One of the most misdiagnosed check engine lights is EVAP codes. Most people feel a new gas cap will fix the light. In some cases, they are correct! if you are going to install a new gas cap, buy one from your dealer and use only the OEM part. However, a lot of people, including mechanics, will install parts without a proper diagnosis. To properly diagnose the car, you'll want to have a proper scanner and a smoke machine.
This suv came to us after another shop replaced the gas cap and the purge solenoid. The engine light came back on, at which point the customer brought us the suv for proper diagnosis and repair.
We first scanned the suv and found code P0442. After reviewing the code and seeing that the gas cap and purge solenoid were replaced, we decided to smoke the evap system. We found the Evap line from the Canister to the Solenoid was heavily rusted and leaking. In the video, we show you how we smoked the system and how the line was routed along with where we found the leak.
