I am a handweaver who strives to make beautiful and useful things. My love for all things fiber started over twenty years ago when I first learned how to sew. Since then I have also learned knitting, spinning, and dyeing. I make videos to share my love of weaving with non-weavers.
Weaving isn't Finished till it's Finished
This is the final video in my series introducing non-weavers to weaving. I talk about finishing, the process of turning weaving as it comes off the loom into finished cloth, and show different ways of hemming.

Once the warp is beamed, I continue to dress the loom. First, I thread the warp threads through heddles on the appropriate shafts. Next, I sley the threads by placing them through the reed. After moving the reed and shafts into position, I tie the warp onto the front tie bar and tie the shafts to the lamms and treadles.

Tablet or card weaving, is an ancient type of weaving usually used to create bands. Instead of using heddles or shafts to create a shed, the warp threads are threaded through cards or tablets with holes in them. The cards are then turned to create the pattern.
Beaming a Warp

I'm doing a series introducing non-weavers to the process of weaving, from thread to finished cloth. In this video I show how I beam my warp. Beaming is the process of wrapping the warp around the warp beam so that it can be unwound during weaving.

Plain weave is the simplest weave structure, which means it weaves very quickly.
Weaving Damask on a Drawloom

Drawlooms allow the weaver to control small groups of threads to create more complex patterns. This is damask, meaning that is it woven in a satin structure. This loom is set up to allow me to control 29 pattern shafts in the middle of the cloth and to additionally control single units of threads on the borders. I first selects the appropriate threads by pulling the knobs, then I weave five wefts.
Weaving a Rep Rug

Rep weaves use two wefts, a large one and a small one. The large weft is used in one shed, then the small one is used in the exact opposite shed. This particular rep weave is a rug, so it has to be beat hard!
Changing Sheds in Rep Weave

In rep weave, a pattern is created using blocks of color in the warp. The bands of color you can see as the sheds change will be used to create the pattern. See the finished rug at kirimade.com/2020/03/rep-rug/
