Are you applying to a highly selective college or graduate program in the United States?
I'm a former dean of admissions, and on this channel I teach you how to think like an admissions officer, which is the ONLY audience that matters for your applications.
I attended Columbia, UChicago, and Cambridge, and I worked at UChicago and Stanford. I loved them in different ways, because they have very different cultures! Most importantly: I've experienced highly selective higher education in the United States from different sides of the table.
I'm the founder of Ivey Consulting (admissions consulting) and co-author of the books "How to Prepare a Standout College Application" and "The Ivey Guide to Law School Admissions." I'm also one of the co-founders of Service to School, which provides free admissions mentoring to US military servicemembers and veterans.
Have a great day! 🚀

One of my go to videos for college admissions activities
I am applying to uchicago fall 2023...learnt alot fron your video.. 🤟
This was great. Thank you. I’m a HS Counselor and I’m trying to learn as much as I can about admissions so I can guide my kids. We are a Title 1 school and the vast majority of my kids would be 1st gen. Their parents have few skills to help them and I’m so overextended (1 counselor for the entire school - 650 kids) that I can’t sit with each student and talk them through the process. Which means I have no idea what most applications look like. I did get a fake CommonApp but I’ve only gone as far as the common questions. Not into the separate colleges ones. Anyway, thanks for this. Also I’m in GA and no surprise we passed some stupid ass law like that. 🙄
Hi, my daughter is a normal intl. and needs considerable Financial aids. She loves Mount Holyoke whose admission rates for ED and RD is almost same last year, and based on her profile, this college is a Match. What do you think is the best application strategy? ED or RD? Thank you in advance!!!
Anna is one of the most knowledgeable college experts in the US. She has great tips and easy-to-understand explanations of the college application process.
plz make a video how to fill the activite section in smart way for international students
‘sup?~ increddible ~ have a good day!
Just want to correct a growing trend revealed in something you said, you said 'your guidance counselor is your number one allie'. No, parents are your number one allie, you should see some of the guidance counselors I've interacted with in my professional career. Parents have always turned up for the best interest of the child. Both parent and counselor can make mistakes, no doubt, but parents are reliably caring in the best interest of the applicant.
Hello, I Am an international applicant. Does applying in the early decision maximize my chance of getting it?.
Hi there -- whether domestic or international, if you're not already competitive for that school, then Early Decision doesn't really boost the odds, unless you fall into those exceptions I discuss in the video. A lot of ED spots are taken up by legacies and recruited athletes, so "normal" applicants have to be pretty strong to be accepted from the ED pool (incl. international students). If your profile can improve between ED and RD then it's better to apply RD.
HI Anna. I am wondering what you feeling is about using the additional info section on the common app. Some people advise "lumping" common activities so only to use the ten spots on the common app while others say to use the additional info space for overflow. Thoughts? Thank you.
Great question! Just uploaded a new video with my answer :)
Thank for your advice

nice video
Excellent advice
Thank you for your advice
Great advice, thanks... The Looney Mooney crew are on board
Hey Anna - you provide some really great advice. Wish you were around when I was applying to schools! In particular I liked the 2 examples you provided on how to tell your story. I'm going to use your framework to rework my website's About Me page!
@Keegan I love that idea!! Can't wait to see
Love to see this, Anna!
Hi! I would to get in touch with you and discuss about that book! Not only because I planned to apply in a US Law School while being originally a French Speaker from Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, people around me always insist that it’s a waste of time, I don’t really have a meaningful grasp of English and I face several other barriers. The more I have blockages the more I’m determined to make it. Thus you can imagine how much I need that book!
I like the way you described the book, it’s not an easy task to be able to figure out how the story in that book may apply in our everyday live!
I'm wondering if I have to clarify whether I will be majoring in music or not. I will be applying for Economics but I have an interest in theater. Especially because I am an international student, thus, never had chances to perform in high school plays or anything like that, I am afraid if my portfolio will be compared with professional applicants.
@@AnnaIveyVideo I have heard that we are allowed to elaborate on this passion in the additional information section and might even put a link to my performance. I was told by an accepted student that his video was reviewed by his admission officer and was considered more for passion than talent-compared with if he was to submit it as an art supplement. Is this true? I am considering this option as I won't be able to submit an english recommendation letter from a music teacher-as needed for the art supplement. Thank you in advance!
@@AnnaIveyVideo thank you!
How exactly do I know if I'm in the top 10-25% ? I'm worried that my self-assessment is unrealistic. (Piano Performance)
I'd also like to say how much I appreciate you doing these videos - they're very helpful !
