5 years straight until I was laid off early in 1982. There's a LOT of missing pieces since then. While I appreciate the effort put into any video of this complex, I'd really appreciate video of the rest of this plant. Nice job Michael.

hi. by 'the rest of the plant', do you mean more to the east? Was that a rolling section? I see inventory there now. When did this last run or was on hot idle if you happen to know? Thank you! It looks like a LOT of pieces are missing.

@@CuriousEarthMan "more to the east", yes. The production side of Pearl Ave. all the way past Grove Ave, and to the Black River. There may not be much to see now, but this entire plant was one busy place for so many years. Four blast furnaces where only two remain. The entire coke plant is gone, and so many other landmarks. I also see a lot of additional buildings around the BOP shop, I suppose that had something to do with the continuous caster that came in long after I left this area.

@@johns4384 I think the rolling mills are still in use. They just get their slabs from elsewhere in the system now.

Nice filming! Sadly it's barely a shell of what it once was.
