My name is Oss, you bent my sword, prepare to die! - Ep 32
This month we’re getting elite as Matilda chats all about chieftain burials with archaeologist, curator, editor, and model Dr Sasja van der Vaart-Verschoof (also known on her online platforms as The Overdressed Archaeologist). Well, they’re talking about one chieftain burial in particular - that found in Oss in the Netherlands - and they’re especially talking about why the burial included a large and beautifully made iron sword bent into a ring. Why did people break or bend swords before burying them in the past? How could such a sword be bent into a ring? And how does Sasja manage to juggle so many different jobs and specialisms? Listen in to find out!

Thanks for yet another great discussion. But regarding the White Sands human trackways, which have been dated to between 23k and 21k years ago, I'm not aware of any "hotly debated" controversy in that dating. Had you stated this prior to the C-64 dating of the clearly stratified seeds used in the analyses I could've understood your claim of controversy. However, since A) the results of that dating, supplemented by and confirmed by B) subsequent further analysis clarifying that the carbon within the seeds was indeed associated with them and not merely absorption, that is no longer debated. Any cursory review of this issue will soon be confirmed; so, 23k to 21k years is both an academically and professionally well supported conclusion that people were in that melt off retention/wetland region at that time.

Feder vomits many words and claims but nothing of the carving itself. I seriously doubt he has actually walked the path he claims. Without photographic proof of him next to the stone in an actual (not Ai generated) photo Feder offers no proof of being there. He says that Farly claims Scandinavians lived there when it was carved. He misstates so many things that no one listens to him. He does nothing but put words in Gloria Farley's mouth that she never wrote or said. Farley did not claim Scandinavians settling in Oklahoma made the carving as a land claim, Zero. He stated in the absence of archaeological evidence you would have to defer to a linguist or runologist then, Feder says he cares nothing of facts of authenticity from a runologist. Feder says nothing about the stone carving itself other than big letters. He dances all around with nothing of any substance. What a JOKE simply baiting to sell a book. Stopped listening at the break point 49 minutes in. A total waste of time listening.
