simply, i'm not gonna say that u need it in the osi model or the switch have to use it ,but why did the ieee or whatever company created two addresses what was the probleme that they have faced ?the ip address has info about the network u can't use the mac address to know which network are u sending to , so routers wont know whats the next router or domain to send to get to that lan , then the question is that why people didnt just use the ip address to connect between the routers , lans etc when it covers all network / devices info , the answer is inside a local area network to reduce the processing of the intermediate device(switch ,hub...) the solution is that intermediate doesnt need to go through all the osi model it just can go through layer 2 so its faster thats where it came the mac address
