Interesting stuff. No mention, however, of the change to IHT from a domicile test to a residency test. Before the budget, a UK domiciled person could be liable to UK IHT on their worldwide assets; now there is a residency test, so people who left the UK more than 10 years before their death, needn’t be concerned about UK IHT on worldwide assets.

I appreciate the cautionary thought behind your comments about chateaux but it is also worth emphasizing that if living in a piece of medieval, Renaissance or Gothic history is a true passion, a chateau is achievable. As you say, budget and priority list are crucial and romanticism must be disciplined and don't be fooled by outlandish UA-cam channels. There are all shapes, sizes and ages of chateaux that are not money pits (maybe a small pit). We found one on the outskirts of a small commune that is of manageable size for maintenance and comfortable living with an amount of beautiful land that we could never afford in the States. It is unfolding its history to us year by year (just 3 years now) and we are grateful that we stuck to our budget and compromised on the priority list. It is also worth mentioning that the cost of living in much of France (outside the big cities) is much more reasonable than the States. We are in the Dordogne.
