The word Aran – What Does It Mean?
The word Aran has traditionally been explained as an old Gaelic word for 'kidney'. Writers over many centuries have argued that the main island of the Aran Islands, Inis Mór, is the shape of a kidney. That does not resonate with me, and it does not explain why two other islands located in Celtic regions are also called Aran. We have Arranmore in County Donegal, Ireland, and the Isle of Arran in Scotland. Watch this video and find out the far more likely meaning of the word Aran.

SLWoA 5 Teampall Bheanáin
Переглядів 4293 місяці тому
Teampall Bheanáin is the smallest church in Ireland. Perched on top of a hill, exposed to all weathers, it was the oratory of an anchorite. The anchorite's bedroom is just in front of it. Other interesting features: it is not oriented east-west, like all the other Celtic churches, and it does not have an altar or an east window. This video will explain all, and even reveal a secret!
SLWoA 4 St Enda's Monastery
Переглядів 3494 місяці тому
In this video, I bring you through the site of St Enda's main monastery on Árainn. The area is called Killeany, or Cill Éinne in Gaelic, meaning the hermit cell of St Enda. A Viking attack in the 9th century destroyed the monastery, and later the buildings were dismantled to provide stones for the construction of Arkyne's Castle, a Cromwellian fort nearby. However, there are still plenty of mar...

SWLoA 3 St Enda Patriarch of Irish Monasticism
Переглядів 1376 місяців тому
St Enda is known as the patriarch of Irish monasticism. When he came to Aran, he brought over 100 monks with him, and spread them out in small communities of 12 or 13 throughout the island. His model of community became the template for all future monasteries in Ireland. His feast-day is March 21st.

Newsletter 18 Doing The Rounds of a Holy Well
Переглядів 164Рік тому
Doing the 'rounds' of a holy well is an ancient practice in Ireland that goes back further than Christianity. It was first practiced in the ancient Celtic polytheist culture of Ireland beginning 5000 years ago.
RitualsAtHolyWell
Переглядів 215Рік тому
Holy wells have been used as places of Christian ritual for centuries, but before Christianity, the Celts used them also for sacred purposes. For the Celts the holy well is an entrance into the womb of Mother Earth. It is therefore a symbol of the feminine. Today we can practice new rituals at the holy well to celebrate femininity or new birth.

Serendipity & Coincidence

Sometimes, at intense moments in our lives, we can experience a coincidence that is almost too serendipitous to be attributed to chance. Something happens outside of ourselves, and outside of our control, which seems to speak directly to our situation. Rather than dismiss these experiences, I invite you to consider them as mystical and as indicating to you that there is much more to our lives, ...

I’ll be there again in August and will make sure to follow your footsteps from the sea to the tower and Church and everything in between! Grma. Paul

Ok wow, first comment after over 20 years of using UA-cam - it's hard for me to found words, what this island and Mr. Molloy means to me. When you look at the history of both, you think at the first moment they are rebellious and a little bit rough (which is, when we are honest, of course great). But at the second look i've (too) rarely seen such a beautiful soul and heart of both of them. Thank you for one the best times of my life. Go dtógfaidh tú an t-am le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar na hiontais chiúin nach bhfuil meas ar bith acu ar an domhan nois. Aaron

That's a wonderful little video Dara. Lovely to see and hear you at the same time (unlike on the phone|) but particularly interesting story about the Gregory Sound. Having sailed through there on a few occasions over the years I somehow knew of a connection to Pope Gregory but I don't believe I ever heard the story about his casket and that connection to Arainn. Fascinating!! Also delighted to be reminded of the Benedictine Rule and how it came to replace the Irish Celtic Monk's Rule, which if I may say so, explains your own journey, back to the source.

Thank you for this beautiful magazine. I enjoyed all of the content. The piece above , the podcast, the poems of Mary Oliver and Tess's beautiful poem about living on Aran and her essay on the ego and self. It reminded me of how beautiful a symbol of the self the tree is. We could think of gravity as an expression of the holding love of mother earth.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I just listened to a radio interview you were invited to in November last year, which resonated greatly in regards to my son who is on the brink of facing his fears and 'stepping off the cliff' as you'd put it, with his life-calling. Something which seems to be troubling him greatly at this time. I wonder if you have any plans to make a podcast which details your experiences of transitioning from Catholic Priesthood, to Celtic Monk & beyond? It may just inspire him to take the plunge in terms of his own aspirations in life, all be they different to yours.

Thanks for that. My own son is at the same stage. It requires a lot of courage sometimes to be true to yourself and not compromise. The best we can do for our kids is encourage them, support them, believe in them, and let them know we are there as a backup if they need us. Yes, I do plan to do podcasts of my own down the road. Thanks for the encouragement. I already have a newsletter with some video casts. You can sign up here www.aislingpublications.com/globalisation/ContactUs.html
