    Where abouts in MN (approximately is your farm?). We just bought around Duluth and trying to find permaculture farms around!

    Wow, we are using the exact same tow behind brush mower! Keep that Carbon flowing. Will we see you at George Heller's this September?

      I hope to make it there. I thought we might see you at Jordan Meyer's grazing school a couple of weeks ago.

    Unrolling hay tends to reseed the pastures better & naturally spreads out manure. We bale graze the poorest areas 1st yr & unroll after that.

      Agreed. We unrolled hay the last 2 summers when it was dry and have seen good results.

    Good information. I recently bought some property and the soil is very compacted as well.

      It didn't help that the first 3 summers were pretty dry. We'll probably mow the fields after the sheep and cows go through to put more carbon on the soil.

    have you thought about a Illama or a donkey?

  • @KeystoneFarm
    @KeystoneFarm 3 місяці тому

    Yes, my brother has one but it has trouble staying in with them when he only uses one wire to keep them in. The dog Is with the goat right now because I use netting with the goats.

    It would probably be a good idea.. to get a guardian dog.. for the sheep

    The weed I was trying to think of is goldenrod.

    The other grass that I was thinking of is fescue.

    I said at one point that the sheep are katahdin. They are actually St. Croix.

    Ratchet Strap is a great idea! Might have to try that next time we're in a situation where the snows too deep and unrolling won't work.

    • @KeystoneFarm
      @KeystoneFarm 4 місяці тому

      Yeah, it's good for certain contexts. When the bale gets to about 1/6 it's size I unroll the rest.

    Great Farm name! Are you by chance familiar with Peter Allen's work?

    • @KeystoneFarm
      @KeystoneFarm 4 місяці тому

      Very familiar. I enjoy his content. I have been to a farm conference where he spoke. My farming philosophy probably most closely resembles his.

      @@KeystoneFarm I had a feeling. Nikki and I just finished up the Regenerative Farm Design course he teaches along with Lindsay Rebhan. Great stuff! Informative, inspiring, and really challenged some of the ways we think about our farm. There's an entire lecture in there titled "Becoming Keystone" which is why your farm name made me think of him.

      @@wholeviewfarm Do you know if he is still working on writing a book? Awhile back he said that he was but I haven't seen it yet.

      @@KeystoneFarm Yes, he's definitely still planning to publish, but not sure when. He's been pretty busy lately; teaching, farming, and finishing their house / getting moved in.
