There’s nothing quite like seeing a deer in person that you’ve only known through trail camera photos for months or years. It can be a pretty surreal moment. On the opening evening of Ohio's archery season, in the rain, I had that moment. I'd been keeping tabs on a buck I named 'Two Trunks' all summer, monitoring his movements with cameras in a secluded creek bottom. While his behavior was larg...

What is the camo you put on your camera? Thats a cool idea!
Do you carry any kind of insurance that would make a landowner more comfortable with you being on there property and not have to worry about being sued by a hunter that might get injured on their property
The Ohio Revised Code 1533.181: Exemption from liability to recreational users is printed on the Ohio DNR permit slip. I just carry those and will point it out if they are concerned. dam.assets.ohio.gov/image/upload/ohiodnr.gov/documents/wildlife/hunting-trapping/Pub8924_PermissiontoHunt.pdf
I keep my camera in my bino harness with one light strap that stops it falling out if I lean over etc
That’s a great idea!
Nice vest. Not too different then the one I run. I love a good turkey vest! Purpose built, keeps things available and organized 👍👍🦃🇺🇲🙏
Advice on winter hunting. I use a battery powered heating vise to keep my core heat up.👍👍
Awesome video fellas!
Appreciate you watching!
So which do like better. The lone wolf or the tethrd pack? I’m a bigger guy, and have heard the tethrd is tight…
I like the tethrd just because it has more structure and rigidity. Feels better when packing more weight imo. Im 5"11' 205lb. Cant go wrong with either though seems like splitting hairs
Always good to let jakes go imho, but man when they approached and hit that putt, they high tailed it out of there fast. Classic
Awe man! Thats the way it goes sometimes! These hunts make the days you bag one all the more enjoyable!
Definitely one of the best hunt filming videos I’ve seen so far. You think you could do one going over computers, software and editing?
Thank you! That’s a great idea! It will take me a bit to put something like that together but I will definitely do so.
@ That would be awesome! I’ve hunted since I was a kid, got into photography in 2015 or 16, already have a lot of the equipment and figured I might as well put the two together. Haven’t done much videography though, would love to hear some recommendations on software and hardware for editing. I like how in depth you get with it, seems like most guys that self film and make these types of videos are doing it just for the purpose of filming the hunt instead of enjoying the two hobbies combined. Keep it up man
I am a new turkey hunter so just asking to learn not being critical as you are much mor experienced than I and have bagged far more birds.. At 12:30 or so into the video, you call and the tom gobbles back cutting you off. A few seconds later you call again and then he gobbles back again. At that point why did you continue calling? I have heard from some long time turkey hunters like eddir salter, matt dale (dale outdoors) and maybe david hale (of knight and hale calls) have said if you call to turkey and it cuts you off by gobbling back the first time it knows where you are within maybe a 10 to 20 yard circle. If you call again, and it cuts you off a second time its pinpointed you to just a few feet. Maybe even the exact tree. They suggest to stop calling and wait. They said it may take 30 minutes to a few hours , but that tom will go check on some stuff qnd then work its way over right to where you called when he cut you off. They feel continuing to call, or moving after this point will spook or push birds. Since you didn't get this one, reflecting back, do you think it may have worked to cut off the calling and sit still and wait. Or do you think he was out of there either way, so moving and continuing to call was your last ditch effort? Also did you hear him gobble back or notice those 2 gobbles? They were quiet and a lot of times you and others edit *Gobbles* onto screen when a turkey gobbles faintly so viewer can better identify when they called back.
I could definitely hear him gobbling! So you may be right, he definitely knew exactly where I was and I may have had better luck if I stopped calling and sat tight. Looking back I maybe should’ve done just that. It was two years ago lol but I think my thought process was he was with hens and prolly wasn’t coming my way. I wanted to fire him up with the Jake yelps and maybe get him to come look but I think I was just not close enough inside his bubble. That may be why I decided to move closer to him. That advice from the hunters you mentioned is very good advice but every situation is very different. I’ve always had trouble with patience in the turkey woods, I have an aggressive style and every once in a while it works for me lol
@buckeyebowhunter thank you for explaining your reasoning. Your movement could have been what it took to get him. Each situation is truly unique and not all birds behave the same. Thanks for taking the time to reply and doing such a great job on filming these hunts!
5:20 that is story of my life hunting public land most times in san diego 😂
Do you think poachers, some other pressure is causing good spots to dry up? I was a little saddened to see/hear there is still a portion of population who "don't believe in tags or seasons" around the internet and talking with some hunters ive got to meet across different states
I definitely think that can be the case in a lot of areas. I know I deal with high pressure and trespassing on several of the properties I hunt and I definitely don’t make it any easier.
Beautiful bird. Nice work scouting and putting miles in. Well deserved. Best one of the series so far.
Nice work, what a shot.
Nice work. Looking forward to season 2 👍
Congrats boys! Job well done!
Congrats. Locating where the gobble came from is often easier said then done 😅 def a super jake there near full fan, some short spurs, and he was gobbling, or trying at least 😂 Nice work. Public land is generally tough, esp in another state.
This series deserves way more views. I'll share it with anyone I know who is or may be interested in turkey hunting!
I really appreciate it! Ill take all the help I can get! Happy holidays to you and yours!
Thanks for the video. I just purchased a Canon g30 to film deer hunts. What mode/speed to you recommend - 17 mbps, 24 mbps or 35 mbps? I appreciate any insight. Thanks so much!
I would run at the highest you can depending on what your editing computer can handle well and the about of storage you have. If you can get away with 35 do that it will be higher quality. I always try to run my equipment at the highest quality possible even for UA-cam because most people are watching UA-cam on a big screen tv today so when it gets blown up like that I still want it to look good if that makes sense.
@@buckeyebowhunter thanks for your answer. I really appreciate it 👍👍
Awesome stuff, very useful information man! I started solo recording hunts 3 years ago, first year with just my phone, second year with one Gopro, and this year I had 2 Gopro's and my new Sony alpha 7iv. Still have a ton to learn but my video production quality has definitely improved. Looking forward to learning from you man keep it up!
This is one of the best informative self filming videos I’ve seen. Great work man! Subscribed!
Really appreciate it!!
Excellent point about laptop and storage requirements. Hadn't thought of that. You just saved me a decent pile of $$$.
I overlooked it for sure when I started making upgrades! Happy to help!
What kinda throws me for a loop is she did all this practically in complete silence. Not a fighting purr. Putt, cutt.. silent assassin 😂 she was ruthless. Rip to your decoys 😂
Haha that’s true! They are freaking dinosaurs man!
Dang she was a nasty one 😂 came in to show every other hen who is the boss!
Def helpful. Like the narrating over real hunts. Good to show what worked and what didn't
Thanks for the comment! I’m already getting pumped for turkey season and I’m not even done deer hunting yet lol
I love my will primos vest but cool to see other designs. Whatever works for the individual. Hope this has held up and worked well for you, going to watch the in field video next.
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful!!
Got it done, nice job! Great video, keep it rollin!
Thanks for the comment! I’m trying lol. I’ll be in KY later this month with a buck tag in my picked so look out for those vids too! Hope your having some luck
Awesome video, we'll be following along, good luck out there!
Thank you and you too! I subscribed to your channel!!
Congratulations on the deer. Is that 8mm rope your using in the mad rock.
It is 8mm. It’s not recommended though.
There's nothing worse than hiring someone to do work on your house and he shows up with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth as he "talks" around it with a very redneck accent! No difference here!
Good video
Thank you!!
Thank you for the tips, just what I needed to hear!
You're welcome! I hope they help you get your hunt on!
Amen on having hobbies, and finding a sense of purpose. Challenging ourselves makes life better. Not worse!
Thanks for the video I'm 11 and I want to go turkey hunting, and I just wanted to learn about turkey hunting 😂❤🎉🎉
Its a blast! Keep the tradition going. I started this fall in my 30s self taught on youtube and state classes and online resources. Keep learning. I'd suggest a slate or box call. Get any camo you like/can afford and somewhat matches your area you plan to hunt. Learn to sit still in the woods and listen to the birds calling eachother
I'm no expert. But after hunting after some unsuccessful e scouting, id verify you have a traversable path to your goal hunting area. I thought 400 yards would be do-able regardless terrain. Seemed short. I've done 10 mile hikes in 4 hours on trail. Off trail, the terrain I went thru today took an hour to do a quarter mile. Thick brush, no clear path. I didnt even make it the full 400 yards. Got 150 in before realizing I wouldn't even be able to pack out a turkey if I got one where I went. If I zoomed out a bit, 1100 yards past where I entered there is a logging road that lead to the river I was attempting to make it to. Live and learn 😅🤦♂️ experience is a mighty fine teacher. Still had a good time. Body a bit worse for wear, but got eyes and ears on birds. Learned more about my local public huntable land and got a heck of a workout😅
I prefer the 20" doubles. First bought the 20" singles. My opinion, they suck. Too many moving parts. The doubles are way better its night and day
dude just say ohio public land. the title pisses me off.
Why? Are you worried about people discovering the Wayne National Forest?
Awesome footage man. Highs and lows of hunting the rut. I live in southern WVA im hoping to get to hunt Kentucky and Ohio someday good luck man
November 1st is pretty early for a Kentucky rut hunt. I lived there 10 years when I was stationed there rut heats up 2nd and 3rd week. I’m headed back there for my rutcation in 3rd week. Awesome video though.
I think your right! I’ve spoken to a few people from Kentucky and mid November seems like the consensus. May have to move my vacation next year
Like the video, enjoyed everything but don't care for music in a hunting video. That's just me.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the criticism! I like music during montages and trailers but other than that I like to keep the music out of important deer encounters I think are worth sharing. Nothing beats the sound of the woods
I 100% agree. I’m all for artistic expression and you can edit how you like but it’s not for me and did not seem to fit. Great video except for that.
Hey man! Looking to start filming some hunts and I already have quite a bit of camera experience. The only thing I do not have is a camera arm. I will be running a very similar set up. A Sony A7S3 and a 70-200 gm version 1. I also have a much larger fluid head I plan to add the smallrig dh12. I would love to be able to get away with using that camera arm as I hunt I will self film in a saddle and film others out of a saddle. Do you think I could use this arm or would I have to get the pro stiff arm
Hey thanks for the question! Hmm tough to tell you may get a bit of bouncing with the micro triple arm if you’re gonna go with a bigger head like that. It should be able to handle the weight though. I’ve actually been using the SmallRig Lightweight Fluid Video Head with the micro triple arm for most of this year with my A7S3 and it worked really well while being super packable. Hope this helps
Add some affiliate links so we can get them and you can get a little $
I’ll look into it!
What about some type of game bag if you harvest? Is it like deer?
Hey sorry for the late response! I usually just carry the whole turkey out over my shoulder or some turkey vests have a big enough back pocket you can lay the bird in there. Make sure you have some sort of orange on though especially on public land when carrying out a bird! That way you can do all the cleaning and field dressing at camp or at home. Just me.
@buckeyebowhunter i watched all your turkey hunt 101 videos and went on my first hunt yesterday. I bagged myself a beautiful Jake. It was a blast! Thank you so much! I would recommend you do a video on how to gut/pluck it for your 101 series.
Congratulations! Thats so awesome to hear. thank you so much for the suggestion! I will definitely do a video on that in the near future!
The thing on the right side of your head has a terrible glare.
Yeah I quit putting it there lol
Nice Vid. I have a few questions. What picture profile do you use the most with the Sony cameras? Guessing it depends on lighting. With the 24-240 lens, how high are you letting the iso go before you get footage that is unusable? I'm running the A7IV.. It's not an A7S3, but close. Ha!
Hey so sorry for the late response. I usually run P11. In regards to the lens I try to keep it under 3200 but in low light conditions that goes out the window. When filming deer hunts everything is usable lol
What about chestnut acorns? I have a property with white oaks, red oats and chestnuts. I'm wondering what trees to hunt around best for deer to feed off of. Thanks
I’ve never had good luck or seen good sign under chestnut acorns. I’d prioritize the white oaks first. Scout those and look for sign of feeding or rubs and scrapes and hunt it! Deer definitely will prefer white oak acorns 1 to 1
@@buckeyebowhunter Thank you for answering! I found a few trees on this property with mostly white oaks dropping. I found lots of sign around it too. The deer seem to prefer it since the property is mostly smaller pine trees. The pine trees make it thick in there which they love. The white oaks are more prevalent than the red oaks right now so i'll stay close to hunt that.
SMILE!!! What a story and a real Swamp Donkey of a buck. Congratulations Josh. As always. The storyline you put together is top notch! Curt WhiteTAILSDeerHunting
Thanks curt!! Good luck this season!
Epic. Simply epic. 👍🏻
