Graia, Project Aurora and Noctilith | Space Marine 2 Lore Explainer Part 2 | SM2 Lore
Warhammer 40k has some DEEP lore and so many obscure, esoteric terms that make it hard for the newcomer to know what is going on. I play with two other guys who are very new to the setting and I often have to explain the nuances of what is going on. Luckily, I'm a filthy nerd who is more than happy to talk at length about his favourite setting.
In this one, we are going to go after what happened on Forge World Graia, what Project Aurora is and how it is connected to Graia and what Noctilith (Blackstone) is.
I will also go into my personal theory about why Titus can resist the Warp the way he does.
Finally, I highly recommend checking out the first video in this series:
ua-cam.com/video/txrMvbaCXo4/v-deo.htmlsi=N3oJq_ce3x60sxSg
It will be very useful to advancing your understanding of the setting at large.
If you have questions or criticisms, don't be shy and drop them in the comments below. I'll get to them as quick as I can.

      So, without being able to see your game, I'll have to go off memory. As I recall, you should just be able to proceed straight up the map from the door you enter by until you come to a blocked path and a heretek priest. I'm a little fuzzy on the exact order as it has been quite a while but I think that's right. There should be something you can interact with to open a gate or a lift which will enable you to proceed on the green path. I am planning to revisit the game again this year to see how all the balance patches and DLC have affected it. I hope that your current run goes well once you are able to proceed here. It's quite a ride.

    While I agree with the building, I do think there needs to be more! Theres like 10 different stone blocks and thats great but I want more colors and textures not just different shades of grey and brown. Maybe the alchemist can create dye that can be used to make different colored clay blocks like in Minecraft or something.

      Getting more materials and textures via the Alchemist is a great idea! I'd be very keen to see more building options like that too. Frankly, I'd be shocked if they don't expand more on it. They have clearly put so much love into the system already.

    The game reminds me off a cozy game; but with fighting as well. I got to level 25 (which is the max at the moment) without even completing all the quests mainly because I was having too much fun trying different castle builds. I hope they add more castle related things like draw bridges, portcullis, and arrow slits for example. The environment is just breath taking and I think even Bob Ross would have approved. One doesn't have to be into building to enjoy the game; but if one does then that person will get their money's worth. Getting around the map will sometimes challenge your problem solving; because of how altars can be used. If you do decided to play make sure you get the double jump skill as soon as possible. In the beginning I died more times than I care to recall; but now I revisit areas from the beginning of the game I am like the terminator. There does need to be more information on what bonus to your weapons mean like + 12 ice armor etc; because it is not clear what exactly does that mean. Also wish one could change the color of outfits so one could personalize them and that one could transfer traits from one outfit to another so if you liked the look of an outfit you could keep that one instead of having to upgrade. Since you can play with up to 16 people those last 2 options would help separate your character from others.

    • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 15 днів тому

      I think it is a pretty inescapable comparison. It’s like a city vs a village in social structure. Classic MMOs like wow offer a lot of big fancy lights but have become kind of soulless as a result of the intense focus on instanced dungeons. Valheim is all about creating intimate settings with a lot of life in them due to how important those social bonds are to the experience.

    I have one question. With thinking machines being historically banned, we can assume computers and cogitators might have a servitor intelligence, but what are Space Marine Auspecs and how do they work?

    • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 16 днів тому

      So this is a good question and a pretty fuzzy area to get into since it leads to talking about what a ‘Machine Spirit’ is exactly. Machine Spirits to me, have always sounded like AI-adjacent without actually being AI. Vehicles like Titans or the marine’s power armor or the immense cogitators at the heart of a Mechanicus foundry would all be said to have a ‘machine spirit’. What that means, to me at least, is a semi-autonomous program capable of great cogitation but unable to do anything or learn anything outside the scope of its parameters. A Titan might overwhelm its Princeps and run amok, but it would never start doing finger painting or learn to play an enormous violin. The auspex of the marine’s power armor similarly knows how to paint targets and make sense of what is happening in poor environmental conditions but couldn’t force the marine to tap dance or have a conversation with him. It is kind of hand wavy and seems to be a way for the storytelling to have plot elements that require advanced technology in a micro form especially where something as grimdark as the human form cannibalized to serve as a computer would be too clunky. Does that help at all?

    • @cameronphares2482
      @cameronphares2482 15 днів тому

      edit* to answer your question on auspex, a space marine auspex is just a scanner, that communicates with the machine spirit of the space marine’s armor. having played 40k for nearly a decade now and read many books, This is one of my favorite aspects of the setting. you need to understand that during the dark age of technology, AI was everywhere. It did their dishes, fought their wars, and ploughed their fields. The imperium exists off of the scraps/technology from that dark age, but they understand almost none of it. So you can do the math. there is no way they reliably would know what AI looked like. All they know is that these war machines/ technologies they create and need can act autonomously. Must be a spirit that inhabits the machine! Lets call it a Machine Spirit! All humanity knows is that AI was the reason they fell. Its like a stone age society putting a ban on electricity, an abstract concept far beyond comprehension. The only cases they would know for sure it was electricity is if lightning struck.

    This is the first time Ive heard of First Born Marines being refered to as Principia. So even for a seasoned Warhammer 40k afficionado, Ive learned something new today. ^^ Thanks mate ^^ Addendum: Im fairly certain the chap adressing the Servitor at 10:43 is a Chapter Serf and not Tech Priest.

    • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 16 днів тому

      Thanks for commenting! I'm glad that I got to impart something new to you today. 'Principia' is a term I first came across in Darkness in the Blood. It came from a conversation between Qvo-87 and Dante of the Blood Angels. I liked it better than First Born and since it came from the righthand man/monstrosity of the Prime Conduit Belisarius Cawl himself, I'm going to go ahead with it. Regarding the Chapter Serf/ Tech Priest, someone else actually mentioned this in another comment and I have to admit I can't be 100% sure it is in fact a tech-priest. The reason I felt it might be a Tech Priest is two reasons. The tone of the conversation regarded the tolerance for flaws in welds struck me as too nitpicky and technical for a Serf and Servitor to be engaging in. The second is that I felt that the character just sounded like an initiate into the mysteries of the Machine. They have jussssst the right bit of superiority to their tone. That whole "I know what I'm talking about better than you, layperson." that someone who knows just enough to be cocky has. Also, the lack of heavy external modification could fit an initiate tech priest. That's a long winded way for me to say, you could very well be right and if you are then I must happily stand corrected. Ave Imperator!

    • @LtCWest
      @LtCWest 16 днів тому

      @@athacusgaming Ah, fair enough ^^ For me it was the fact that those red robed but not massively augmented dudes are everywhere on the ship, one was even seen sweeping the ground with a basic broom, which is not something Id image even a Mechanicus initiate would do but just delegate it to a servitor. Their robes also lack the typical Mechanicus insignia and white frills (but also dont have Ultramarine markings). Also, a techpriest telling a servitor that it did a good enough job, despite the later claiming its inperfect seems to me a bit out of character for the Mechanicus who are notorious for demanding perfection from their machines, just ask the Iron Hands. ^^

    The Inquisitor that stole Titus was a dirty Heretic, so his methods were under question. He was taken back under the behest of the Chapter Master and most likely the head of the Imperium, Robot Gilly Man.

    • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 16 днів тому

      Inquisitor Thrax, who took Titus into the cares of the Inquisition after SM1 finished, was a heretic? My understanding is that he was a Monodominant puritan of the Ordo Malleus and that he eventually became possessed by a daemon during an action at which point he was killed. The Ordo Malleus is prone to views that are ultra-orthodox, even by the standards of the Inquisition as a whole. What did he do that was heretical prior to his death? Some of the lore attached to Space Marine is really woolly so I would love to have the picture filled in if you could help me out.

    This was great! A couple inaccuracies regarding the Adeptus Mechanicus though- The Omnissiah is not the same as the Machine God. The Omnissiah is the Emperor, who the AdMech view as the vessel of the Machine God's will (kinda like Jesus in christianity.) Also I believe the two speaking about flux or whatever, one is a servitor (as you pointed out) and the other is what's called a Chapter Serf. They're normal humans who are used as auxiliary crew aboard space marine vessels and fortresses. You don't need a Space Marine to monitor a power system, or to target space guns, for example.

I was trying to avoid falling into long tangents as much as possible and over-simplified. Just comparing it to how Jesus functions in the Trinity could have been a better way to go. To your second point, I’m genuinely curious about if that’s a tech-priest just starting out their journey into the mysteries of the AdMech or if it’s a serf. Their tone, bearing and clothing made me think they were an initiate. There’s a book, and I think it’s called Master of Mankind from the Horus Heresy series, that goes into great detail about the early life of Belisarius Cawl. The irritated tone the priest/chapter-serf took here reminded me so much of Qvo and Cawl as young adepts that I had assumed that the character here was a priest too. I should have used a better example. Thanks again for commenting! I appreciate constructive feedback like this immensely.

      A lot of it is, yeah. There's a very good reason behind why and it lies in an AI uprising that happened before the modern Imperium was even founded. Those are servitorized humans forced to live in that little niche until they literally can't function at which point they'll be swapped out for a "fresh" servitor.

    In real life, failure is the best teacher. But in Valheim you are penalized for it. In fact, failures are cumulative and take some time to come back from. So you can be kept from trying new and more difficult things. In real life, failures make us smarter and more skilled but not in Valheim. You already have to run and pick up your gear if you die. And possibly die again. I could get behind tool damage or loss. But it is unrealistik to get worse at everything if you make mistakes or get unlucky. (here is where some will say how great THEY are)

    • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 19 днів тому

      We talked about this back and forth a lot. In general, and I'm saying this as an older guy who played a lot of MMOs, I hate weapon skills in particular, as a system. It becomes particularly rough in Valheim for the reasons you mentioned. We wound up turning down skill losses on death as far as the slider allowed in the end. Learning a new biome, especially on a higher difficulty, became far too punishing otherwise. I'd suggest to anyone to tailor their Valheim experience to what they want. With all the sliders in now, it's not too hard to make something that feels comfortable for you rather than what Iron Gate might consider their "default" experience.

      It is, in my opinion, a pretty good blend of a lot of the things that people liked about games as diverse as Kingdoms of Amalur and the Legend of Zelda series. Tbh the one thing that has always felt off about the shield and maul is how irrelevant the lights feel. I wish they were slower and more cleave or single target focused. • @athacusgaming
      @athacusgaming 2 місяці тому

      I had this exact discussion with my crew awhile back. I understand why the power maul isn’t more obvious objectively I think. They don’t want to take away focus from a single handed weapon that already exists but it does make the shield feel strange in that respect.
