Candidate Debate: Oregon's 6th Congressional District & Oregon Secretary of State - October 14, 2024
On October 14, 2024, the Forum Speaker Series hosted a debate featuring the candidates running for Oregon's 6th Congressional District and Oregon Secretary of State.
Oregon’s 6th Congressional District Candidates:
Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D)
Mike Erickson (R)
Oregon Secretary of State Candidates:
Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read (D)
Oregon State Senator Dennis Linthicum (R)
The Forum provided an exclusive opportunity for the business community to hear directly from the candidates as we prepare to vote in the upcoming General Election. Each candidate delivered opening and closing statements, responded to questions containing issues of great importance to businesses, and asked their respective opponent one question each.
We'd like to thank all of the candidates for their time and for sharing their views and positions.
We'd also like to thank the Salem Convention Center for providing the venue and meal, and Allied Video Productions and Capital Community Media for their help with producing this event.
Finally, a huge thanks go to Chemeketa Community College for serving as this month’s Forum Sponsor and to Hagan Hamilton Insurance Solutions for being our Presenting Sponsor for the entire 2024-2025 Forum Speaker Series season.

    Would love to help fix the area up as well if anyone is willing to get together and do a clean up day? Or even an hour? Why can’t we get a ton of people together and do 1-2 hours so no one has to feel they are giving too much time. Starts with just cleaning up after yourself but 2nd if everyone picked up 10 pieces of trash a week on the street the streets would be a lot cleaner

      Yes, these homeless addicts just steal from people and the community... I just got my 350$ bike stolen outside of Ross in West Salem, within 5 minutes. They watched me, and basically did it in front of police and still didn't get caught. I've also had people trying to break into my apartment when I was gone. It's a definite REAL problem. These people don't want to better their lives...most of them.

    If Governor Brown was so worried about ICU beds she would of made more available when she got the funding for it. Instead she used that money for other crap. And she also limits the number of covid beds hospitals can have which makes them look full since the number is so low. Then she puts ridiculous mandates which cost hospitals staff because of a damn shot. Then claims oh hospitals are full and truth is workers are being fired because of her nonsense. Then turns around and says oh people are afraid of covid and that is why they have staff shortages. No we see the staff protesting. We see staff online telling their stories of being fired. This is completely insane!!

      Not that bad lady. IF your kids get the virus they are less likely to die of it than to die just walking out your front door by some random happenstance. Things like getting hit by a car. Their bodies need to be exposed to this sickness so their bodies can develop immunities for the next time.

    When the first think that comes out of someone's mouth is an insult everything else they say is suspect and is probably agenda driven. Some think to take from one class (employers) and redistribute (give) to others is the way government should work and its higher calling. If any of us as Salem citizens think this tax is such a good idea then why not make it a property tax addition so that everyone in the community supports it instead of on the back of the employers in our community which ultimately drive up the cost of doing business in Salem (not good) and the cost of what we pay as consumers (not good). Why not a broad based tax because officials know it probably wouldn't pass. However if they can find a way to put it on the back of a few, make it look small and it doesn't effect most of us as city residence then it would probably pass, after all it did in Eugene and Portland. It had no positive impact in those communities, ridership didn't increase, government just got more money to waist. .21% isn't a small tax. For my small business its a $3,780 tax increase or a freeze on raises for my staff for the year or a rate increase to my customers, the citizens of our community of about .10 per sale. This tax is automatically adjusted so they don't have to show a need but can just bank on more money year over year, in good times and in bad. Must be nice. So don't think for a minute that you wont pay for this tax one way or another. So why not be honest about it. Call it what it is and instead make it a broad based community involvement tax, I would vote for that if I felt this was a good idea for Salem, as I'm sure you would. As a property tax we would clearly see if Salem citizens still think its something we need for economic development and good community livability. I don't think they will for Salem's economy is thriving without it and to say otherwise it just not factual.

  • @jimscheppke
    @jimscheppke 9 років тому

    Your message is a lie. State Government is already paying a payroll tax that is three times what Cherriots is proposing other employers pay. It's not true State Government "does not have to pay a dime." Quit lying. The State is doing its part to have good transit service in Salem. Other employers are getting a free ride. All employers in Eugene and Portland pay a payroll tax for transit. They understand that it's good for business - good for economic development and good for community livability. Their economies are thriving because they provide good transit service. Without good transit service our economic development will continue to suffer. You are doing your members a disservice by opposing this measure.
