Videos featuring my vintage Schulmerich electro-mechanical carillon. This instrument has been reconstructed using parts from three smaller vintage Schulmerich carillons. It consists of 319 electro-acoustic “bells” comprising seven different bell types: English, Flemish, Harp, Celesta, Quadra, Minor Tierce, and Chimes. The bells are controlled from a two-manual plus pedal console. The English and Flemish bells may also be played automatically using punched rolls.

Sweet and Low - Schulmerich Carillon
Переглядів 1643 місяці тому
Here is the old-time song, arranged for Schulmerich carillon. After a solo verse on the Chimes, the tune is played on the English Bells with Harp Bell accompaniment. There is a certain degree of harmonic trickery required in this combination, as the interval of the minor sixth must be avoided between the two bell types. This is accomplished by the very careful spelling of chords, incomplete or ...

Awesome! What else are you doing for chrismas?
THANK U SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful! Even the decorations are also magnificent!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked the decorations, too. I’m a big fan of vintage/antique Christmas. By the way, I think I have an arrangement of “On Jordan’s Bank” that I could record as a short. I’ll try…just very busy right now, plus I have a request for “Jingle Bells” that I promised months ago, so trying to get that in as well!
@rickruggiero7128 yeah I can tell. On Jordan's bank, in a short, would be perfect. How long is taking u to do jingle bells?
U should do dance of the sugarplum fairy!!
Ha! Maybe next year!
@rickruggiero7128 noooooooooooooo, I wanted this year nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
@rickruggiero7128 then what's wrong with on Jordan's bank?
Hi there! Can i make a proposition... if you record every rank of bells each note, ill make it into a virtual instrument playable on a computer. I can make it in various formats..nki .vst .sf2 .sfz. also if you photograph in detail the console and the tabs (in the on/off position) i can make a Hauptwerk console. Ill make salable versions. I can make a folder on my Google drive so you can send large soundfiles easily. Thanks for your time xx
I don’t think I can do that, as it would put me in direct competition with Schulmerich, which still makes carillons using samples of these same rod sounds.
Oh.... I thought they switched to digital samples? Prefer this system over digital samples. Even though they sound only vaguely like church bells the harmonic content is wonderful!! I Would you bell wiling to record it for personal use? I was also going to use them as clock chimes k@@rickruggiero7128
We are thankful for you sharing these!
Wow, what a nice thing to say. It’s funny how thankfulness works. I make these recordings because I myself feel so thankful that I have this instrument. I am always delighted when someone else enjoys hearing it.
@@rickruggiero7128 😊😊😊
Happy thanksgiving!!!!
Thank you! I hope yours was happy as well!
@rickruggiero7128 it was. What did u do?
I spent the day with family.
@rickruggiero7128 NICE! My ant aunt and uncle came up and we spent the day with them!!!!
Thank u very much!!!!!! Hows the other project u were working on coming?
You’re welcome. I’m still working on the piece, it has some tricky spots and it’s just not quite holding together yet. It’s a Christmas-related tune so I hope to have it ready before too much longer.
@rickruggiero7128 k, take ur time.
Absolutely enchanting! Do you have the sheet music for this?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I do have written-out (i.e. hand-scrawled) versions of everything I record. If you want it, I could email it to you if you message me via Bandcamp. I can’t promise it would be very readable, lol!
Too slow
Sorry you didn’t like it. I do my best.
Hi what wrong with doing count your many blessings?
Sorry I’ve been out of touch lately. I am working on a very big piece, which is coming along slowly. I also have an outstanding request or two…but I will try to get to this tune if I can. Nice choice right before Thanksgiving!
@rickruggiero7128 ok.
Could ya do standing the promises?
Hi, whats wrong with onward christian soldiers?
Absolutely amazing!!!
Why dont ya try thomas and friends theme?
I suspect that would be copyrighted - so can’t use it.
@rickruggiero7128 yeah, ur right, but how bout standing in the promises?
FASCINATING!!!! I wonder if they got the original inspiration from grandfather clock gong rods? Also what about the other sounds...you demonstrated the flemish and the H-C-Q bells but what about the Minor, English, Chimes and celestial harp bells?
I’m glad you liked these videos! I need to edit the H-C-Q video because a former Schulmerich employee pointed out that those particular rods were not in fact bronze (although the literature at the time implied they were). They were actually steel! The Flemish rods are bronze, and no doubt the various clock-type rods were the starting point for Schulmerich and the other companies. I have intended to make videos about both the English and Minor Tierce bells, but have not done so in part because I have been unable to piece together much information about their development. I think English Bells were originally cylindrical rods with tuning weights (like the Flemish) but I am not certain. From sometime in the 1950’s onward, they became a flat strip of brass, clamped at one end, and hanging horizontally. Minor Tierce rods look very much like the H-C-Q, but the notches, tuning weights, and strike points are at different locations. Someday I will get my act together and make those remaining videos! (BTW, I don’t have Celestial Harp; the carillon this console originally controlled had them. I have never seen them, but from hearing them I suspect they might be tines of some sort. They have a timbre much more like a music box or a Rhodes piano than any of the other bell types.)
Is that your clock in the video?
Yes, I have close to 30 mechanical clocks. Nothing terribly valuable, but I enjoy them! They keep me busy with cleaning, oiling - and winding!😂
@ can i hear it play Westminster?
Can you do this is my father's world?
Sorry, I can’t - it is still protected under copyright.
@rickruggiero7128 nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
@rickruggiero7128 how bout god of our fathers?
Soo good
Thank you!

Calming Melody! Have you figured out any plans for Richard Wagner Ride of The Valkyries? Hopefully you can arrange some low pitched Flemish bells in the song too Keep em coming!
Nothing yet on The Valkyries. Meanwhile, glad you are enjoying the shorts like this one! I am also midway through writing a very involved adaptation that I hope to post ahead of the holidays.
I loved that song! I especially found Shine On Harvest Moon interesting! It sounded like a symphonic version. I liked how you had the low pitched bells for harmony accompaniment in that song! I believe that was with pedals
You are correct about the pedals. I’m still looking for an octave of tone generators because I am missing the lowest pedal octave for some of the bell voices. If I ever find that octave, there will be more variety available for those pedal notes.
Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!!! Found it
You’re most welcome.

Is there a way to get a recording? I have a church on a hill on my train layout and u would like to set it up with a small speaker to play this.
I’m honored! If you message me through Bandcamp I might be able to email you a file.
Thanks i will try
Thanks! I could've waited till the thing was fixed! THANKS SO MUCH THO!!!!!!!
You’re welcome!
When are ya doing for the beauty of the earth?
It might not be for a while. My main amp blew up the other day. I have not been able to find the issue so far. The arrangement is ready to go…
@@rickruggiero7128 how did it blow up?
Probably a failed capacitor, though I replaced them just a few years ago. Anyway, I turned on the carillon and was greeted by a very loud, nasty hum. I have temporarily patched in an old stereo receiver which will buy me some time, but I won’t have use of the English bells until the original amp can be repaired (they receive a special biasing voltage from the amplifier, and won’t work without it).
@rickruggiero7128 wow. Ya dont have to take the thing completely apart, right
The amp pulls out of the control cabinet, so the rest of the instrument stays intact. I have a substitute amp in there now. I just posted “For the Beauty of the Earth,” with a slightly different registration to make up for the missing English bells.
Even though its fall im in the mood for Christmas
I’m always in the mood for Christmas, lol!
Hello Rick, Your videos are awesome. I'm wondering if you would have any information on Schulmerich model #180. It was built in 1959 I believe. It was taken out of service many years ago for whatever reason. It works except it doesn't chime during programs. This one is different than the one your demonstrating how to set programs. Ours uses the clock chains for programming. There are long pins with red and green plastic rollers that are installed between the two chains. When the chains come around, the rollers come in contact with what appears to be a switch. Nothing happens when the rollers push in the switches. I'm wondering if it might be the problem. I have the instruction manual for this machine but it makes no mention of setting up programs. Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you! Rob Freebury University of Montana Western
Hi Rob, I assume there are also toggle switches for the programs, and that they are “on.” If not, look for those. Also, there is a cam somewhere inside the timer that allows programs to be disabled on certain days of the week by removing screws. It should be located behind the “Day” window on the front panel. Either the clock could be set to a day on which programs are disabled, or perhaps somehow the actuator that tracks that cam could be stuck? Just a thought. The little switches which are engaged by the plastic rollers could be dirty and might need to be worked several times. Or, more seriously, there could be a bad relay. More serious problems could be a failed relay. If you message me through Bandcamp, we can exchange contact info and even talk. That might be easier! RichardJRuggiero.bandcamp.com Thanks for your kind words!
One more request can you play happy birthday on flemish and english bells ?
Are you wanting to hear those two bell types combined or one after the other?
Both
I will get to it - but the main amplifier, which is necessary for the English Bells to function - has failed. I have pulled the amp and am trying to diagnose the problem. Keep your fingers crossed! Meanwhile, I have swapped in a temporary substitute amp so I will keep posting music - just no English Bells for a while.
I have my English Bells back - so I’ll work on your request now!
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
Thank you very much!
Can you do the Westminster chimes like how it sounds on the schulmerich novabell
The Novabell has a different set of bell voices than my (much older) carillon, so I can’t duplicate the sound. Sorry!
Its okay
Hi, what's wrong with doing all hail the power of jesus' mame

Another good suggestion! I will plan to do that one in Advent as it is often used with “On Jordan’s Bank.”

@rickruggiero7128 OK, how about PRESSCOT tune
I like the fact that we can see the pedals from this view!
I try to change the angle from time to time. Of course, many times I don’t use any pedal, so in those cases I try to let the viewer forget they’re even there!🤣
Love your music! Have you figured out how you’re going to do Ride Of Valkyries for your Classical Playlist? Hope to hear from you soon! David
Sorry, no progress on the Wagner. Glad you are enjoying the other recordings, though!
@@rickruggiero7128 ok thanks! Hope to get to hear that soon. God bless you and your carillon! -david
Thanks - you play everything expertly. I believe I am partial to English bells since they remind me the most of the songs I used to hear outdoors as a kid. A church (Lutheran I think) a block away would play songs at the usual marked times of the day. On a beautiful, bright day the songs seemed to come from the clouds (I was 7 or so).
Thank you for your kind words. I too grew up a block away from a church which had English bells, played “live” by the organist. I recall hearing them on Sunday mornings and - most memorably - Christmas Eve. I like your image of music coming from the clouds!
Where is this carillon located? I would love to come and listen one day.
The carillon is in my home studio in Queensbury, NY. If you’re ever in the area you would be welcome to visit.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
You’re welcome!
Amen to that! Wonderful sound!
Thanks!
Where are you located?
I’m in Queensbury, NY.
@@rickruggiero7128 I have a friend of mine who is also a church organist and plays the carillon. Maybe if her travels 🧳 take her up to the NYC area, I'll have her message you so she can come up to Queensbury to play your carillon.
Just FYI - I am about 4 hours north of NYC. Just at the edge of the Adirondack Park.
That 1950's electronic carillon has such a divine sound! how beautiful! thanks for presenting this!
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! I really like the sound of these electromechanical carillons, too.
@@rickruggiero7128 Another thing I really admire is the mechanics of it, which make it so cool.
Absolutely. Every note is generated by struck metal. Every tone generator was handmade. In the Flemish set, each bell base has someone’s initials in pencil - I assume those of the tuner.
