Had that happen to me. I was a born and raised military kid whose father was career Air Force and grew up learning to adapt and stand up for myself. In my 20's, I worked at a museum that was about two blocks from where I lived. It was a normally quiet, small to mid-size town, with plenty of streetlights that extended to the edge. It was in mid November when it was dark at 5:30, and I usually worked until closing, which was 8:00. I was walking home when I felt something wasn't right about halfway home, so I walked by a store and glanced at a window. There was a man on the opposite side of the street, walking the same direction I was. I then suddenly turned and walked in the opposite direction, and went down some other side streets. Sure enough, he was around, and now on the same side I was.I walked back to where main street was lit the brightest, then suddenly turned and dropped into a defensive fighting stance, fists up and ready, looking at him in the face with the most pissed off "make my day" expression I could manage. He stopped, and as I dropped and pushed my purse against the wall, backed up. I think it was about five minutes of a standoff when he then muttered "sorry, lady," and then turned around, crossed the street, and went in the opposite direction. I watched him leave, waited about ten minutes longer, then picked up my purse and went home, keeping an eye out for him. Nothing happened except for me getting home safe and untouched. The next day, I reported the incident to the police and filed a report, and stayed hyper vigilant for the next few weeks and warned my co-workers about what happened. Never saw him again, nor did anyone else. I read some articles about the how and why a woman is picked to be a victim, and the main things they look for include situational awareness (absolute MAJOR !) body language, how dressed, and how they're walking. I've only had one other altercation with a strange man in my life ( he lost, broken nose and loose teeth, another story). I've been taking practical martial arts and suggest for women Krav Maga, Aikido, Jeet Kun Do, or MMA. Good luck, stay safe! 🥋👍🧌
