Can you explain the notetaking you do on the index cards? I didn't quite understand. Are you taking notes on just quotes, or main themes, on everything you highlight?? Thanks, just discovered the channel.
Thanks for watching! I’ll put together an in-depth video on my notes.
What really creeps me out are books that are about mysterious true life events where there are more questions than answers. I’ve been reading on the Dyatlov Pass Incident and The Franklin Expedition. Both are creepy if you sit back and let your mind wander about what happened.
Absolutely. True crime really gets me freaked out. 😂
If you can recommend some good romance books that would be awesome 💯
I’m currently reading crime and punishment already… but now I have an even longer list to buy and read! I have the Master and Margarita on the shelf to read and will move it up to my next one to read now too! Thanks for all the great suggestions
Great books. Crime and Punishment is my absolute favorite.
Dracula is superbly written.
Right?!
@thereadwellpodcast I just recently stumbled upon this playlist and I’m finding it enormously helpful as I am working my way to something similar. Are there really only seven videos? I was getting phenomenal nuggets out of every single one of the videos and I’m looking forward to finishing it. Am I missing them? Many thanks for taking the time to record what you have so far and for your vulnerability..
Unfortunately I did stop this playlist because I ended up enrolling in university for a full degree in philosophy.
@@TheReadWellPodcast good luck on your new journey !
How do you read books? I mean, the technique by which you collect content and decide to keep reading
It’s a skill like playing the piano takes practice. The more you get to know yourself and what holds your attention, the easier it gets. Spend time each day practicing the art of reading by slowing down and thinking critically about what you’re consuming. Great question.
Love your channel! How do you get through a book you WANT to read, but has long sluggish/boring parts to get through?
Great question. That depends on the book. If you’re committed to learning from the book, treat it like a study session with 10 well read pages a day. Don’t burn yourself out in the boring sections. Treat it as a practice the same way you would learn the piano. 🎹 Playing scales isn’t always fun, but one day, it leads to Bach.
My mom took us to the library often or had the bookmobile come to us. She valued and enjoyed reading so much and i guess I caught that bug from her. So many books - so little time! But, more time now in retirement to read more. Enjoying your podcast!
I miss the Bookmobile!
How do we get the code to see inside Edgewater? Super excited for you & your followers!
Right now I’m still building it, getting ready for the grand opening on Oct 23. The password feature will be removed that night!
I started reading again now that I retired. I started to annotate which helps me to focus for some reason. 📚
Thanks
will you have The Intellectual Life at Edgewater? is there a list of books that will initially be available?
My book supplier doesn’t have The Intellectual Life which makes sense because it’s a small press that released it. The m going to try and get it though. I just have to do some digging. I love that book. I’ll be sharing the list during my grand opening party Oct 23!
Thanks for sharing Billy Collins. He is my most favorite poet, ever!!!
You, bet! Billy Collin’s is wonderful.
I appreciate your encouragement to pursue our passions! Thank you for all the great information you share, and your attitude of acceptance. I feel so motivated to slow down my (non-fiction) reading, take notes, and apply what I learn. You're doing a wonderful service for the reading/writing community!
Thank you for this. Honestly, getting in front of the camera every week is a little daunting, so getting a message like this every now and then is needed
The late Carl Sagan said that when you open a book, you’re letting in another mind, perhaps across centuries and cultures. Seems like one should take some time doing that. We’re responsible for both sides of the conversation , too; that is, we have to present the author’s thoughts to ourselves. The craziness is that we do it so readily that we don’t realize it’s what we’re doing. That is also worth slowing down for.
I can’t think of any reason to tell a brilliant author to speed things up. I’d much rather slow down and have a great conversation.
The little notebooks look like a perfect way to remember the books and my reactions to them.
Reading slowly has allowed me to start really enjoying and remembering a great book again .I was always reading, but always in a hurry, and remembering that we can slow down has been a wonderful change for me. Thank you!!
Strange how reading slowly makes reading more enjoyable. Thanks for the comment!
New to the Channel but loved reading since I was a kid. I’m only 25 now and a full time RN. I’ve loved being a continual learner through reading and now get to pass it on to my 3 daughters who my wife is able homeschool.
New viewer, and I love all of this video so much! I'm also a book-sniffer, and as someone in my mid-40s, so much of what you say resonates with me. I also appreciate how gently conversational you are here -- I have public speaking experience and really miss this style of discourse. I run some book clubs for adolescents, so I'm fortunate in getting to read a lot of books as part of my job, but it's been hard for me to make space to read books for myself too. But I've been giving myself permission to engage both in nonfiction (partly as research for a story I'm writing), and in fiction for me alone. It's been a little challenging, because the "popular" writing styles have changed a lot, but on the plus side, there are so many options. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your videos (while making sure I keep reading!).
Thank you for watching! Read on.
57 years old ..retired in May, had already started my reading journey 2 years before during my breaks and lunch at work but it was too noisy..now I’m at home and love my quiet time. Had this conversation with a friend this morning and I told her I feel like I was transported to my 13-14 year old self..when it was just me (no boyfriend, no kids, no husband, no work 😂) so now I have to figure out what genre I prefer and if I’m a tangible book or audiobook lover (right now it’s 50/50) and I have always been a note taker and look up words new to me. I also read in Spanish which takes a few minutes longer to process/read/listen 😊
I have been a sixth grade language arts teacher for 31 years. I have read tons of YA books and just a few books that are considered great books. I am really enjoying choosing books for adults.
Good for you! And thank you for teaching the art of reading. We need more people like you.
Maybe we could apply your guide to FFA for our next collaborative episode.
I enjoy historical fiction. I'm thinking of using it to summarize chapters in the book notes and using the open notes to write character notes and other important stuff.
Great idea! Historical fiction is great. What are your favorite books?
I absolutely loved The Women! I love Kristen Hannah's books. 📚
Over the years, I have tried many different journals and systems to track my reading. I have purchased some designed and published to track reading and review books. The method that worked best for me was one I used during my 25 years as a librarian in charge of children's programming. I just used a cute spiral notebook where I recorded each children and young adult book that I read with a synopsis / review and age/interest range. I still have these, and I enjoy going back and reading them. Going forward I am planning to do a similar notebook for all my reading. Your tips and recommendations are very helpful, especially not to let it be too "precious". Thanks.
Thank you for reassuring me that I'm not the only "journal weirdo" in the world.
Ha! That made my day. We are all journal weirdos. Happy writing.
Love this podcast. I too have journal anxiety. I would start and stop a journal, start a new one, and felt very disorganized. I will try again. Thanks for your tips!
Thanks for listening!
when I complete my PhD I plan to teach, so reading is vital to growing my mind and knowing more about my interests.
Good luck! My wife had a PhD. I’ve seen how taxing it can be.
I recently reorganized my journal collection. I limited myself to a small box and purged all my old school journals from undergrad and MBA program. Now I just have the ones I love and use! Thanks so much for the encouragement I needed with my journals.
I love journals and now that I retired I use it more to keep track of my “projects”
People give me journals…and I’m afraid to use them, pretty much for the reasons you note. I have a hiking journal that is set up very nicely for the purpose, but I can’t decide how to use it.
Yep, that’s a common feeling. Hopefully the video helped a little.
Just discovered you and really enjoying!
Thank you!
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is on my TBR list !
Interesting and well done.
Eddy, I saw on your web page you were missing the 2nd “e” in Edgewater. You may have caught that already. Congratulations! Can’t wait to see the store.
This book is a treasure trove of information. It is not misogynistic nor does it advocate “old ways” of thinking. It’s advocating natural law and Virtue.
As a publishing industry professional for forty years, I highly recommend that you avail yourself of resources and educational opportunities of the American Booksellers Association. There is a steep learning curve to running a bookstore and in the interest of making the most prudent financial decisions, get well acquainted with the realities of the marketplace.
I’ve owned an accounting firm for 18 years and am ready for the challenge. Thanks is for the tip!
How about going to a thrift store
Wuthering Heights is what I would call a very difficult book, a personal enigma. I cannot read this book without feeling or suspecting that I am really missing something.
I am excited about the concept, and can't wait to receive one of those packages. I love to receive book mail and I post videos of my package on my channel. I will order from you as soon as possible.
You just made my day. Thank you for the shout out and support.
Hello sir..Where is this bookstore ?
I’m launching it as an online store first. If it does well, I will open a physical location. The website is at www.edgewaterbookstore.com
Just subscribed on your website to get updates.
oh God I love reading and I love stationery and I thought I was weird about nerding out about stationery FOR reading thanks for creating this, it has made me happy. :)
Fantastic! I’m glad it helped.
NEED this shirt.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I added reading as a ‘to do’ to my daily journal. Sometimes I would put it as read for 20 minutes and other times read a chapter. I was reading during my lunch break at work but I retired end May 2024 so now I have more time.
Great content ❤
Thanks for these helpful suggestions. I am naturally a fast reader, so slowing down and really taking in the scenery or even camping with a passage makes such good sense to me. I always look at a table of contents, but I don’t read it carefully. Your map analogy is great.
I always used to read a lot of criticism for college-level books. We had to read 5 books a week sometimes and the criticism helped; George Orwell, Joseph Conrad, Rhe Sisters Brontë; college really hammers your mind. 😆
Orwell is in the top 3 for me
Would you recommend a good dictionary? I know that sounds weird, but I have several and many words are not even in them. I really like dictionaries. But, the more I read important material, I find myself depending on the internet.
That’s a great question. I don’t have a specific one that I recommend, although, now I’m going to hunt for the best one. 😂 Maybe I’ll do a video of it when I find it. For now, I use a small Webster pocket dictionary which has a 70% success rate.
@@TheReadWellPodcast i hope you will do a video if it works out. thanks
If you're looking for something tangible in a hard copy and you have the funds and the shelf space a good set of the OED, Oxford English Dictionary, is usually pretty sufficient for most readers and writers alike. Just a thought.
@@In_Libris_Libertas "Set"? Not just one? I was thinking of getting an Oxford Dictionary. Thank you.
@@tonikeltz3751 My set of the OED is thirteen volumes with the supplement. There is an two volume edition but the print is so small it was originally sold with its own magnifying glass.
I have always been in the habit of taking notes and looking words up when I read. I also read in Spanish and reading in Spanish (my second language) is where I look up more words because in daily Spanish conversations I seldom use fancy/elevated words.
