Videos featuring my vintage Schulmerich electro-mechanical carillon. This instrument has been reconstructed using parts from three smaller vintage Schulmerich carillons. It consists of 319 electro-acoustic “bells” comprising seven different bell types: English, Flemish, Harp, Celesta, Quadra, Minor Tierce, and Chimes. The bells are controlled from a two-manual plus pedal console. The English and Flemish bells may also be played automatically using punched rolls.

Special Request: 3-bell Peal, bells 1,2, and 4

By request, here are bells 1, 2, and 4 as a swinging peal. My carillon only allows one swinging bell at a time, so it is multitracked. I adjusted the swinging rate for each bell. Unfortunately, the multitracking means 3x as much noise - but it was the only way to generate a swinging peal.

Thanks
Thank YOU for listening. Glad you liked it!
Beautiful! One of my family member’s favorites Btw When do you think you’ll be able to do Valkyries by Wagner? I hope it could be a full version or an excerpt with all important parts of the song
Glad you enjoyed the video. I’m really sorry, but I just don’t have it in me to tackle the Wagner. Maybe someday.
Ok! How’s Valkyries going?
I do bet that, the English bells just look like clock rods?
The English bells are made of flat stock, about 5/16” wide and 3/32” thick. Each rod is attached to its own block, which also holds the pickup. These blocks all hang, resting on rubber grommets, from rails, so that the rods are horizontal. The end of each rod has a small hole through which a piece of cord is attached as a damper. I have long intended to make a video about the English bells as well as the Minor Tierce bells and the Chimes. Maybe someday I’ll get to it!
Would you be able to do Romeo & Juliet Theme somehow incorporating Flemish and Harp Bells? Or is R&J copyright
Yup, under copyright…
Can you do the Westminster chimes ?? Thank you in advance
It’s here: Westminster Chime Sequence - 12:00 ua-cam.com/video/cKvqDhf5kqM/v-deo.html
Beautiful. God bless!
Thank you very much. Same to you.

How bou standing on the promises?
I posted it yesterday!
Hello! How many more songs before Valkyries? I would hope to hear it if you’re willing to make a arrangement of Ride Of Valkyries(hope to hear full version)
Great ringing demonstration! can you do "Hey Jude" by the Beatles on the electronic carillon?
I only arrange and record music which is in the public domain, in order to avoid any copyright issues. Sorry!
@@rickruggiero7128 No worries! I understand.
Beautiful! Please do standing on the promises hymn!!!
I will get to that, I haven’t forgotten! Now that we’re back in ordinary time…
@rickruggiero7128 yaaaaay! What key are ya playing it in?
I don’t know…I haven’t written an arrangement of it yet!
Can you do one with bells 6, 3, and 2? It’s supposed to be in the G major cord.
There is no bell six.
@@rickruggiero7128 sorry. I meant to say 5.
Posted it today.
Hey there! Idk if you remembered me hehe but i would like to request a song and its Hosea by norbet
I would love to record that - but it is copyrighted so unfortunately I can’t. I like a lot of the tunes from Weston Priory!
Wow, this genuinely means a lot and sounds literally just like the Model 76 series, I really appreciate this Rick, God Bless🙏💯

He Leadeth Me - Schulmerich Carillon ua-cam.com/video/V-u9n8-_s8s/v-deo.html
This arrangement left me spellbound. If it was played for me blind, I would have guessed it was from a John Klein album!
Oh, Corey - you know you can’t give me a greater compliment than that! Thank you. It was the product of over two months’ work. I’m glad it spoke to you!
@@rickruggiero7128 I figured you had to have spent a substantial amount of time for a piece that hit such highs. I doubt they have anyone with such talent on the "inside" nowadays. There is so much potential with the instruments being sold for arrangements like this that were not possible on rolls or even early digital systems. None of Klein's complex works were reproducible on roll players. In fact, they had magnetic tape playback at that time for that reason on the Coca-Cola instrument. At the very least, it would be amazing to see you play at Stone Mountain. With a heavy heart, I recently discovered that Mabel passed in 2022. I can't think of anyone else more fitting to sit at the console and play in her footsteps.
Wow, this was an absolutely fabulous piece! I've been playing around with the g5 more lately. Makes me wish I could convince you to do your arrangements using software that can output MIDI!
Thanks, Corey! It’s funny, after nearly 30 years of arranging solely on a computer, I have really come to appreciate the pencil and paper - and lots of eraser - approach. I guess there is no reason a finished arrangement couldn’t be transcribed into software; I’m just usually on to the next piece once I get something recorded. I’m not sure how the assigning of bell voices would work if I were to create a MIDI file, but I’m sure you have a handle on that part of it.
@@rickruggiero7128 I could see the creative process being easier with paper. I looked around and there may now be software that can take a scan of a score and actually digitize it, maybe save a few corrections instead of having to enter it manually. The best thing would be a MIDI stream out of your console - everything could saved without effort, especially as you continue to make more complex arrangements. The g5 file format is rudimentary as each voice has a separate MIDI channel, which would complicate large arrangements. I think most organs output note-by-note data per manual, along with stop changes.
So I suppose a multi-voiced arrangement would end up looking somewhat like a band score, with each voice having its own staff (or pair of staves). That really wouldn’t be terribly difficult to do. It would still be best to start with a straight keyboard score, and then develop the individual staves according to registration changes. Hmmm.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! HAPPY LATE NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re welcome, and same to you!
@rickruggiero7128 😊😊😊😊😊
Nice!

Hello Have you gotten to work on Valkries? I’ve always been interested in the song and would be interested to know what it would be like on carillon, if possible a full version May God Bless You in Your Carillon Works, and I hope you’re enjoying some of mine too(on real and digital bells)
I’ve not forgotten…just haven’t had the gumption to get into it. Plus I have wanted to focus my efforts on Christmas.
Beautiful, can you do jingle bells?
Thanks! I have it written out but cannot play it reliably enough…yet.
@rickruggiero7128 how come u can't play it yet?
I wrote an elaborate arrangement which just didn’t work. It was awkward to play. So, yesterday I wrote out a second, simpler one so I could post it as a short.
@rickruggiero7128 ahh, when ae ya gonna post it?
@@rickruggiero7128 never-ending found it.
Nobody makes any mechanical masterpieces like this anymore. Super amazing mechanics and mechanism!
I believe Maas-Rowe in California is still producing struck-rod electronic carillons, but you’re right in that it’s a rarity these days. You might enjoy looking at videos produced by organ builders, especially tracker-action instruments. LOTS of cool mechanics in those. Thanks for watching my channel!
Hi Rick, I wanted to ask if you know anything about the Schulmerich Carillon model 76 series. My church, St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church in Bethlehem, PA, has one, and I’ve been trying to learn more about it. It has a 3-bell panel configuration, not the 5-bell panel like others I’ve seen in videos and yours. I first noticed the carillon about three weeks ago when I was serving as an altar boy. It brought back memories of my best friend, Father Dan, who passed away from COVID three years ago. He introduced me to the carillon when I was 8, baptized me as a baby, and married my parents 14 years ago. It would mean so much if you could make a video about the model 76 series, especially if you could ring bells 1, 2, and 4 on your carillon. These three bells seem to match the same notes as my church’s carillon, and it would be a wonderful way to honor Father Dan’s memory. Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your knowledge and videos, they’ve been a big help
Hello! Glad you have enjoyed my videos! I’m sorry, but I am unfamiliar with the model 76 series instruments. However, I can certainly record the bells you requested. I assume you mean having those three bells “swinging” simultaneously in a peal? My carillon will only allow one at a time, but I can multitrack it to get the effect. I am also very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Father Dan, COVID certainly took a toll on many people and on many aspects of everyday life.
@ thank you so much I really appreciate it
Awesome! What else are you doing for chrismas?
THANK U SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful! Even the decorations are also magnificent!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked the decorations, too. I’m a big fan of vintage/antique Christmas. By the way, I think I have an arrangement of “On Jordan’s Bank” that I could record as a short. I’ll try…just very busy right now, plus I have a request for “Jingle Bells” that I promised months ago, so trying to get that in as well!
@rickruggiero7128 yeah I can tell. On Jordan's bank, in a short, would be perfect. How long is taking u to do jingle bells?
U should do dance of the sugarplum fairy!!
Ha! Maybe next year!
@rickruggiero7128 noooooooooooooo, I wanted this year nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
@rickruggiero7128 then what's wrong with on Jordan's bank?
Hi there! Can i make a proposition... if you record every rank of bells each note, ill make it into a virtual instrument playable on a computer. I can make it in various formats..nki .vst .sf2 .sfz. also if you photograph in detail the console and the tabs (in the on/off position) i can make a Hauptwerk console. Ill make salable versions. I can make a folder on my Google drive so you can send large soundfiles easily. Thanks for your time xx
I don’t think I can do that, as it would put me in direct competition with Schulmerich, which still makes carillons using samples of these same rod sounds.
Oh.... I thought they switched to digital samples? Prefer this system over digital samples. Even though they sound only vaguely like church bells the harmonic content is wonderful!! I Would you bell wiling to record it for personal use? I was also going to use them as clock chimes k@@rickruggiero7128
We are thankful for you sharing these!
Wow, what a nice thing to say. It’s funny how thankfulness works. I make these recordings because I myself feel so thankful that I have this instrument. I am always delighted when someone else enjoys hearing it.

Thank u very much!!!!!! Hows the other project u were working on coming?
You’re welcome. I’m still working on the piece, it has some tricky spots and it’s just not quite holding together yet. It’s a Christmas-related tune so I hope to have it ready before too much longer.
@rickruggiero7128 k, take ur time.
Absolutely enchanting! Do you have the sheet music for this?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I do have written-out (i.e. hand-scrawled) versions of everything I record. If you want it, I could email it to you if you message me via Bandcamp. I can’t promise it would be very readable, lol!

Sorry you didn’t like it. I do my best.
Hi what wrong with doing count your many blessings?
Sorry I’ve been out of touch lately. I am working on a very big piece, which is coming along slowly. I also have an outstanding request or two…but I will try to get to this tune if I can. Nice choice right before Thanksgiving!
@rickruggiero7128 ok.
Could ya do standing the promises?
Hi, whats wrong with onward christian soldiers?
Absolutely amazing!!!
Why dont ya try thomas and friends theme?
I suspect that would be copyrighted - so can’t use it.
@rickruggiero7128 yeah, ur right, but how bout standing in the promises?
FASCINATING!!!! I wonder if they got the original inspiration from grandfather clock gong rods? Also what about the other sounds...you demonstrated the flemish and the H-C-Q bells but what about the Minor, English, Chimes and celestial harp bells?
I’m glad you liked these videos! I need to edit the H-C-Q video because a former Schulmerich employee pointed out that those particular rods were not in fact bronze (although the literature at the time implied they were). They were actually steel! The Flemish rods are bronze, and no doubt the various clock-type rods were the starting point for Schulmerich and the other companies. I have intended to make videos about both the English and Minor Tierce bells, but have not done so in part because I have been unable to piece together much information about their development. I think English Bells were originally cylindrical rods with tuning weights (like the Flemish) but I am not certain. From sometime in the 1950’s onward, they became a flat strip of brass, clamped at one end, and hanging horizontally. Minor Tierce rods look very much like the H-C-Q, but the notches, tuning weights, and strike points are at different locations. Someday I will get my act together and make those remaining videos! (BTW, I don’t have Celestial Harp; the carillon this console originally controlled had them. I have never seen them, but from hearing them I suspect they might be tines of some sort. They have a timbre much more like a music box or a Rhodes piano than any of the other bell types.)
Is that your clock in the video?
Yes, I have close to 30 mechanical clocks. Nothing terribly valuable, but I enjoy them! They keep me busy with cleaning, oiling - and winding!😂
@ can i hear it play Westminster?
Can you do this is my father's world?
Sorry, I can’t - it is still protected under copyright.
