    "the legroom (on the coach) is poor" - That's a pretty useless statement to anyone who doesn't know how tall you are. Maybe something like "I'm 1m75cm (about average for a male) and find the seats cramped"? On the ferry; the usual Audiots strike again I hear.

      If you're traveling by Citylink, I would recommend going on an weekend were you got a longer connection time. Because there's a 10 minute walk between the bus stop at templehill road and the terminal building at Troon. You can also travel by train to Troon and get a shuttle bus that leaves from St Meddans Street bus stop under the railway bridge which takes you to the terminal building.

    I note that you travelled on a weekend when the services connect together well. If you were to try and travel on a weekday you would not manage. The bus arrives at Troon 15 mins before the scheduled departure time. This does not get you to the ship before the last check in time. Additionally, on the return, the bus leaves Troon 10 mins after the vessels scheduled arrival time. You do not have time to get off the ship and to the bus. I went down a few days back to watch Alfred arrive, she was slightly late, this meant the bus which people might have already bought a ticket for left 5 mins before the ship even fully berthed. The weekday schedule needs drastically rethought as I don’t think anyone actually gave the timings any thought to begin with.

    • @Scottish_Transport_Explorer
      @Scottish_Transport_Explorer 3 місяці тому

      Unfortunately the 922 doesn't really link up with the ferry, which is just stupid. There's no wonder why the service haven't been well used, if it doesn't even link in with the ferry and that they don't even drop you off outside the terminal building. Unless Citylink improves the service, I really doubt that this service is going to last into 2025.

    My first observation is that this service is being run on a shoestring. The walk from the bus to the terminal and from the terminal to the vessel is fine for a young person like yourself, but I would find it a major disadvantage (65+). Also all access to the passenger areas is by stairs (or companionways). A major stumbling block for peeople with any walking disability. No, this service is not for the likes of me.

    • @Scottish_Transport_Explorer
      @Scottish_Transport_Explorer 2 місяці тому

      Luckily today (19th of May) Citylink has announced that their 922 service will now operate into Troon ferry terminal and to pick-up and drop-off people at the terminal building itself.

    • @roboftherock
      @roboftherock 2 місяці тому

      @@Scottish_Transport_Explorer Well, that is some good news, but it still leaves the trek between the terminal and the vessel. Not to be contemplated on a wet, windy day. and there is still the access to the passenger accomodation to be considered. Certainly not step-free.

    We are regular visits to Arran and were there for a long weekend last weekend. The ferry service is in a real mess at the moment and it was the first time we had sailed across from Troon. We went back to Ardrossan though. The terminal building and slipway seemed so far away from where the cars wait to board the ferry. Then it seemed to take ages- some cars had to turn around inside the car deck as they go on at Troon in through the stern. The lorries had to reverse off the ferry at Brodick. Also as it was so windy, it took ages for the boat to dock in Brodick. Also at Troon the foot passengers had to board via the car deck. It wasn’t ideal but I thought it was better than having no ferry at all. It must be so frustrating and a nightmare for the people who rely on the ferries for work and those who live on Arran.

    • @Scottish_Transport_Explorer
      @Scottish_Transport_Explorer 4 місяці тому

      When the ferry does move to Troon after the new ferries enter service, there will be a gangway at Troon. Plus having Troon as a secondly mainland port is far better than the ferry going all the way to Gourock in bad weather.

The tourist boards/ local councils note; families on budgets, walkers, hickers etc seem not to be included, ' travelling is an exciting part of a holiday', not a poor experience, that needs, to be overcome. Clansman is still my favourite. The first thing to do after boarding is get on deck to watch the departure. You get a good look at Oban from there and as you sail away there's a point where I feel like the land is leaving us, that's the point where I can relax. On weekdays there's the possibility of not hearing car alarms going off all the way to Coll. If you're lucky. After an hour and fifty minutes I go for a full Scottish breakfast and sit on the port side of Mariners and watch Tobermory glide past. It definitely gets a bit choppy when we get out of the Sound of Mull. In bad weather you can watch various crew members scampering around with a mop and bucket as the smell of disenfectant and vomit hand heavy in the air. The problem with Coll is that it's difficault to bearth in a strong southwesterly wind but it's a grand place, I go there as often as I can. The food is slightly more expensive than the mainland because of the expense of importing stock from the mainland. The hotel serves Jarl from Fyne Ales Brewery which is an excellent beer although the hotel owners can't hide their distain for dog owners and their pets when you call in to the public bar. Finally, my girlfriend leaves Coll orientated in the exact same way as she was when we arrived. Fun fact about Coll: the very last cats eye on the road network was removed a couple of years ago. It was between the Tellers of Tales and RSPB centre at Totronald. I have a photot of it taken in 2022 but when I visited in November 2023 that area had been patched up.

      Thanks for the comment. After travelling on MV Clansman for the first time back in July, I can say that she's definitely one of my favourite vessels. When I first travelled to Coll I unfortunately only had two hours on the island but hopefully this year I can spend longer on the Island by travelling there on a Wednesday because MV Clansman continues to Castlebay which of course would allow me to spend longer on Coll. Sorry for the late reply btw :)
