unfortunately, Most tailor shops are owned by Indians in Bangkok, so they brought the scamming way to Thailand as well. Local Thai's or more like Illegal Laos or Cambodians who work for tips when you go to Indian scamming tailor shops. Most Thai's could earn more legally than scamming tourists as Thailand has one of the lowest unemployment rate in the whole world at around 1% compared to US, UK, Eu where its close to 4 to 7%.

Tailor shops are almost all owned by India people who pay Thais almost nothing to create the suits

80% of those scammers on 90% of those cameras are foreigners

I was in Bangkok 2 weeks ago and I bought 16 tailor made suits. I love all of them and didn’t have any problems because I negotiated the price. It didn’t take more than 4 days to get any of my suits made. MBK mall have the best prices and quality. That’s where I bought most of my suits from.

For tourists from western countries, Thailand is already cheap, so to speak. No need to try cutting more corners for bargains. Even what seems costly in Thailand, is really affordable for westerners. Just pay, enjoy and be safe.

I've been visiting Thailand for more than 15 years and have lived there several times. In my humble opinion, you a) never take a Tuk Tuk, never,. Stay off of those motocys, because you can get killed on one of those things. Take a water taxi or the MRT or BTS or WALK, b) never go to a tailor without first befriending a local or an expat who will tell you what shops are scams c) never, ever call Songkran a water 'fight'. It is a festival to celebrate the rain for a bountiful harvest.

As a travel advisor this is why I say you need to book your travel with a travel agent. One who is educated in the destination and to make sure things like this don't happen. And what world would an attorney ever come up and solicit you for anything? That in itself should have been your first red flag. It's always best to do the proper research and to consult with someone in the travel industry who could give you the proper advice and information when traveling. So many people want to do it themselves thinking cheaper is better. What people fail to realize are travel hacks could end up costing you your life as opposed to just money.

We fortunately had a good experience in Bangkok with tailor made clothes. Super cheap, fit me and my husband like a glove. We were there for our honeymoon in 2018 and he still wears those suits. The company we used was recommended to us by our hotel so maybe that helped.

I definitely would’ve been filing a police report. Especially with the clothes not fitting.

Made to measure clothes, jewellery shops, tuk tuk, these have been going on for a long time.

I have travelled to 49 countries and counting. The most my bag has ever weighed is 12kg. I buy cheap clothes at the destination ( SE Asia, clothes are so cheap!!) I wear them for the duration of the trip then give them away at the end. I never waste space taking toiletries with me. Buy at the destination (it's 2024, not 1824. All countries have the same products). Similarly, in markets, if I need, I buy shoes / socks/ undies. All the basic medicines ( panadol, immodium) are readily available in many (not all) countries (check before you go). Three essentials I always travel with: 1. A sleeping sheet, which I had made in India- a light cotton sheet sewn like a sleeping bag, that loops over a pillow, so I know I'm sleeping my own clean bedding. Especially because I don't stay in 4 star joints. 2. A good quality lightweight jacket that double as warm sleepwear 3. A sarong converts as needed to be a towel/ sheet/ tablecloth/ dress/scarf/ skirt/modesty shoulder covering/ or even a mini tent for some orivacy on long bus journeys ( who cares if people think Im weird, I'm bever going to see them again) 4. A good quality cross body bag.

Wish I had seen this earlier 😢😢 I’m 3 weeks into my 5 month trip around SE Asia and I wish I didn’t have my check-in suitcase which adds 60% to the cost of my inter-Asia flights and I haven’t used anything more than what fits into my carry-on so the large suitcase isn’t needed at all but I’m stuck with lugging it around for 5 months! All that to say - Yes please- more packing videos! 🙂
