Here's the Pilot Justus 95 video I referenced: ua-cam.com/video/G9wSGs5qS6s/v-deo.html Despite the coffin-looking packaging, this is a really nice pen. Ridiculous pricing in the US, but an objectively great pen.

Sorry - Coming back after 2 years. I was led back here from another of your reviews. I have polished up Lamy steel nibs to write as well as the superb Lamy 2000 nib, which is also small and stiff. The steel nibs are usually far too dry and opening them up with mechanics feeler gauges to 0.1mm and then a little polishing with 0.5 mylar lapping film is not difficult and it transforms them. Having said that I completely agree with your comments about larger nibs in other brands. For me the Lamy pens using the Z50 are badly let down by the poor nib finishing. Such a shame. Great review - please forgive the double posting.
Excellent review. I appreciate how you brought your own critical thinking into this review. FWIW I taught myself to tune and polish nibs with the Lamy Z50 nibs. I worked through about thirty of them. Their widths vary quite a bit and with the Mediums and fine most of them were scratchy and dry before I worked on them. I am told they are better now. For me they need to move forward from the Z50 they push it beyond what it is. I felt the Studio was the best nib / body pairing / value. Thanks 👍
Did the nib the change? I couldn't find any information on this. The pens are selling for a good price. Much cheaper than Pilot or Sailor.
Excellent review. I actually agree with your thoughts and overall assessment of this pen. I own the very same LE orange Scala (w/14k broad nib). I love it a lot. I knew I was paying far too much for the pen ($250) but I just went for it anyway. I prefer it to the Studio. I could never look past the Studio’s ugly propeller style clip - and the Scala just feels like a sturdier, superior pen to me. Only the weird price premium is unjustified, as you correctly stated here. Anyway, I have no regrets about getting this very pretty Scala. You should use yours more often, too. Kudos for the review.
This pen on Amazon is retailing at 300.00 I thought this was supposed to be cheaper and under 100?
The cool, is it the same as the Lecoule?
I write very fast. So to me the pilot custom 74 is the GOAT. I have other two but on faster writing the other two feels very uncomfortable. For sailor and platinum, journaling is ok as you write slowly. But when I write first drafts of my Webnovels I always use a pilot. 823, 74 or Custom Urushi.
I hate writing with my custom 74. Mine is a medium nib, and I keep trying to force myself to like it, but I need to apply so much pressure to get it to lay down any ink that it hurts to write with. Every few months i take out a dozen or so pens to ink and play with, and no matter how many cleanings, runs through the tines with a brass sheet, or different inks--including iroshizuku--I use, the hard starting and knuckle-whitening amount of pressure to get it to write at all just doesn't go away.
50000yen todays exchange rate for Australia is $510 , selling here for $1200 varying some have discounts of $200 . Tariffs…inflation rates, $ value. Shows the strength of the Yen, ? Still Japanese products are highly sought after, I’m prepared to happily pay the price for an excellent product from Japan . My preference for the Pilot cacoon than the metropolitan, but happily use both. I’m looking forward to purchasing more Japanese made Fountain Pens in the near future. ….found your channel today , glad I did. Subscribed.
Great review. I really enjoyed your additional thoughts. Yes, I can't feel the difference between the 18K and 14K nibs either. Pilot price to the local market. Here in the UK the 845 is selling for around $650 inc. tax. Which seems to be a fair price. From Japan (eBay) it can be had for $461 inc. Tax and shipping. This is one of my favourite pens to write with. It is up there with my Conway Stewart (Hand made) and Pelikan M800. That Urushi has a lovely feel in my hand. The Japanese website is now also in English. Anyway - Great review and great thoughts - Thank you.
Thank you! VERY good video. I got my MB 146 about 3 months ago: pristine/mint condition, late 1980s, ebonite feed, proper ink window, FSOM monotone gorgeous gold nib from a UK dealer for a little over £200. Indeed faultless, perfect pen and an absolute find. Now in love 100% with all the +positives including price!!! What’s not to like? But obviously very lucky find!!!
i prefer the al star. an issue that i've had with my safari (and not with my al star) is that the cap comes off way too easily, and will fly off if i drop it, which hasn't happened to me with any other pen. the cap has even come off a few times just from sitting in my pencil case in my bag, making the pen dry out. i haven't seen anyone else complain about this issue, so maybe there's some sort of user error or i just got an unusually bad pen, but it bugs me a lot. as a more general note, the safari feels a lot lighter and cheaper in my hand than the al star, which i don't enjoy.
Superb video - Great comments thanks.
Does it feel balanced posted please? I need to knoiw because I want to order this pen.
I have been thinking about upgrading my nibs only. In a fountain pen that’s the most important part. Thank you for making this!
I gave it a thumbs up, and I realize that they are all Japanese manufacturers, but he compared a medium nib on the Pilot Custom 74 to a broad nib on the Platinum 3776 so that is not accurate for me and cannot accept the result!
I refuse to pay hundreds of bucks just for a name. Jinhao pens are some of the best I own
A fountain pen for 450? Wow.
Well all this money certainly isn't going into Pilots design department. All these pens look almost identical and boring. Old men pens. I'm including not only within pilot but also platinum and sailor. You'd think they would make their highest tier pens different from lower tiers and their competition. But then again, that would require effort on their part and ppl seem to have no problem blowing 900 on this. I'll stick with the E95. If we are going to get nuts then let's get nuts. Seattle Pen Club should ditch these mass produced plastic pens designed to make the average person feel fancy and compare a Nakaya vs a Namiki. At least with those pens you are getting something for your money 😂 I'm not blaming the consumer, but the price gouging of the companies
There's no such thing as price gouging. No one is being forced to pay the money for these pens. The market decides the price.
I'm glad at least one youtuber is willing to say this instead of trying to push their subscribers into buying every color under the sun.
I bought myself a platinum preppy for my first fountain pen. It was hard starting and skipping a LOT. Which was disappointing because i really wanted to get into fountain pens. I put it in a drawer and forgot about it for about 2 years. I recently found it, flushed out the section, and now it writes WAY better. It's almost a completely different pen than i remember. I like it a lot now.
Very helpful, both the writing samples and the comments, and especially relating the FA to a brush.
It's a plastic Pilot Myu 701 😂
Nice video.. ❤.
My collection consists of a Lamy 2000 [F], Pilot VP [F], Lamy Studio LX [F], and the newest Kaweco AL Sport Piston [F]. The Lamy 2000 is my (workhorse / home) pen. It stays on my desk or beside my bed with my notebooks, as an aspiring author, I hand write my books stream of conscious, 20-50 pages a night. That wouldn’t happen without the Lamy 2000. That nib is just glassy-smooth, wet and glides across the page. Absolutely no pressure needed to get a perfect line every time. I’ve not had a dry-start since my first fill, and the tank hold enough ink for a few days writing. I call it my “Grandpa” pen. Tried and true, hasn’t changed in decades, set in its ways, reliable and has a history.
Hello from your neighbor in Port Townsend WA. Has or could the Seattle Pen club be willing to have a Show or meet-up over here, say in Silverdale, Bremerton, Port Angeles, or yes even Port Townsend??? Would love to be exposed to a lot of pens in one spot for comparison and meet other "local" fountain pen enthusiasts.
This is all metal. The studio has plastic parts.
I only write with a fountain pen and that pen has always been a parker sonnet. I own three sonnets now, one from the 90s, a GT silver one and a lacquer red GT which I bought for myself this christmas. I have had better experiences with the steel nib but I do prefer the medium steel nib to the fine one. After writing with fountain pens for 40 years on a daily basis I cannot justify the price of a Parker Duofold to a good Sonnet.
Hey! I’m the 25,000 view. Thanks for this clarification. I’m about to purchase a 743 and this is helpful as I am trying to decide which nib I should get.
That is a great idea, changing the nib of a 3776 to a Procyon, the Procyon body is just so much nicer than the cheap plastic of the 3776. Do you think that a President nib would fit on the Procyon body? I wonder if it would work.
Aren't jowos the shitty nibs that come with kawecos?
Parker is not an American brand. It is quintessentially British and English. It is the official pen of the Crown! I know they made many in France and America due to the colonial influence.
Great video. It's unfortunate that the Pilot Lucina seems to be nowhere to be found online nowadays. 😞
Yess but safari lx and gold nib , best , got MB sailor parker , beats all of them even laamy 2000
This 3776 in Laurel /Rhodium is my Christmas gift I’m excited
The answer is yes. The Lamy bodies are nice, particularly the AL-star… and the triangular grip is really great…. BUT…. Add the 14k nib…. And it is really nice. Makes the experience of writing with what is already an incredibly functional pen (think Bauhaus) that much better. The Stainless nibs are good, don’t get me wrong…. It’s just that much better with the gold.
Quick question: why does your Sailor 1911 have a red section?
Sadly 255€ over here...
One of the best writing experiences. 823 💪
Why did you hijack the name Seattle Pen Club when you have no association with the many years old organization "Seattle Pen Club"?
Why do you call yourself Seattle Pen Club when you have no association with the actual "Seattle Pen Club"?

Why do you call yourself Seattle Pen Club when you have no association with the longstanding organization "Seattle Pen Club"?
Why do you call yourself the Seattle Pen Club when you aren't even a MEMBER of the longstanding Seattle Pen Club?!?!?
Can you elaborate on your choice for the metal version of the Falcon over the resin one? Thanks ! Great vid. Subscribed.
Great topic. I was not familiar with most of these pens. Thank you!
Is that a Medium or Fine nib?
I have the Lamy AL Star in fiery (a rose-coral color) with a transparent deep ruby red grip section. I think it's stunning to look at, comfortable to use -- and I love the way it writes. I'm a medium nib writer. I'm sure the Safaris are nice too, but if I splurge and get another, it will be an AL Star.
can I convert this to a cartridge filler
A suggestion: Please set your camera to "Manual" focus. Focus on the page once, and then it won't keep refocusing on your hand when you write, so we can see the actual pen contacting the paper. Thank you
Being relatively new to fountain pens, and owning a Lamy safari in a medium, I am looking for something that offers me more line variation and shading. The sailor Music nib sample really caught my eye, but I would like a finder nib that has the same qualities (line variation and shading). Would you have a couple of suggestions on which pens, nib and ink combinations would allow me to achieve this? It must be affordable as I use it as a daily writer and carry it with me.
