THE IMPORTANCE OF…..ACCEPTING THE DELAY FROM PRACTICE TO MATCHES | Ep 2 |
Hi everyone!
Here’s episode 2 in my series “The Importance Of…” where I look at a range of topics relating to table tennis, from mental strategies to technique advice and much more.
Here we look at a topic not often covered in TT textbooks; accepting that the work you do in training can take time to work into your competitive matches. But if we realise this, and more importantly accept it, it can allow us to be patient and focused both when we practice and also when we compete.
I hope you enjoy!

Many thanks, I feel exactly as you outlined in this video…I also feel worse as some of the friends I train with are developing quicker than myself..☹️ So it is nice that you state what we are doing in practice will come into games in the future 😀
Yes, keep working on the right things and it will come into your game. Just be patient!
I just discovered the hook serve. The fast version is really useful, hitting in the one corner and making it bonce on the other corner on the backhand side. I mix it with the Tomahawk serve on forehand since the racket grip is the same.
How many times on average are you practicing and playing league matches in the season Neil? Cheers
I’d say 1-2 training sessions per week, 1-2 matches.
Another excellent video Neil, in my opinion and I’ve been playing a long time is finding quality practice is essential, the correct practice partner who can better you and work you is paramount, facilities, practice partner and effort will reward you, and of course as in any sport you have to most of all enjoy it! All credit to you.
Congrats on hitting and exceeding the 1k subscribers Neil - another good video.
@ thank you! 🙏🏻
Wow Neil, the hours u put in u shouldn't be losing to this dude. But we have them days
@@JohnnyGoodall-cs9yn Disagree mate, Brett is a quality player who also puts lots of hours in!
What a disrespectful comment, there is no way you would have the balls to say this to Brett in person.
This channel is amazing! Can't wait for the next upload!
Lots more coming!!
Your backhand opener has really come on strong. A few months ago you weren’t doing by flicks and loops like that! 👏👏👏
Nice and easy 😊🎉🎉 Thank you
If he is England no 6 ranked player , it shows how crap table tennis is in this country .not disrespecting him mind .
Imagine how big Chris would be if he didn’t play table tennis.
1st point and I’m done ha ha 😂😂😂
Exactly! I find that most of my misses are due to this… not being very committed to the stroke, be it FH or BH, trying to play safe. It was kinda like an Aha moment for me when i realized this. Seems like it’s true that it’s no better to be safe than sorry, indeed. Now, I train myself to quickly identify opportunities, and when i find it i go for it with “no mercy”. .
he doesnt toss the ball high enough surely...
All serves long Neil? 9.9 2 long serves u can't attack he wins both points dude
I know mate, don’t know what I was thinking 🙈
I can see Pete Walker in the background (again). Have you paid him his Royalties yet? He is always there supporting "Team Myatt" 😅😅😅😅😅😅
He was playing in the match, not just watching 😂
@neilmyatt1980 I don't see any videos of his matches seen as he is always playing?? 😅😅😅😅
@ I don’t think he ever wants to watch himself playing 😅
Maybe some gentle encouragement from yourself will do the trick 😅 Pete has had some good top division wins this current season so like yourself he wants to improve. You could have a side vlog...e.g. Fellow"Team Myatt" games but all under the main vlog
The weekend is just around the corner! Enjoy your game and have a wonderful time😊
Just one more day, and it's the weekend! Enjoy playing table tennis and have a happy time
You too 👍🏼
9 seconds in the match And thats his best return 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for sharing your experience. I noticed your quick progress in the BH play. Go on this way! Going back to comment your defeat against Brett: What could you have done differently? I daresay: I noticed you have won some good points aiming to wide angle. It seems you like to play conservative in the center of the table instead wide angle. Another tip could be alternate and try to let him move back and forth as well right and left. Brett has very long arm and forehand (!) it is not easy to displace him because he is very mobile on his legs for his age. Next time try to alternate short play aiming at the angle with short push combined with long topspin attacks. And yes, as you say attack more on his FH side (when he is attacked on FH he tends to lift more the balls because he is often in late and does not chop). In addition add some random training drills sessions including change of pace looking for anticipation and quicker transition BH-FH.
Great to see you playing more backhands, holding your position and not looking to play forehand, you actually looked a much more competent player, my advice to you was heard! Keep it up.
@@andrewgray1934 thanks Andrew. Still made mistakes, but was rarely caught out pivoting or hitting forehands from the backhand side which is definite progress. Long term project but got to start somewhere!
It just looked a better performance, table tennis isn’t easy and 11 up doesn’t give you much wiggle room, you have to hit the ground running,I’m still learning after 45 years!!
Where is the 'love' button??? Backhand looking CLEAN and forehand counter the best i've seen from you. Really nice you must be feeling happy with your level at this event. p.s. he flipped you off at 20:03 also : )
Thanks Matty! Soooooo much to work on but I’m really hoping this is the start of a change to my BH. I know I’ve got the shot but I’ve just been shying away from using it. It will take some time, but everytime I play I’ll be looking to use it more, and because I choose to, not because I have to 👍🏼
Feels like am everywhere aren't i? 😂
@JoeTTno7 that’s because you are mate 😅
Great to meet you at the weekend neil great vlog as always buddy 💯🏓🏓🏓
Thanks Tim, you too mate 👍🏼
“Good win “ Neil ! Your last two games which helped a lot was your forehand which was dominant winning a lot of your points..🏓
Just found the channel. Nice quality on the videos. The match unfortunately got away from you a bit after a really strong start in the 1st game. In game 1 you were really positive on the first ball and also looking to add some pressure moving well and looking for the wider wings to out manoeuvre Colin then finish. Game 2 onwards there seemed a bit of a little lack of urgency with good spin looping but a lack of the stronger ball to finish the point. Maybe because you had such a strong start in game 1? Without the threat of that stronger ball Colin definitely found the groove. Always making you play that extra ball more than you wanted. Those slightly higher balls need a bit of a stronger reply maybe or a wider return to make the player move out of their safe comfort zone. It opens up the table for you and readies the smash or strong topspin drive to try and finish the point. It also opens up an angle to the wide other side of the table to pull the player out away and make them move while you set up again. Congrats on the channel. Cheers.
Illegal serve, should had been reported to the umpire. The toss is not only non-vertical, but it's not even up at all, it's like accompanying the ball and letting it go almost at the highest point, and tossing back. Normally I don't care if the other person doesn't get much advantage from his serve, but in this case he gets nice spin because of the illegal toss.
This is more the Neil Myatt I know! Apart from the first game, where you missed a couple of shots, the other three games were very good. That spinny backhand down the line, consistent consecutive attacks, and one could tell that you were focus yet relaxed, you don't smile during games when you're having a bad day. That tomahawk serve is a good serve to have in your sleeve for crucial points, it would be good to practise it a bit so you are used to the kind of ball that comes back, you seemed to misjudge what kind of shot you needed to do an effective 3rd ball attack, but the service usually gives you a nice high ball to attack. You looked very sharp during that match, and I see that you had a good night. Looking forward to our next encounter.
@@Belgamor77 thanks Carlos! Are you playing in the Trafford closed next weekend?
@@neilmyatt1980 no, I'm playing at Huddersfield
Very strong opponent, I would definitely have looked for ways to get more forehand returns from him off serve. You really never got him out of the backhand corner and the few times you did, he sometimes only had to make one good block or xounrer to win the point, which means you have a weakness on your wide forehand as well that you need to shore up a little. Having written all that, i can see more clearly that your game is mostly about trying to get your forehand to put pressure on the opponent's backhand. You probably need as you get better to build in a few more plays that go down the line and then require you to prepare to move to continue the rally. But these are just thoughts, he is a really strong player.
Looks like they're all more tense and miserable than if they were at home with the wives😅 Where is fun boys? Old mans league n all..loosen up😁
Something that works for me against long pimple players is giving them balls with not much spin, making them move left and right, and if they chop a bit too high, I don't loop, I power hit the ball unless it comes back too loaded. Slight backspin is not too hard to flat hit if it's high enough, you need a pimples partner. I train with Leo, he has made me a much better player against pimples. You did the textbook (1 or max 2 topspins, then the short open push), but I felt like Colin was a bit too comfortable with that. You have consistency, I think you could be a bit more creative and unexpected against these kind of players.
Hey Neil, watched this one through. I thought in general it was a very mature performance from you (from a tabletennis play perspective). The spinning was great, the touching up heavy backspin balls also looked very seemless, alongside the guidey flick balls. He stayed very consistent as the match went on, 4th set you gave him a few cheap points on serve receive and perhaps you got a few % less patience as the match went on (it's tough when they're getting a lot back). He got a good few lucky nets, but pips players will always get the advantage with these. Few things to note: 1 - He serves out of the hand, and he doesn't wait for you to be ready. (3:06 for example, you'd barely just looked at him and he was serving after walking back to the table). This doesn't happen by mistake. Players will try to rush you for receive (especially when trailing I've found) - Don't let them. 3:42 is another good example, you pass him the ball back and literally as soon as he's caught it it's into the service (letted due to ball). Can we find another? Yes we can, 5:25 - you're barely crouched and this one results in a receive error at 7-7 in the second, crucial point. My advice is to either stick your hand up until you are crouched and ready - Or ensure when you are passing the ball it's passed super slowly so it will bounce 2/3/4 times so you can get into position. Can't let this non toss immediate serve bs continue. 2 - I noted 8 points where after you touch the ball up, he comes in and chops with his forehand rubber - 7 times you lost in the next shot, 1 time you played a winner. 3:47 is one example for reference. 11:05 another, but you can have a look through. It seemed like it always went into the net. I think it's okay to take a bit to know how much backspin they're getting with the forehand rubber, but I think this issue just lasted a bit too long in the match (still happening at 1-3 in the 5th set 15:55). One question I have is did you have any thoughts going into the 5th? First few points a bit unorthodox just
@@TTMatthew Hi Matt, thanks so much for a detailed analysis. I was aware that I missed quite a few from his FH chop immediately after my push. For some reason I kept thinking this ball was more float so didn’t accelerate the same as the long pips chop. You’re right, I should have adjusted by the last 2 sets. I’d watched a chap earlier in the day hammer Colin, he literally beat him -2, -3, -2 or something like that by consistently flat driving straight past him. This is something I need to do better, my plan is to train more against pimples as I never play them unless in a match.
@@neilmyatt1980 My brother and I bought a pimples bat a good few years back after similar issues of only playing against it every few months and not really being prepared. I played against a club member (only one that I know of) a few weeks ago and it took me about 10 minutes of adjusting and getting the power from my legs before I was able to absolutely power through balls with heavy pips backspin on them. In a match you don't get 10 minutes to get your feel in. One way to get yourself a ball to flat kill / drive through is just pushing into the pimple side, because you'll get a ball back with a bit of topspin on it. I think a lot of your touches were into his forehand side though to be fair he twiddled a bit. Though serving backspin and killing the next ball is valid too, instead of mostly serving backspin and looping the next ball, I guess it's just something you can try to mix things up. I have an old video executing this fairly well - may or may not be of use ua-cam.com/video/RvNJlbBzKQ4/v-deo.html
Actually you played very well in this match. Body low, good positioning, good rallies. He was obviously avoiding your forehand, and he went to bh to bh rally, changing to fh all of a sudden so you had to hit on the run, which didn't work very often. You hit good shots and opened a lot of his serves, which seemed to have a tremendous amount of backspin (judging his serve motion). You mentioned that you wanted to work on your BH, I would suggest shots with a lower arch, maybe a bit of punch-blocking. It doesn't seem like much, but if you get the ball to reach your opponent a fraction of a second faster, they'll have less time to prepare a good shot and might give you weaker returns.
Good match. He didn't let you initiate the offense very often, since he doesn't push much, he tries to loop everything with forehand and backhand. Shame that your counter-loops didn't work, you tried them several times during the match. I would recommend trying to open his serves a bit more, he took a lot of advantage from third ball attacks when you pushed his serve. I can tell that you weren't having your best day, I have seen you playing faster and more focused, and your body is lower when you do so. Andrew seemed like a very effective player, nothing too flashy but overall very consistent and good placement. I'm sure you can beat him.
Well played. You got on top of his serves because he only used two, whereas you mixed them up more.
I feel your pain, look back at the first game and build on what you did well in that, don't show your frustrations, difficult as it may be. Practice, practice, practice and work more on your weaknesses. 👍
Keep brushing it Neil it's all a learning curve I'm on that curve as well.🎉😊
Than you so much for your feedback and support, this really means a lot! And I’ll definitely take your advice on board. Glad your enjoying the videos, lots more coming 🙃
Hi mate, Thank you so much for posting your videos and sharing your journey with the world. I find it really fascinating, helpful and inspiring and I’m sure others do as well. Of course opening yourself up like this means that you invite armchair/keyboard “coaches” like myself to comment. I’ll leave more technical aspects of your game to more qualified people (except to say that against pimples you need to do more deeper flat serves, and your looping style is too upwards and sometimes you need to vary it and go forward). My main feedback to you is about your attitude. You don’t appear to be focused on the game or what’s coming up. At the start of the second and third games you’re looking around distracted, rather than appearing to be focused on what you have to do on the table. Like so many players, you get annoyed when you make a bad shot or your opponent gets a net, but you just need to put that behind you and just focus on the next point. You need to bring more energy to your game. I can assure you that you have complete strangers on the other side of the world, like me in Australia, cheering you on and really wanting you to get better and have great results. all the best.

Hi Neil, good game I think I enjoyed it more than you! Your game has improved tremendously over the last 12 months keep up the good work and your excellent videos, all the best!
Thanks Andrew, you are a really solid player with great tight serves, very tough to play against. This match was good for me to realise the weakness I have in looking for my FH too much. The next few months with be focussed on BH for sure! Hopefully see you soon bud 👍🏼
Balls of Fury!
Neil, You should have pointed out his irregular serves to the umpire. The toss on the hook serves is always irregular, it is not vertical at all. I also have noticed you suffer his block. I suggest you to train with a sparring who anticipate (blocker), you need to react faster. Too easy for him to push you on your left angle and the block to your right angle. You have to exploit more and better your backhand, but you already now well this concept.
Good win, he's a solid player.
Great video! It makes me want to practice table tennis more😊
