It takes alot of practice. Be real light with both top n bottom steel. When shaving if it drags and doesn't cut it needs rolled up, if it grabs and jumps alot it needs rolled down. You should hear a real smooth sound when sharpening and that normally means a good sharpen on it.

No I don't. If you feel your steel start to heat up, you are pushing to hard or on it for to long. I did top n bottom at same time top normally flat and bottom at about the 10 o'clock position.

It depends on the blade, who you get it from, how good you are at sharpening, if you hit something. Some guys can get a 100 from one blade, some 50. I did closer to 50-60 buy I also did 30 white tail hides a day.

It's going to take you awhile to figure it out. In about a year you should be able to get dozen or so done a day with minimal holes. It's not something you pick up over night.

Genuinely curious, I know that there is some sort of ratio. the height needs to drop to break properly. Would a 4 foot Tumblr like this be able to break a deer hide or would it need to be upgraded to a 6 foot drop?

I have a black bear I tanned a few years back and I didn't do the best job softening it as it was my first solo hide and it's stiff in some spots such as the face. It's been on the wall in our house and it's so much uglier than my other bears and I'm looking for someone who's interested in some business on softening.
