    And don't forget the button lamp from The Long Hard Winter book of Laura Ingall's. Axle grease smeared onto a china saucer, a button wrapped in cloth and tied over the button, the excess fabric forming a wick. I'm sure it smoked but it gave them light to read and cook by.

    No disrespect at all, but I don’t think it was stressed enough, that in your thumbnail, you mention that these fuels are for “emergencies,” and not for every day use-at least that’s how I interpreted it. Diesel fuel may work, but given enough time in a small to medium sized room, it will smell like a truck stop very quickly-diesel fuel is smokey. An Amish gentleman who is very experienced with fuel lamps told me that they use Low odor mineral spirits in their lamps. It’s spendy but very clean burning, no smell and doesn’t carbon up the glass on the lamp.

      No disrespect taken. Thank you for your suggestion on the thumbnail. I have changed it. Yes Diesel can be smokey if the wick is not trimmed (adjusted) correctly. And it needs trimmed often when in use unless one is using a carbon felt wick. I have since found out that on road diesel has more additives in it than off road and that puts off more toxic chemicals. I addressed this in the live stream I did last November on my preparedness channel (Gray Man Prepping) as a follow up to this video. Whenever I mention oil lamps in any live stream or recorded video, I say to stock up on a good quality lamp oil just like any other supply. Thank you for watching and your input. Stay safe and prepared.

    Interesting video, we had a drought for over 2 years we lost a lot of trees in our area. I lost 2 in my yard but that was from Emerald Ash borer which has killed a lot of Ash trees in Mpls/St. Paul area.

      It is the steel used in the knife, some metals will not hold an edge no matter what you use to sharpen them. Keeping the knife ninety degrees to the Sharpal, sides straight up and down, and make a straight pull with just a slight downward pressure should work if the steel in the knife is of good quality.

    You don't want the weed mats around the trees. The best thing to do is place a couple layers of cardboard down before the the chips to get rid of weeds. Those weed mats don't allow the chips to break down into the soil properly.

    • @CamppattonFamilyCompound
      @CamppattonFamilyCompound Місяць тому

      No, you don't want cardboard in your garden. I have found out that the glues and chemicals used in making cardboard are toxic and making it into the food. Also the weeds were gotten rid of before the chips went down. I don't have weed mats. What I have are the tops from the IBC totes that collect the moisture that tries to evaporate from the soil in the summer heat and puts it back into the soil. Once the trees have been established for a couple of years I may remove them and use them with other new trees. Also the white IBC tote tops will reflect the late winter / too early spring heat from the sun, keeping the sap from flowing too soon and causing bark blistering. That is a big problem in this region. As the wood chips start to decompose, I will rake the compost under the tops where it will continue to decompose. You don't want to put the wood chips too close to the tree truck (especially young trees) as it can allow diseases and boring insects to get at the trees.
